^ top-Oh Yeah, I am Really Stupid Over Here... [Nieves] November 30 - 4:53 PM EST | From: "Michael H. Patino" <[deleted]@mindspring.com>

Pay attention to the ilalicised text. Sure, let's open that file don't we?
Pendejos.
There is a lesson here. Don't accept those types of files and only take files from people you know. Oh, and don't forget your virus scanner.

^ top-I Have This Weakness [Nieves] November 30 - 10:35 AM EST | and desire to say "Fuck" everytime something pisses me off. It's something some folks have tried to get me to work out and lighten up on.
But it's hard. Really. I mean, the sound of the word expresses my deepest emotions when it comes to something that just gets my ire. Something I am sure other people truly enjoy seeing as they want me to just give up and leave my heart behind for something else.
I love Ultima Online. It's a great game. Well, ok. It has the potential to be THE great game.
I mean, look at what it offers:
A skill based system. An "open character system". Not something where you are stuck with a character once it's created. I mean, just ask anyone and they will tell you that being stuck with a character when you realize you don't like that particular "class" sucks green, funky crusted, monkey balls.
An 'open' PvP system WITH options (guild wars, PKing, Order/Chaos, Factions, "friendly dueling", a soon to be Dueling System). Yes, in some cases, the penalties are great when you resort to certain types of PvP in UO (gank fests, looting, stat loss), but what other game offers that many options for PvP? None.
Housing that pretty much works (when you can get into the market).
Real Mounts. Not some taxi shit.
Different types of crafting options (tailoring, smithing, etc.) and the ability to make a dedicated Mule Character.
A merchant system that allows PLACED player vendors. Not some consignment thing that gets nerfed. The choice for prices is in the player's hands. Not the system. That's a good thing.
Viable characters in a reasonable amount of time (even if it's kind of broken with Power Hour; and I reiterate, GGS is too late). Not this leveling shit where you have to depend on "groups". You can go at it alone or go at it with "friends".
A "Hard Shard" for the hard core.
Different Character Options that you can pick and choose from and even mix.
Fishing.
Treasure Hunting.
What's new?
New scenarios that come in periodically. WITHOUT having to buy expansions like other games (for now anyway; wait till next year). New items. I know, it's all Pixel Crack, but it's NEW, not old shit. And some of it is actually useful (runebooks, runic hammers, arcane clothing, etc.)
New dungeons WITHOUT new CDs (yes, Ilshenar is for 3D, but it was an attempt to say the least) i.e.-Khaldun, Ilshenar, new areas in Ilshenar, the Orc Dungeon, etc.
New monsters-Golems, Arcane Mages (which are rip offs of the NPC Red Magi), the different Gargoyles, the new Clockwork monsters.
The ability to "enchant" weapons (runic hammers). Which is something I have been screaming about for over a year.
But why was I so pissed yesterday? That forced me to say the "F" word over 21 times?
Because all these new things are being done WITHOUT the old things being fixed. And they are taking things out that really aren't broken (i.e.-Boom Boxes). That's my beef.
I would gladly give up a year of new scenarios, new items and crafting options, additionall pvp options, new monsters, different AI, ALL OF IT, JUST so UO is stable. That there is a viable and stable 3D client that is beautiful to behold (A la Diablo II, the Bioware D&D engine, or the new Warcraft engine).
I am pleading with OSI, get some priorities over there. Get Adrick some help, don't force us to buy new expansions to get new art, do SOMETHING that falls inline with what's needed. I agree with the assessment that the LBR expansion is a waste and I hate that you are forcing us to buy individual copies just so we can enjoy things that you used to just publish for us in the past. And this abandonment of the 3D client baffles me. Why has it been left alone for so long? Fix it for freaking sake!
I am taking Corporate Finance right now (I know you don't give a shit about that but just listen, ok?). I understand why OSI would force us to buy individual copies of a new expansion. It helps the bottom line and adds capital to the company for future needs (raises, better equipment, etc.).
But DO something with that cash! Fix the important things. You know what they are. We shouldn't have to scream for them anymore.
If you fix it, they will come. And if you fix it, no more "F" word from Nieves. Well, about that anyway :p
Don't force me to leave UO behind. The frustration is mounting. And I don't need anymore frustration in my life. I pay for something and I expect a level of quality. Computer Science isn't an exact science (I know, I got a freaking modem on a computer that says it's working, but it won't connect), but poor quality isn't proper business. And if you sold 1/2 rotten apples at the fruit market, eventually, noone would buy your apples.
Hell, I am willing to move to Austin and work for you to help you get some of those priorities in order or even help apply the goals of those priorities.
And I promise, I won't use the "F" word while I am at work :).
See what happens when I get a night's rest and can cool off a bit?

^ top-I Be Confused [Nieves] November 30 - 7:49 AM EST | Hrm...I no see no Above.net in there, do you? And the hops are less. And my ping is back up to Pre-Above.Net Levels. So why am I having so many problems?

^ top-NO JUUS NO DU DAT CHIT TU ME!? [Nieves] November 29 - 11:04 PM EST | What the fuck is the freaking motherfucking ass green monkey balls point to playing a fucking game where you lock up every 3 fucking steps?
