Lumberjacking

General | Axe Weapons Table | Skill Training | Tips & Tricks

General

Lumberjacking, a passively checked skill, is used to to chop trees for logs or do massive damage to a target (monster or player). The skill is checked everytime you use an axe. You have the axe equipped to receive logs from a tree.

With the release of UO:Renaissance, lumberjacking became a a damage bonus for all 2-handed axe weapons (Hatchet, Axe, Battle Axe, Double Axe, Executioner’s Axe, Large Battle Axe, Two-handed Axe).

The bonus starts at 0% for 0 lumberjacking and goes up to 25% at 99.9 lumberjacking. A GM lumberjacker gets a 30% bonus, so it's worth it to train it all the way to 100.

Note: There are NO powerscrolls at this time for Lumberjacking.

Swordsmanship is required to effectively take advantage of the Lumberjacking bonus since almost all Axes are swordsmanship type weapons. The War Axe, although listed as an Axe, is actually a Macing weapon and requires the Macing skill to use effectively.

The lower your swordsmanship skill, the less likely your chance to hit your (non-tree) target with an axe and conversely, the higher your swordsmanship skill, the more likely you are to hit your target with that axe.

Note: Lumberjacking does NOT affect your chance to hit. It ONLY affects damage done.

Axe Weapons Table

Axe Name Speed Base Damage
Hatchet 40 1d16+1 (2-17)
Axe 37 3d10+3 (6-33)
Battle Axe 30 2d17+4 (6-38)
Double Axe 37 1d31+4 (5-35)
Executioner's Axe 37 3d10+3 (6-33)
Large Battle Axe 30 2d17+4 (6-38)
Two-Handed Axe 30 2d18+3 (5-39)

Nieves thoughts on the axe weapons: All of the axes are good weapons and it really falls down to personal preference. A great number of player versus player combatants will attest to the power of a Double Axe and will tell you time and again that it's the best over all weapon. I would have to agree, but do not overlook the other axe weapons. Both Battles Axes are solid weapons, and the Executioner's Axe is a fast weapon with reliable damage potential. If Nieves had to choose, for an iron GM blacksmithed weapon, he would pick up an Executioner's Axe. For a high end Magic Axe, either a Large Battle Axe or Double Axe, and for any Runic, the Battle Axe, Double Axe and Executioner's Axes would be ones his jacker would carry. For Player Versus Monster Combat, it doesn't matter as long as it's a good weapon (GM/Might or above) or appropriate to the monster type (all slayers, including silver).

Skill Training

There are two ways to raise lumberjacking:

  • Lumberjacking trees: Every time you chop some a tree for logs, there's a chance to gain lumberjacking. After 80-90 this becomes quite slow, and because of the long delay (5-6 seconds) and the requirement to move from tree to tree, this is not the best way to powergame Lumberjacking (although it can be profitable).

  • Sparring: When fighting with one of the weapons that receive the lumberjacking damage bonus, you can also gain lumberjacking every time you hit. Keep in mind that:

    • It does not matter WHAT you are fighting, but you should fight something that's EASY to hit. You don't gain when you miss.
    • Use the fastest weapon available for fastest gain. The hatchet, although slower than all the other axes, also happens to do the least amount of damage, so you don't have to heal your target as much.
    • Keep your dexterity as high as possible, so you swing faster. If you have to wear armor, limit yourself to studded armor.
The best way to train is with a human partner (second account or friend). Set up a warrior with GM parry in full plate, buckler shield and NO weapon. With GM swords you should never miss your training partner, and with 100 dex you can swing VERY fast for even more hits. Healing him shouldn't be a problem either since he's only going to take minium damage from a hatchet in all that armor.

Another way that works almost as well is sparing NPC warriors. Check out the Jhelom dueling pit. There's a big warrior spawn there. Find one that is NOT holding a weapon, carrying only a shield and is wearing armor. Hire him and take him to guard zone, then tell him to attack you. Remember that you will have to heal both the NPC and yourself.

NPC Paladins also spawn in Delucia and Trinsic, these guys have VERY heavy armor. If you know a disarm thief (or if you have one yourself), Hire one of them and disarm his weapon. Now he's the perfect NPC partner to work lumberjacking with.

Remember that Lumberjacking is a (relatively) slow skill to raise. Patience and persistance is important with this skill. You will eventually grandmaster this skill.

Tips & Tricks

  • If you start a new char with even 1 point in lumberjacking, you get a newbie hatchet that does very little damage. Make sure you keep it repaired though, they break after an hour or two.

  • You double click the axe and target the tree (usually the trunk or branches) to get logs. Stand to the east of a tree and using UOAssist, Create a macro that targets the axe, then target the trunk or branches of a tree. Stop the macro. Right click the target line and change it to target relative location. This way you don't have to do any unnecessary clicking. Make sure you stand as close to the tree as possible so you can make sure the macro works as needed.

  • If you're lumberjacking logs, carry a carpentry tool with you. Anyone can turn logs into boards, and boards weigh a LOT less than logs. You can also set a UOAssist macro for this as well.

  • Remember that chopping trees in Felucca will give you double the resources returned. And regardless of where you do your chopping, take a beetle. It's a tough creature, can carry your logs, AND, most importantly, you can ride it. So if someone tries to kill your beetle, you can call it over, mount it, and force that would be 'thief' to take a murder count to take those logs (not that it matters to most hardcore Felucca players; especially after Stat-Loss being removed in Age of Shadows).
