Chivalry

General | Tithing | Karma | Chivalry Spells | Skill Training | Tips & Tricks

General

Chivalry. The skill of the Paladin. The holy warrior and crusader for good has come to Ultima Online. Chivalry allows you to cast spells that take the place of Magery. In fact, it can be argued that Chivalry is better for a warrior than magery itself. You can use Chivalry to heal wounds, cure poison and disease, lift curses, improve your fighting ability, dispel summoned creatures, use a mass resurrection effect and even cast an affect that damages multiple targets. As a bonus, you can cast Chivalry spells while carrying any weapon (spell channeling or not). Casting Chivalry spells requires mana and tithing points. See below for Tithing. Additionally, the power of the spells are affected by Karma. The higher the Karma, the more powerful your spells or the longer they last. See below for Karma.

You need a Book of Chivalry to cast Chivalry spells. You find this book in the land of Malas in the city of Luna. You can buy it from an NPC very close to the Malas Luna Moongate. He will give you a book of Chivalry and about 25-30 Chivalry points.

Note: You cannot use, nor do you have access to Chivalry if you do not have the Age of Shadows version of the Ultima Online client installed. Be warned that Chivalry from a player that does have the client can surely affect your character.

It is important to note that a Paladin character would do well to have some measure of Battle Focus so they can regenerate their mana since they will be using it up quickly. Battle Focus is considered a 'supplementary' skill to Chivalry since it allows a character to regenerate mana through metal armor (although at a lower rate than Meditation).

Some Chivalry thoughts from UOPG Updaters and Readers:

Why have higher then Gm Chivlary? Why would you need higher then Gm chivlary? The highest level spell is noble sacrifice requiring a minumum of 65 skill. At Gm wouldn't that mean you have a 100% chance of casting it? I just don't see any reason for these chivlary power scrolls, since (as I understand it) chivlary is only checked to see if you cast the spell successfuly. It is karma which determines the effectivness of the spell (if it is needed).

I THINK Chivalry skill level calculates into the power of the Dispel Evil spell - meaning higher Chivalry gives you a better chance of dispelling summoned creatures from higher level mages. I seem to remember reading that somewhere, but I can't remember where now. Also I'm not saying that is good enough reason to actually bother taking Chivalry above 100.

Tithing

From the UO.com Age of Shadows Website: Each ability a Paladin wishes to invoke will require a certain amount of "tithing points" to use. A Paladin can earn these tithing points by donating gold at a shrine or holy place. And while he is free to be generous and tithe as much as he likes, there will be a limit as to how many points a Paladin can have at any one time.

The maximum amount of Tithing points you can have is 100,000. The best place to Tithe is at the Ilshenar Shrines as they are easy to get to via moongates (they are right next to the Ilshenar moongates). Simply walk to an Ankh and either left mouse click or shift+left mouse click the Ankh to bring up the Tithing menu. Select Tithe and another gump will come up. You can Tithe as much gold as you can carry.

Special Note: You do not need a Spell Channeling Weapon to cast a Chivalry Spell. You do not need to disarm to cast a Chivarly spell. If you have a weapon in hand and you cast a Chivalry spell, you are not disarmed.

Karma

From the UO.com Age of Shadows Website: Karma is an integral part of a Paladin's way of life, as it affects all of his abilities. As his karma increases, the effectiveness of his abilities will also increase. So, a Paladin who is a Glorious Lord would have a greater advantage over one that was merely Admirable.

It's HIGHLY recommend to achieve Glorious for your character as it WILL make your spells more powerful and longer lasting. Additionally, it's NOT recommend you player kill with a character that has Chivalry as it will take away your Karma when player killing. Now, being a Paladin in Order vs. Chaos, Factions or general Orange versus Orange (guild wars) player versus player combat IS recommended as a Paladin is an offensive powerhouse.