What the fuck is the point in adding in patches that are going to fuck the game up for everyone and their freaking Great Grandmother? I mean, THERE IS SUCH A THING AS QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN AUSTIN RIGHT!???? RIGHT????
What the fuck is the point in PvPing in a game where you cast a spell as simple as in mani or in nox and it fucking goes off 10 seconds after you cast it?
What the fuck is the point in fixing shit that isn't really the most important fucking thing to fix?
Factions is fucked.
Party health bars are fucked.
Connectivity is fucked.
UO3D is fucked for 90% of the player base.
Ok ok, a lot of good things have happened in that past year, but jeesuz fucking crust monkeys! They are ignoring the most important things that are important to UO! Connectivity, playability, a stable (new) client, features that work as they are supposed too!!!!
I mean really! ARE THEY EVER GOING TO CREATE A NEW AND NICE CLIENT THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE! Shit, I know. Go hire Blizzard. Tell them to make you a client. Then, in 10 years, when it's working REALLY REALLY good, you can play UO on the most kick ass game ever created.
A quote from a letter I sent in to OSI: There is no sense in playing a game where you start experiencing horrendous bugs after every patch. Had you all been a true software development company, you would've gone the way of other less than spectacular products (such as OS2).
The connectivity to the shards with Publish 14 has been less than adequate at best. I can catch a fly better than I can move around in game now. It was bad enough you chose that piece of **** company in Above.net.
The main issues with the game have been ignored long enough.
Will they heed me? Hell fucking no. I am the foul mouthed, dumbass bastard child from UOPowergamers. Who the fuck listens to me? Who would want to? Why even go to the UOFaire? Those people won't listen!!!
"Oooh...let's add pretty clothing! OOH! Let's add some Golems that tinkers can make and use! Oh but wait, Boom Boxes are too powerful, let's take them out! Oh, well, hmmm, let's add some more pixel crack to appease these folks and keep them from thinking about fucked up connectivity, a piss poor ISP in Above.net, and fucked up patches, and a freaky client and it's crashes and a client only 10% of our playerbase can use!"
I mean, it's not like I care about this fucking game. It's not like I shell out money to play and support this fucking game and it's community right? RIGHT!??? I MEAN! I AM GETTING WHAT I AM PAYING FOR RIGHT!??????
Bah, who gives a shit anyway? I am wasting my fucking bandwidth and time and money.
Fuck it. I am going to go now and put my phone back together.
Tell Nievesy Pooh how much you fucking love this game.

^ top-Yoink!: Wobbly Head Bob on Adricks Team Comments [KH] November 29 - 5:42 PM EST | Stolen from Wobbly Head Bob, defacto puppet leader of the Bobs, because it says exactly what a lot of people are thinking.
Adrick recently posted on the Team Comments some things about factions. You can go here to read them: HERE.
Before I actually get to the 5 points in his comments, I would like to make some points myself.
1) Lower the patch fixing times. I think there should be a patch maybe once a week until factions are not only balanced but almost bug free. Or, if that is too difficult, once every two weeks. This will allow more people to enjoy the system, and cause less people to quit it. Read what Adrick wrote and you can see that nothing has been done for factions since March. Thats 8 months of nothing for factions. No faction messaging and bugged horse stamina. I even remember posting about the stamina bug way back when, here is a link: HERE. So its been over 8 months since the stamina bug hit. I think a patch once every 8 months is a little too slow and has directly determined the fate of factions.
2) I think making clear and understandable statements by the workers of OSI on the message boards and in press type releases, such as the Team Comments, would greatly help not only the relationship between OSI and its customers but greatly facilitate the exchange of ideas between the two. I quit posting on the Faction board at uo.com due to a certain OSI employees ill thought out, misconceived, and badly typed post that locked a thread demanding to know what was going on with the faction patch.
3) Expand the communication to the players about ALL the changes that are going into a patch or the dynamics of an update. Such as when the stamina thing hit, was that a bug or change? Who knows? I complained, others complained, but it was quite sometime before anyone at OSI even acknowledged that this was a bug. OR take my favorite example, someone posted on the faction uo.com board asking if the statloss counter continued whether you were online or not. Adrick came back saying something like, "The timer works whether you are playing or not. Its been like that since day one." Well, well, well. Had anyone KNOWN that was the way it was SUPPOSED to work since DAY ONE, we could've told him that it was broken. And to this day, the timer still does not work if you are offline.
4) Add more people working on faction fixes beyond simply Adrick. I have a feeling that Calandryll is not the only one working on ongoing scenerios. So why is Adrick the only one working on a system that is full of imbalances and bugs?
