Fishing has two uses, one is obviously catching
fish, but the more important one is the recovery of lost items from the sea.

Message in a Bottle |
The special fishing net can be used by anyone to
spawn a number of sea creatures. Water elementals, sea serpents, deep sea
serpents and krakens can appear, usually 1-4 total per net. The monsters can
have treasure maps and Messages in a Bottle. Krakens also sometimes have ropes
on them.
The special fish work like really weak potions:
They add either +5 to intelligence, dexterity or strength. One kind also
restores 10% stamina. The stat mods last only a few seconds.
Big Fish can be turned into a trophy with a
taxidermy kit.
The treasure maps fishers find are all level 1.
The message in a bottle have the location of a
sunken ship written on them. When a fisher fishes at that location, he can
recover either a level 1, 2 or 3 treasure chest, as well as some shipwreck
items like paintings, bones, shells and body parts.
To recover MiB's or other items, you've to be in
deep water. Deep water means 14 tiles away from land, or the dark-blue water on
UO's radar map.
When you find a treasure map or a MiB a sea
serpent spawns. The item will be on the corpse of the sea serpent, so make sure
your fisher is able to kill them. After 80.0 fishing sea serpents can also
appear without a map or SOS bottle, so be careful when you fish.
Skill training Fishing is location based,
so it's important to keep moving while you fish, so the best place to fish is a
moving boat. When your skill increases you can use 8x8 to gain more points.
If you get good 8x8 runs you can GM fishing in a
few powerhours.
A UOA macro works best to fish:
Use item (fishing pole)
Target relative location (next to your boat)
Pause 8000
Tips & Tricks
- Make sure your macro doesn't fish under your
boat. Sea serpents can't spawn there, so you cant get maps/SOS.
- You can give your SOS bottles to others to
fish up, however they must have at least 65.0 fishing.
- UO Auto Map is invaluable to sail on the sea
and to locate sunken treasures. Use the "Go to location" function to locate a
SOS location. You can get UOAM from http://uo.stratics.com/uoam/
