Siege Essay - Written By Soruss- 09/05/2001Siege Perilous Guide

Introduction

This guide is being made to help people who have become bored with their regular shards by giving them a head start when moving to Siege Perilous. In this SP guide you will find all the differences between Siege and a regular shard and tips for starting a new character on Siege Perilous. I hope you will find this guide informative and worthy to your cause.

What is Siege Perilous?

Siege Perilous is Ultima Online's Veteran shard. It was brought up on July 30, 1999. Originally the shard started on July 16, 1999, but due to problems it was wiped two weeks later. Siege Perilous was made for people who wanted more of a challenge from their Ultima Online experience. Several changes were put in place on Siege Perilous to make it more of a difficult shard, including changes to skill gain. The system of skill gain on Siege Perilous was called Rate over Time, and was one of the main reasons the shard was somewhat unpopular.

What is Rate over Time? (ROT)

Rate over Time allows players to gain skill without the tedium of constantly using skills that has become associated with UO. Rate over Time made it so players could only gain so much skill over a period of time (For example: .1 every 10 minutes). This time was measured in real world hours, so it was possible to log you character in, use the skill and gain, log your character out and come back ten minutes later and do the same thing. Even though RoT took less in game time to build a character, it took a very long time in real world hours. This caused SP to be unpopular because very few people were willing to leave their home-shard with established characters, only to play a newbie for a month. For this reason, RoT was taken out of Siege Perilous. However, recent changes In Testing are going to bring back a hybrid of Rate over Time. Details can be found here.

How is Siege different from other Shards?

These are some of the major differences you should be aware of.

YOUR CHARACTER

- You only get one character per account. This means no mules unless you are willing to cough up the dough.
- Murderers and criminals cannot kick or ban people from their house.
- There is no Stat Loss in Siege.
- There is no Trammel or Ilshenar on Siege

NPCs

- NPC Shopkeepers do not buy anything from players.
- NPC Shopkeepers sell their wares at 3x the normal price (plus any factions taxing). This also includes training from, stabling and hiring NPCS (including player vendors).
- Killing innocent NPCs can result in a murder count!
- There is new Red Wandering healers called Priests of Mondain. They will res Red and blue players, but not criminals.

SPELLs

- There is NO RECALL SPELL! This also means you cannot access your boat if you leave it in the middle of the ocean.
- You cannot mark runes or cast gate in dungeons.

SKILLs

- Provocation is difficulty based.

ITEMs

- Many items (such as newbie daggers) will become ruined with use (doing things, such as cutting hides from corpses).

OTHER: Changes in Testing, including:

- RoT skill gain
- NPCs will no longer be able to train characters
- Hiding will no longer be possible while taming
- Siege Perilous will gain the Ilshenar facet
- changes to starting equipment
- 1/3 gold for reds
- Capped stat gain
- a new Hero/Evil System
- Details, which are subject to change, can be found here.

Creating a Character on Siege Perilous

Creating a character on Siege Perilous is exactly the same as on every other shard. The two biggest differences are that there is no Trammel to safely work up your skills and you only have one character slot to work with. It is highly recommended that you start on Siege Perilous with a group of friends or your whole guild. Some of the larger guilds on Siege Perilous will help newer guilds come onto the shard. You can probably contact one of these guilds by going to the forums at Siegeperilouswar or Battlevortex. For those who want to go it alone, I have created a very simple guide to help them get started.

Get Those Skills!

It is not too important what skills you start with, but I'd recommend starting with 50 healing, 49 anatomy and 1 wrestling. It makes getting your fighting skills faster and the newbie leather gloves kick ass.

Get That Name!

Make an original non-kewl dood name. People will kill you just for having names like "31337 rOxxOr", "HehLaffLol", or "Drizzt." It is not hard to come up with original names. Just pick a cool animal name and change some of the letters around or add more. Like "Golion", "Tigera", or "Armadillion."

Get Those Stats!