5) Allow players to know what is going on with faction changes. About 8 months ago, Adrick said he had all the faction fixes that are now in publish 14, all ready to go. That they would be in publish 12, then they would be in publish 13, and then he said he was 'late' getting the fixes in to publish 13 so they went ahead with that publish without the faction fixes... Somewhere in there is a lie, or half truth. Then there's these odd posts from OSI employees asking us what is bugged, unbalanced, or our ideas for factions every few months. Like the first list got lost or something. And the second one was accidently shredded. The third one was thrown out because they thought it was the first one they lost and they didn't want 'old' ideas. And now there is this Team Commen: When was the last Team Comment that involved factions? I've got no idea. But there sure have been plenty of updates and comments on the 'ongoing scenerios'. Maybe Calandryll is just a more competent and harder worker than Adrick...
Anyway, on to HIS points.
1) Lowering the corruption times down to about 8 hours or so to allow more fast-paced conflict and create less of a chance that off-hour, low peak hours will determine the fate of a faction.
Sigh. Is he on some kind of medication? As you know, I am having a hard time with illogical things. Here is one. A corruption time of 8 hours would make off-hour, low peak hours COMPLETELY determine the fate of a faction. This past sunday I stole the sigils at 12am. We did not get raided until around 11am. Thats 11 hours for you time challenged people. We got completely and totally overwhelmed at least 2 times from 11am to 9pm with minor raids inbetween. Yet with an 8 hour corruption time, we would've had corrupted all the sigils without a shot fired. This change would also make it a daunting task to hold the towns for any length of time. A faction would have to reset the sigils every 8 hours or capture them every 3 days to get a break from reseting them. I think a better corruption time would be between 14 and 18 hours. Especially since the first hour after server up is a freebie now. Or as one player said, make the time scale with how many towns you own and how many sigils you are trying to corrupt. So a faction with no towns trying to corrupt one sigil, might only have to guard 8 hours. But a faction that holds all the towns, trying to corrupt all the sigils, would need to hold them for 24 hours or so.
Or make the sigils corrupt based on the order they are placed on the monoliths. So the first one takes 8 hours to corrupt, the second 10, the third 12, etc...
OR make each towns sigil corruption time based on the importance/value of that town. Yew might take 8 hours to corrupt and Britian might take 24 with the others scaled in between.
Of course, an 8 hour corruption time might add more fun to factions as the towns would change hands more often and guarding wouldn't be such the herculean task it is now. I just don't like the reasoning in this point.
2) Allowing guilds to form new factions, possibly as part of an alliance system.
Truly, someone must be under some sort of influence to have this idea and/or express it this way. How can anyone even consider letting a guild become its own faction or to make an alliance system for factions? True, this would bring some guilds into factions because they didn't want to join factions and lose their 'guild identity'. But the only outcome I can see in this is that the faction system turns into a guild war system.
An alliance system for factions defeats the purpose of factions in my eyes. If you want an alliance system go with order/chaos. Actually, I don't understand this point at all. Further explanation of what this point entails needs to be conveyed before I can even begin to think about this anymore.
3) Expanding the control factions have over Felucca by looking into dynamic spawns of monsters and resources.
I guess the haze is still on him from the previous two points. I think factions has a pretty good amount of control over felucca now. Unless the idea is to make factions all encompassing in Fel. Then sure, add more control. But I think adding even more control would just upset those in Fel who dont play factions. The flawed town tax, as it is now, has driven quite a few away all ready. The tax system is idiotic. You raise the tax and you make more silver. You lower the tax you and don't make any silver. Does not matter how many players buy or sell things in that town, the income remains the same. Therefore there is no direct faction reward to not have the tax jacked up as high as possible.
I can just imagine the nightmare for non factioners in any system that would expand the control of factions over Fel.
4) Adding more political elements to the leadership of a faction beyond simply voting. This would include putting in some checks and balances to ensure that the commander and those who he appoints are doing a good job in the eyes of a majority of the faction. Also, as part of this, allowing players to vote to remove other players considered a spy by a majority of the faction.
Maybe he is coming off whatever it is he is on but still groggy. First off, trying to get a majority of a faction to just VOTE for leadership is nigh impossible. The only way to handle this would be to kick everyone out of the faction that did not vote by the end of a voting or polling period. This would help take care of the permanent resident of Trammel faction member also.
But what a 'majority of the faction' means right now, is the largest guild in that faction. Last election for Commanding Lord in the Ches. SL's, really just boiled down to IC! having the most members and voting one of their own in. Of course, if the active numbers in factions went back to what they were in the heyday of factions, this might be a moot point.
I truly fear putting the power of kicking players out of a faction into the hands of the players. There would have to be some serious checks implemented here.
5) Allowing factions to have control over both the town and surrounding area (follow up to item #3). An idea here is that all resource gathering could be taxed by the controlling faction.
Man, I reiterate what I said to item #3. Having an all ready faulty tax system cover even more, will just drive more players from Fel. Why would a lumber jack chop trees in Britian if he knows a third of the wood he chops is going to a faction he plays no part in? And that the income for that town would not rise or fall whether he chopped trees day and night or not at all.
Maybe faction town taxes should only affect faction players. And/or the taxes should work in a more realistic yet simple way. Lets imagine if Texas put a 30% tax on everything sold in its state and Florida put a 30%-off tax. Texas would turn into a ghost state over night and get no income from its exorbitant tax. I mean, 390 bucks for an Xbox? When the people in Florida are paying 210 bucks? Who wouldn't move?
