[Epyon] June 21 - 12:20 PM EDT | Set in the year 2015, Neon Genesis Evangelion or EVA for short is a fine-tuned combination of mecha, character growth, and humor all rolled into 25 minute injections of enjoyment.
I have purchased the first DVD's so far, 25 dollars a shot..seems expensive but on my quest for a large anime DVD library its just another purchase. There are 8 DVD's in the whole deal bringing me up to 200 dollars for the series. Not bad really.
In the first episode we are introduced to several main characters, the first one you see is Misato. She is en route to pick up the main character of the series, Shinji Ikari. Misato works for NERV, which is the defense organization againest the Angels, a group of bio-mechincal..things for lack of a better word. Shinji's father, Gendo Ikari is the chief of NERV and he sends for his son to come and work for him. Gendo and Shinji don't exactly get along, as is clearly illustrated when Shinji and Gendo get into a heated discussion while the first Angel attacks.
Shinji: Why did you send for me?
Gendo: You know why.
Shinji: I thought you didn't want me, why do you want me know?
Gendo: I have a use for you.
Nice eh?
The Evangelion project has produced Earth's own suits as a defense againest the Angels. Shinji is given Unit 01. The test type version of EVA. The Eva and Shinji connect almost automatically much better than anyone else ever did, but he still is getting tossed around by the Angel, the EVA's arm gets broke and thrown againest a building where the head shoots out all sorts of red fluid. Then the EVA goes Berserk and starts acting on its own, it runs over to the Angel, breaks both of the arms in two and pulls a horn off its head. It then procedes to use the horn to stab the Angel in the eye, over and over and over until it jumps on the EVA and self-destructs. But the EVA survives, and sends Shinji into the hospital.
Some other key characters are the other two EVA pilots, Rei Aynami, the blue haired silent type whom Shinji has become interested in. And the incredibly boistrous Asuka Langley Sohruy. The red hair high strung teenager.
The Comic relief comes in usually when Shinji and Misato are at home. It seems something always seems to go wrong between the quiet Shinji and the loud Misato. There are references to Shinji's ....manhood being similar to a toothpick, and Misato tells Shinji to "Feel free to take advantage of everything here, except me that is" she finishes with a wink.
The only thing that doesn't go well for me is the Mech designs. They are cool no doubt, but I think im just to use to the Universal Century suits of the orginal Gundam (not gundam wing)
