Musicianship

General | Skill Training | Tips & Tricks

General

The musicianship skill is required to successfully play an instrument. It is only useful when combined with another bard skill.

Discordance, Peacemaking and Provocation all depend on the Music skill. When one of these skills is used, musicianship is checked first. If you're successful, the second skill is checked next. If you succeed that 2nd test as well, you successfully entice/peacemake/provoke. Should you fail, however, the second skill is never checked. It is therefore best to achieve at least Grandmaster (100) in musicianship first before you start working any other bard skills.

Skill Training

Whenever you play an instrument there's a chance that your music skill increases. This is movement based, so you should 8x8 on a boat for the best gains. This should take about an hour or two. Really.

Tips & Tricks

  • Bards should always start with at least 1 point in music/provoke/peacemake/entice so that they receive a newbie instrument that you can't lose.

  • You can disable Bard sounds in UOA, which is good when practicing and not so good when playing your bard in a dangerous area.

  • Use Tambourines as they only weigh 1 stone. Lutes weighs 10 so there is a difference.

  • A GM Instrument gives 5 points which increases successes by 10%

    -Arjay (paraphrased)

  • Slayer weapons when used on it's opposition monster type will give you a negative bonus instead of a positive one. As an example, an instrument of Daemon Dismissal (labeled in the fashion of “a lute [Daemon Dismissal]”) will increase the bard’s chance to use a barding ability against any variety of Daemon by 20% (when that instrument is used). When used against an elemental, however, the bard’s chance of success is reduced by 20%.

  • Non-exceptional player-made instruments or one purchased from an NPC will have about 400 uses. An exceptional player-made instrument or a magical instrument will have about 500 uses.

  • Stuck Music gains?

Music is the easiest skill to gain in UO, by far. You probably have hit an unlucky streak. Get on a boat and sail "forward" north (on most shards; some shards it might be south). Play 8-10 different instruments in a random order. With a one second pause between instruments, you will still hit every 8x8 section. If you sail one long stretch with no gains, do not sail back over those same areas. Move over 8 tiles (east or west) and you will have a long, new south-to-north stretch to sail. Once you get a gain, all the old gain 8x8 sections are reset and can be used again.

Of course, double and triple check to make sure you have free skills marked down so that you can gain.