I realize this is a general simplification of real world sales taxes but I would prefer something better than what is currently in UO before it encompasses even more areas. |
^ top-So you want to kill valorite elementals, eh? [Eric] November 29 - 8:18 AM EST | This was posted by Blood Moon in our forums:
There are only two elms really worth spawning and killing.
Shadow and Valorite. Shadow can be killed by one mage so who gives a shit about them? The latter is a HUGE pain in the ass.
However since you are reading this I suppose you DO want to kill one so here goes.
Things to bring. A pair of friends. One mage, One archer, if you can't find an archer a normal parry warrior in heavy armor works just as well.Another warrior wouldn't hurt but its hard to find friends to do it for free. Total refreshs.(lots of them) A packhorse(they are rarely targeted so don't worry.) Garg pickaxes three or four of them. Two ore books. Full of verite and valorite spots. Normally I mine verite spots, they are not as heavily mined as valorite is.
Tactics for killing one. Your job is to spawn it, golems/mares/dragons are USELESS. If you have magery heal the warrior and mage as they fight it. For that matter magery is pretty much useless as well. You would do well to wear AR yourself, I was in full plate, the second they spawn they start smacking on you. ;P
An invis item helps...so does hiding and casting invis.
Once it spawns all hell breaks loose. The idea is simple if using the above parry warrior like my little group had to. Mage heals warrior. If you have magery yourself...you'd do well to help heal the warrior fighting it, they hit very hard. So hard in fact the warrior who was fighting it lost most of her fort plate set. They eat armor like a 1/4pounder with cheese. Oh yes the gas attack.....thats what the total refresh's are for. It randomly changes targets if you stand too close when it gas attacks. So I advise the mage to stay about five steps back.
Two warriors can cross heal while the mage heals what they can't as well.
And whatever you do don't try to solo one.
I'm sure I missed something point it out and I'll fix it.
Thanks for the info. Blood Moon. If you want to add to this information, check the thread out.

^ top-For the record... [Epyon] November 28 - 5:05 PM EST | "Kamikaze's" post was nothing more than a cut and paste job that Paladin wrote up based on his own and others input from the old forum a long time ago.
I believe in giving credit where credit is due.
Still a good article.
Thanks Paladin. |
^ top-Paladin Reborn? [Nieves] November 28 - 4:57 PM EST | Hello all:
Below are an amalgamtion of studies and statistics that I've complided fver the years on UO. Most are FAQ, some are empirical studies or formulas. Perhaps you'll find them usefull. Enjoy.
Poisoning Strength Equation
Your combined total of poisoning and magery, not just your poisoning level, determine the strength of poison you cast.
0 - 130.1 Lesser 130.2 - 170.1 Normal 170.2+ for Greater 200 for 5% chance for Deadly
All results are dependant on targeting your opponent while standing within a two tile radius.
Chance to hit
Your % chance to hit someone when both attacker and defender have GM weapons skill is, 1 50.000% 2 75.000% 3 87.500% 4 93.750% 5 96.875% 6 98.438% 7 99.219% 8 99.609% 9 99.805% 10 99.902% Where the first number is swing #.
The chance to hit if both combatants have GM weapon skill is 50%, every time. The chart shown above displays the chances that you have hit your opponent by the indicated attack number, but each time you attack you have a 50% chance to hit.
If you attack 10 times, there is a 99.902% chance that you will hit your opponent at least once, but you do not have a 99.902% chance of hitting your opponent with your tenth strike.
Parry Study
[Parry Skill] - ([Shield AR] * 1.33) = [%chance to parry] Therefore a GM parrier with a buckler would have the following probability of blocking the first successful attack. [100]-([10] * 1.33) = 86.7% for each successful block 10 points of dmg would be absorbed...
So therefore a warrior with GM weapon skill attacking a Mage with GM wrestling would have a 50% chance of hitting him on the first attack. His probability of doing normal damage (ie without parry absorbing any) is .50(50%) * .17(17%) [17% is his chance parry not absorbing dmg] his probability of doing his regular dmg on the first attack is 8.5%. (parry absorption and chance to hit probability inclusive) Remember though, a buckler only absorbs 10 dmg per successful parry attempt. A warrior with GM tactics will be doing much more than that!
Consider that a 100str GM tactics warrior wielding a katana does an average 33 dmg per successful strike against an unarmored opponent. So considering parry dmg absorption this average would fall to {(33-10)*(0.867) + (33)(0.133) = approx 24 dmg a substantial decrease but in no way totally dominate. I prefer higher AC shields ie a metal Kite shield. At GM parry
buckler 7AR 86% chance to parry wooden 8AR 84% chance to parry metal 11AR 78% chance to parry wooden kite 12AR 76% chance to parry metal kite 16AR 68% chance to parry heater 23AR 54% chance to parry order 30AR 40% chance to parry chaos 32AR 36% chance to parry
Metal Kite shields have 101-115 durability block 68% of the time and will still absorb a significant amount of damage. Therefore I suggest to use a metal kite shield for maximum versatility and effectiveness.