It is well known that the see-saw method is the best way to get the perfect stats in UO. The only downfall is that this method requires 700 skill points. So the first thing you want to do is work on a bunch of skills to try and reach the 700pt cap, and then see-saw your stats to 100str 100dex and 25 int. (Please note: with the pending changes to Siege Perilous, you will only be able to gain 6 stats pts a day)

Get Those Bandies!

Now if we are going to work up fighting skills (I highly recommend starting with a fighter) we need bandages. Go to Yew, and then go south from Empathy Abbey. You will come to a small fenced in area with lots of sheep (there is actually two of these places in Yew. If your having trouble finding them, look at the screenshots below). What you want to do is shear the sheep and then kill them. If you just kill them and then cut the wool off afterwards, you get three piles of wool. However these three piles give as much cloth as the one pile you got from shearing the sheep. So the less wool to spin on the spinning wheel, the better. Then kill the sheep afterwards to keep the spawn going. Do this until you have about ten or more piles of wool. Now just go to a tailor shop and spin that wool into yarn, put that yarn into the loom and then use scissors to cut the cloth into bandages. Now we have 300 or more bandages!

Get Those Fighting Skills!

Now it is time to go to Jhelom. You can get skill here in one of three ways. 1) Hire your own fighter to train with. 2) Ask someone if you can train on their fighter (they just need to friend you to it, so you can get it to attack you). 3) Attack one of the fighters in the pit (Not recommended. People will attack and kill you. I have done it before, but only because the guy's name was "ROFLMAOHAHAHAHA". Don't give yourself a stupid name). After you have decided which method you are going to use, get yourself the appropriate weapon for your skill. Start training with the wrestling fighters and finish with the ring/broadsword fighters. After you GM your chosen fighting skill and tactics, you can go to the swamps and work up anatomy using the lizard man trick (If you don't like this, just GM anatomy while GMing healing)

Get That Spell Book!

Instead of paying 6-7k for a full spell book, why not just make your own? Buy an empty spell book from a mage shop and then go to the maze, which is west of the Britain moon gate. Then go to the small mage tower inside the maze. For those who cannot find it, I have created a screenshot that shows the way. Now, all you need to do is kill the mages until your spell book is full up to 7th circle. The mages give some regs and a little gold. You should probably have about 1-2k and 30+/- of each reg by the time you are finished. You will also never ever find a PK here!

Get Those Regs!

The best places to buy regs is going to be the faction reg vendors. This means that a good reg spot today, may not be a good reg spot tommorow. Just ask people at some of the more populated banks (Moonglow, Delucia, Brit) where the best place to buy regs is.

Get That Magery!

Magery on Siege is more important than on other shards, because you need gate to get around and that requires at least 60 magery if you use scrolls. It is probably better just to GM it, or get it to 99.9. Everyone know how to 8x8 magery to GM, but I can tell you where and how to get the money for your magery. Just go to the Brigand Camp south of yew and kill brigands. They are very weak, they die in 3-4 spear hits and about 2 axe hits. They also give 100 gold each and sometimes 300 gold. The only problem is that sometimes PKs will come by, so buy a horse and run at the first sign of a red name. You should be able to get about 5k in less than 40 minutes.

Get That Healing!

After you finish magery, if you can find someone to sit on the boat for you, you can GM healing as well using the 8x8 method (of course!)

Get That. Other Stuff!

By now you should have a fairly well established severalxGM character. Now it is time to go bust heads in the world of Siege PvP! Looking for a fight? Try these places!

Brit Grave Yard
Expect to find a lot more blues than reds. It is a fairly large PvP hot spot.
City of the Dead
North of Delucia. I'd say CotD has the most PvP. You will often find large groups of reds and blues duking it out. So choose a side and get to the fun!

Other Places of Interest

Yew Hunting Grounds
Yew has a good variety of monsters to get some money from. You can find liches, orcs and brigands all in very close proximity. The downside is that there is often Shadow Clan Orcs and other PKs hovering about. The server line is also a useful tool for avoiding PKs.

Trinsic Island
East of Trinsic. You will never see any PKs here. There is usually a lot of ginseng on the ground. There is a rather frequent bandit camp spawn and there is always lots of great harts (for taming and hides). The ocean east of Trinsic is also a great place for 8x8ing.