Chivalry Spells

Spell NameMin Skill LevelTithing CostMana CostDescription
Close Wounds, 'Obsu Vulni'010 10This skill can be used to heal anywhere from 7-37 points of damage. Cannot be cast while moving. At Glorious Karma, it heals on average of 35-36.
Cleanse by Fire, 'Expor Flamus'51010This skill can be used to cure poison from the target, but at the cost of dealing fire damage to the caster. It can also be used on other targets, removing the poison from them, then infusing the poison back into oneself. Fire damage dealt is lessened if the user has high Karma. Glorious and higher can expect to only take 2-4 points of fire damage. Can be cast while moving.
Remove Curse, 'Extermo Vomica' 51020This ability is used to remove Curses, which include Necromancer curses, Clumsy, Weaken, Feeblemind, Paralyze, and the Curse spell used by mages. This is a fairly effective spell against counteracting casters. Chance of removing curses is affected by the user's Karma. Can be cast while moving.
Consecrate Weapon, 'Consecrus Arma'151010This ability is used to endow your weapon, for a short period of time, to target the lowest resistance of the target it hits. It's duration is Karma-based, and lasts anywhere between a 3-11 seconds.
Sacred Journey, 'Sanctum Viatas'152020For lesser or worse, this ability allows the Paladin to recall off of any rune towards any facet. It is instantaneous, and slightly quicker than the Recall spell. For that matter, it does not have any 'sound' that accompanies the Magery equivalent.
Divine Fury, 'Divinum Furis'251015 Temporarily Increases a Paladin's swing speed, chance to hit, damage dealt, and totally refreshing your stamina, while lowering your defenses. Duration is based on karma, and can last anywhere between 7-24 seconds. Average is 20 seconds at Glorious Karma.
Dispel Evil, 'Dispiro Malas' 351015This ability attempts to dispel evil summoned creatures and also attempts to cause other evil creatures to flee from active combat. Transformed Necromancers may take also take stamina and mana damage if forced from their transformed states. Caster's Karma and Chivalry, and Target's Fame and Necromancy, also affect Dispel chance.
Enemy of One, 'Forul Solum' 451020The next enemy hit by the Paladin after activating this ability becomes the Paladin's Mortal Enemy. All damage done to that exact creature type is enhanced, but damage from other creature types is increased as a tradeoff. Mortal Enemy creatures will highlight orange to the Paladin. Duration of the spell is affected by the caster's Karma. Average duration from a Glorious-level Paladin: 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
Holy Light, 'Augus Luminos'551015Deals energy damage in a radius around the caster to all valid targets. Amount of damage done is affected by the caster's Karma. Damage done is anywhere between 8-24. The average at Glorious is20-22. Can be cast on the move.
Noble Sacrifice, 'Dium Prostra' 653020 Attempts to Resurrect, Cure, and Heal all targets in a radius around the caster. If successful, the caster is drained of all but 1-2 Hit, Mana, and Stamina Points. The recipients of the resurrection are also healed by an amount dependent on the caster, anywhere between 4-24. Glorious and higher can expect to heal between 20-24. There is no forseeable limit of how many people are resurrected, so long as they are within range.

Skill Training

On average it will cost you about 100,000 - 150,000 gold to reach 100 in Chivalry.

Skill level What to cast
0-30 Buy it
30-40 Consecrate Weapon
40-55 Divine Fury
55-69 Enemy of One/Dispel Evil
69-88 Holy Light
88-120 Noble Sacrifice

Tips & Tricks

  • Using a packhorse to Tithe is recommended as you can carry much more gold on a pack horse than on your character. A packhorse can carry about 80,000 gold.
  • The best ways to raise Karma is by killing Liches, then Lich Lords, Elder Gazors, or Demons. Those are relatively easy monsters to take down (with proper equipment, character skills and 'skill').
  • Aryn's Primer on Chivalry is a GREAT resource for anyone wishing to know more about Chivalry.
  • Consecrate Weapon + Double Strike + Enemy Of One = Ownage.
  • Chivalry skill of 80 and Glorious Karma is more than enough to take advantage of the more widely used Chivalry Spells (Holy Light and Noble Sacrifice are difficult to cast at a skill level of 80). Some players will even argue that 60 Chivalry is enough on a warrior character.
  • Only three levels of chivalry would ever be needed, well maybe 3 1/2 levels.

    pvp chivalry:
40-50 (depending on how reliant you are on it, and can or cannot fizzle)

    pvm chivalry:
70-80 (lets you Enemy Of One nearly always)

    rp/guild chivalry:
(the valiant paladin, high chivalry for ressurecting friends, or performing rp-events) gm chivalry for ressurecting friends. gm + for the event coordinator that cannot fail noble sacrifice.