Mindblast Damage Test
OSI has said MB dmg is based on BASE stats. As such, potions, spells, armor and anything else that effects temporary stat levels should logically NOT effect dmg. I decided - after hearing many player tell me that potions do have an impact on MB dmg - to test the theory, where else, but test center.
The character I used skills and stats were: GM Magery GM Alchemy GM Eval GM Healing GM Anat GM Med GM Wrestling
Stats: Str 100 Int 100 Dex 25
I casted MB a total of 100 times. 50 of these were before drinking a GA potion the other 50 were After drinking a GA potion.
These are the results: Without potion: Average DMG = 26.54, Max dmg = 37, Min Dmg = 12, Median Dmg = 24.5
With potion: Average DMG = 20.08, Max Dmg 33, Min Dmg = 12, Median Dmg = 22.5
This constitues a 15% drop in Average Dmg, quite startling results! It seems potions do effect MB Dmg for stats that aren't maxed. Whether or not the trend continues when a potion boosts the drinker above 100 in a stat is as yet unknown.
Protection
Is dependant upon four autonomous variables, these are Magery, meditation, eval, and inscription. With GM wrestling alone you will be hit 50% of the time. With GM wrestling, med, eval, and magery you will be hit 50% of the time and disrupted 25% of the time. With GM wrestling, med, eval, magery, and inscription you will be hit 50% of the time and disrupted 12.5% of the time.
Reactive Armor
Is dependant upon four autonomous variables, these are Magery, meditation, eval, and inscription. With GM Med, magery, and Eval reactive armor will absorb 50 points worth of damage. With GM Med, magery, Eval, and inscription it will absorb 75 points of damage.
Note: to nullify RA simply equip a piece of non leather armor (studded is fine). You will have to wait approximately 2 mins to recast it.
Combating Mindblast, and Theoretical DGM Equation
The key combating MB is balancing your stats. I suggest taking 90 str 90 dex 45 int for a warrior template and 90 str 100 int 35 dex on a mage. This is because the damage direct dmg spells deal and your meditation rate are both dependant on your intelligence. As such I never take less than 100.
The reason you need balanced stats is because the MB damage equation looks like this.
(Avg mindblast dmg is something like {[Highest Stat - Lowest Stat]\2} with a max of 60% max HP or 40 damage - whatever is higher)
MB only looks at differential between your BASE STATS i.e stats before armor modifiers are applied. Potions and spells DO affect the differentials as they modify BASE STATS. Bless is a good spell to use because it increases each of your stats by he same amount so your original differential is maintained. Your Stats are boosted and the MB dmg you take IS NOT!
Recommended Equipment
you must be prepared to battle at any moment, anytime. This means having the necessary equipment available and organized! It is important that all needed material is located in ONE PACK. This should be the only pack open on screen.(This is so you don't get confused) Everyonefs pack is a little different. What I'm going to list is the very base necessities: (*) Extras that i carry 5-10 Greater heals 6-12 Greater Cures 5-10 Total refreshes *5 Greater agility’s *5 Greater strengths *5 Greater explosions (each type of potion is stacked one on top of each other - saves space) - if you have UOA make macros for drinking potions. I believe this Is UOA's BEST FEATURE. 25 bandages & cloth + scissors (for you healers out there) 5-12 magically trapped boxes (these should be in a straight row on the bottom of the pack) Again if you have UOA make a box opening macro. A must against Paralyze. 1 fully charged runebook with 2 Recall runes inside (One to town, One to a safe spot. You never know when you'll go gray.) 10-20 fish steaks (food is good, less chance to fail spells, better gains, you regain hp faster, less stamina loss, and a quick stamina boost!)
For a simple way to protect against thieves first place a newbie cloak in the bottom right corner. Place the pouch containing all your equipment on top of the cloak, open the pouch. Place another cloak over top of the pouch. Now a thief cannot access youfre pack without first alerting you. Make sure all you weapons, armor, and other items have UOA disarm bags set inside the pouch. This will not protect against disarm thieves.
Suggested Armor Combo
Plate chest Leather Studded Arms Leather STudded Gloves Leather Studded Gorget Ringmail legs Closed Helm
-9 Dex loss 33 AR
This is because not all armor pieces are created equal, i.e. certain armor pieces impart better over all stocatic protection. These are the Post UOR values. 36% Chest 22% Legs 14% Arms/head 7% hands/neck
Plate chest (40 AC)*.36 = 14.4 Leather Studded Arms (16 AC)*.14 = 2.24 Leather STudded Gloves (16 AC)*.07 = 1.12 Leather Studded Gorget (16 AC)*.07 = 1.12 Ringmail legs (22 AC)*.22 = 4.84 Closed Helm (30 AC)*.14 = 4.2 Summative Stocatic AC = 27.92 Which means you'll be absorbing 15-30 pnts of dmg on average This is the best overall protection you can get for under 10 dex loss.
Thanks to Kamikaze for this great compilation of articles from past authors in days past.
You can read Paladin's reply to it in the forum.

^ top-Keep 'em coming. [Eric] November 28 - 8:21 AM EST | Well, I must say that I have been receiving some great submissions for the UOPG essay contest. Most so far have been about UO performance and "Starting a character from scratch." The deadline is over two weeks away, so I encourage anyone who wishes to write as essay, to do so. You still have lots of time. If you happened to have missed the contest information when it was originally posted here, you can go here for the rules, guidelines, and all of the other good stuff. If anyone wants to write a mage essay, in-depth PvP essay, or the UOA essay, that's what I'm looking for right now (seeing as how I have a hand full of the other topics). However, I will most definitely still accept essays about the other topics, so don't feel like you can't still write on those.
Keep 'em coming. Cya later. |
^ top-Did Ya Miss Me? [Nieves] November 28 - 12:15 AM EST | Sure you did. Liars.
Ferahgo’s Guide to UO performance:
First off, check the specs of your computer. You can play decently on a 128 Megs of RAM, 400 megahtz processor, a 56k modem, and atleast a 16meg video card.
Second off, check the shard you are playing on. Use UOTrace, and ping your shard. If it’s over 150 ms, and even think about PvP or even extreme PvM, find a new shard. After you find a decent ping, then use the poll feature and send about 50 packets. Hopefully, you'll have no packet loss. If you do, either call and complain to your ISP like mad, or just pick another shard you ping decently to play. (Pick another shard, ISP take forever) Also, you might want to ping the shard you are thinking about playing on at a couple different times: early morning, afternoon, and night, to make sure your connection doesn’t deteriorate later, at a different time.
You also might want to see if you can improve your connection by tweaking it, and if you are on broadband, I suggest you visit one of the best broadband sites on the web, the Nava's Cable Modem/DSL tuning guide (http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/) There you should be able to tweak your modem and settings to improve your connection, or at least make it more stable.
UPGRADE!! If you can afford it, upgrade your computer, especially if you’re going to play UO3D. If you’re already at about 1000 megahtz, 256-512 Megs RAM, and a 32 bit video card, then your good to go. A cheap upgrade that will pack a punch is RAM. A stick of 128 meg SDRAM will run you about $17. You don't need a top of the line Q3 killing box to play UO. All I play on is a 450 megahtz processor, 128 meg RAM, 16bit video card, and a 56k modem. I still can RUN, that's right, on foot, faster than some people on horseback. I can do decently in factions, and never lag out, just from an OK computer and smart gameplay. Here is a list of suggested upgrade priorities by Prime, and are VERY good. (Thanks Prime!)
Upgrade Priorities (In Order of Price/Performance): !!!If you don't have an optical mouse, get one. No more ball cleaning for ya, and makes UO more enjoyable. No more crappy ball movement.!!! 1) If you are still using a 56K, spend the extra money (if available) and get a DSL or Cable. It is worth it's weight in gold.
2) RAM - No doubt the cheapest boost in performance (BTW SDRAM is about $17 for a 128mb stick and $35 for a 256mb)
3) Lower end processor/motherboard - AMD Duron 800/900 and ECS K7S5A (SiS 735) $100+ (and if you want to spend an extra $30-50, 256mb DDR Ram)
4) Lower end graphics card (Raedon 32mb SDR, GeForce2 MX400 64MB) - Performance is going to be better, but it is a little more costly in terms of price/performance ($50-60).
5) 7200rpm Low seek HDD - Worst price to performance but will improve computer load times (40GB - $90+)
I have built many computers and the cheaper ones with lower-end parts have always surprised me as to how well they perform against the "big-boys" (Athlon, Althon XP, Pentium 4).
A note on broadband,no matter what people say, some people can't get it. I live in a town of 70,000 and still can't get it simply because I live more than 3 miles from the box. The signal loses intensity over distance, so DSL isn't a viable option for everyone.
So, to those stuck with 56k, you have a few options. First, go into the modem controls (Start>Settings>Control Panel>Modems) and and go to the properties. Turn up the max speed to as high as it will go. Also, update the drivers for your modem. Test this and see if it helps any. If not, try and switch to a better ISP.
*Note* Updating drivers for most devices will increase the performance for that device, ie. video cards, sound cards, etc. The more expensive, top of the line rigs always seem to disappoint. The performance is great, just not as good as I thought it was going to be.
To change your packet size, go into the Networking part of your control panel, and go to the dial up adapter, advanced, IP packet size and change it to small.
A word on FIFO buffering. To adjust them, the higher you go, the more info the buffer can hold, but there's a chance it can get lost. The lower you go, the more it has to communicate with the CPU, slowing it down and slowing down the ablity to fill back up. If you feel like playing around with the settings, change the recieve to 14 and transmit to 16. (I believe these are defaults). If these help, keep them, but if they interfere, change them back, or slowly lower them.
In UO, you don't need much in terms of rig to really move around well, but I would suggest more than a P2 400mhz (had one for a while) to play now.
Ingame, you can change a few settings to play faster too. I like to turn off music, and all the sounds in game. It usually helps me out with less lag. Also, be smart. You know more about your connection and computer than anyone else. If your having a laggy day, say no to factions, or taking out your 5 WW to the ancient wyrm spawn. And, at no time, take anything out of the bank you can’t afford to lose. That means no 200 of each reg, or that vanq axe. Play it smart and follow these guidelines, and you’ll be lag free, or at least not bunny hopping on a 14.4k modem.
Hope your game play improves :)
Thanks Far.

^ top-Coming Soon to a Shard Near You. [Catlyn] November 27 - 11:31 PM EST | Publish 14 Issues. I have been reading the UO Boards a fair amount lately. I started to keep an ongoing list of issues that were being reported. Here is a bunch of them in no particular order.
*Taming Bug allowing GM Taming in no time. *Smelting issue for smiths. no longer able to smelt some of the coloured items that they made *Decreased Vanq items on level 4/5 chests *Treasure Chests decaying after 15 minutes *Problems Retaming pets after they go wild (Only affects pre-patch pets. Ones tamed after the patch are normal) *Alchemists no longer able to make potions straight into kegs *Tinkers no longer able to work with high end colors unless they have high skill *Some Tailoring items no longer craftable (straw hats, caps) *Multi-gem jewelry no longer craftable *Name Changes to some Holiday gifts (glassware) *Reduced damage to Tinker Trapped Boxes *Runebooks losing titles and 10 charge books no being crafted *Tinker made chests no longer giving gains to lockpicking *Tinker Trapped boxes now giving counts *Smiths having Problems repairing Weapons and armour *Potions not holding there name, but revert to colour *Potions go into main pack at creation, not sub bag the bottles were in
Keep in mind these are reports by players. They are unconfirmed and are strictly rumors.

^ top-Hey Ho the Derry-O, a Factioning We Will Go. [Catlyn] November 27 - 9:41 PM EST | Over on the Update Center of UO, Adrick made a fresh post. He covered a little bit of ground so i am going to break it down into sections.
First, he pointed out the changes made to factions in Pub 14. A complete list can be found here. A quick Scan of the list, and a few pop instantly to the front:
20 You can no longer heal a faction guard if you aren't a member of its faction. Good. This will hopefully mean less Blues getting in the way and keep it to faction fighters only. If you want to get involved, join a faction.
23 Faction titles will no longer display in trammel. Even better. If you are in a faction, you are in it to fight, not for the title. Allowing titles in Tram just adds to the bank posing.
26 Players flagged as aggressors to another player, or criminal for any reason, will not be able to use public moongates. Do I even need to talk about this one?
27 Sigils will not be stealable for 1 hour after a server starts. Now this will be good. Give everyone a fighting chance to defend what they got the night before. It was very frustrating to log in the morning after to learn everything was gone.
33 Corpses will now hue the correct color for looting - a corpse that is orange is lootable (meaning you did damage), while a corpse that is blue is not lootable (it will include enemies you didn't damage). Grey and red corpses are lootable. Now this also is good. Afterall, it is all about the Fighting and the loot. Right?
Adrick also went on to talk about removing blues totally from factions, vanquishing all bugs, and working on strongholds. He then asked for opinions on the following.
1] Lowering the corruption times down to about 8 hours or so to allow more fast-paced conflict and create less of a chance that off-hour, low peak hours will determine the fate of a faction.
2] Allowing guilds to form new factions, possibly as part of an alliance system.
3] Expanding the control factions have over Felucca by looking into dynamic spawns of monsters and resources.
4] Adding more political elements to the leadership of a faction beyond simply voting. This would include putting in some checks and balances to ensure that the commander and those who he appoints are doing a good job in the eyes of a majority of the faction. Also, as part of this, allowing players to vote to remove other players considered a spy by a majority of the faction.
5] Allowing factions to have control over both the town and surrounding area (follow up to item #3). An idea here is that all resource gathering could be taxed by the controlling faction.
All of these are great and lovely ideas. Only problem I see is, will we see any of them in the next decade?
If you want, send Adrick some feedback at Adrick@uo.com.

^ top-We Get Golems Though!! [Catlyn] November 27 - 12:36 AM EST | OSI really seems to have it out for tinkers in the last patch. On top of the changes to Jewelry and Boom Boxes, there is more complaints on the UO Boards.
Salt Wrote
Guess what, your locked chests got nerfed as well, GM Locks are now 100% success for 73 lockpicking skill, never fail, never break a pick, no gains.
I think they are lvl 1 locks... Thread found here.
I logged on to test to try and confirm this one way or another. I made Gm Carp/GM Tink Chests and then set about picking them. I was unable to pick it until a display skill of 76.4 and would still fail occasionally. It has been a long time (Pre UO:R) since i built a lockpicker. If anyone can shed some light on this for me, send me an email at Catlyn@uopowergamers.com
In the mean time, now might be a good time to finish off the aspiring lockpicker on your account before Publish 14 comes to a shard near you.

^ top-If you like and play UO, you're probably sick of this. [Eric] November 25 - 1:46 AM EST | I'm willing to bet many UO players who read this and many other gaming websites are getting sick of hearing about DAoC. Sorry. ;) UOPG doesn't yet have a "general gaming news" section, so the main page is the spot for that, right now.
Anyways, if you play DAoC or are interested in it, I suggest reading this article. It's a very in depth article that goes into many pros and cons about DAoC.

^ top-More Tinker Trap Nerfing [Nieves] November 24 - 11:43 PM EST | There is something else that I have discovered with the nerfed Tinker Traps. You can't GM Remove Trap on them anymore. My skill was 98.5 before the patch and there it is staying. Now, the only traps I can get skill off of are the ones in Nuljelm's guard towers. And how many are there? Seven or Eight? Per facet? Oh yeah, and if you die you are hooped. There are no healers there or mongates, which means you have to use your "Help I'm Stuck" option for the day. Lame. Thanks OSI.
Lame indeed.
Thanks Raden.

^ top-It's contest time. [Eric] November 24 - 11:05 PM EST | Thanks to all of the people from our forum who have given me ideas, I have finally decided on the contest that I’m going to have here at UOPG. As you may have figured, this will be an essay writing contest.
You may write an essay on the following topics:
- Starting and maintaining a guild : Where to begin, how to recruit, how to be successful, and other various tips.
- How to start & build a character from scratch with no help. This essay should assume that the player wishing to start from scratch with no help has some UO knowledge. This essay could include how to fund your character without any help, the best way to get started with skills (best templates), etc.
- A UO performance essay: How to get the best UO performance out of your computer.
- A PvP Essay: While this is a very broad topic, we’re really looking for an essay that covers most aspects of PvP, including how to be the most successful (something everyone wants to know). This essay can include information about factions and/or chaos/order if you wish.
- UOA/Macro essay - How to use UOA and in-game macros to get the maximum benefit.
- Mage skills essay: Best ways to raise resist, magery, eval. int., meditation and how they work (what resist is needed for certain monsters, different mage tactics for both PvP and PvM, etc.).
- A Powergamer essay: This will be left to your own creativity. Something along the lines of how to be a powergamer, what it means to be a powergamer, etc. Definitely include various powergaming tactics.
- If you have any other ideas or wish to write an essay on another topic, e-mail me. If I like it, I’ll let you write about it.
The essay topic list is subject to additions.
Now, before you go crazy with writing an essay, let me lay down a few of the rules/guidelines that you agree to upon submitting an essay:
1. You may submit more than one essay for this contest. If you want to write about PvP and starting and maintaining a guild, you may. Submitting more than one essay can possibly increase the chances of "winning" because you will have more than one essay to compare to others entering into this contest. However, you cannot win more than 1 prize.
2. ALL entries MUST be your original work. You MAY NOT copy an essay from another UO information website or any other source.
3. When submitting an essay, please include your name (forum name or whichever name you want to be announced as, in the event than you win), shard, and send your e-mail submissions with the subject "UOPG Essay Contest."
4. You may either write your essay in an e-mail or in a Word document attached to an e-mail (.doc file).
5. All submissions become property of UOPG. (Of course, if your essay is posted, you WILL be given credit for it).
6. UOPG staff members are not eligible for winning a prize. They may submit essays if they wish (as they always can), but they will not be entered into the contest.
How will these essays be judged, you ask? They will be judged by the following:
1. Depth and detail – This is pretty self-explanatory. If your essay is 3 sentences long, it will probably be thrown in the trash. However, even if your essay is long, we will still value quality over quantity. Don’t assume a 10 page essay is going to win over all essays of shorter length.
2. Originality – If you submit an essay that you copied from somewhere or reworded, you will automatically become disqualified.
3. Accuracy – In order to have a winning essay, it must be accurate. I don’t want to be reading a PvP essay that recommends PKing in Trammel. Now, there is some information known by UO players that can be controversial. For example, if your essay says, "The best way to PvP is by using a mage," this is simply an opinion. It will not be considered "not accurate," because mages might be the best PvPers, or they might not be. There is no proof for either statement.
4. Mechanics – If your essay has countless spelling errors and various grammatical problems, this won’t help your essay. I’m not saying that if you spell a word wrong your essay won’t win, but spelling and grammar add to the overall appearance of the essay. It would be best to revise your essay before submitting it.
Now, let’s get to the good part: the prizes. Currently, most of the prizes are on the Great Lakes shard, since this is where I have what I can give away. If anyone wants to contact me to either donate a prize or possibly trade gold between shards, please do. In this contest, there will be 3 winners. Their prizes are as follows:
First place winner: A choice between: 500k gold (Great Lakes), one first or second year reward (any shard, your choice of reward), or a clothing bless deed (Great Lakes).
Second place winner: Choice between: 150k (Great Lakes or Catskills) , 5k iron ingots (Great Lakes), holiday tree deed (Great Lakes), or potted plant (Great Lakes).
Third place winner: Honorable mention at UOPG. Your essay will be placed in the essays section (with your name), along with the first and second place essays. (NOTE: It’s possible that there could be more than one honorable mention.)
Prizes are subject to change. (Probably only for the better).
Finally, all essays should be submitted to UOPGEssays@aol.com . The contest deadline is Saturday, December 15 (2001). Stay tuned to http://www.uopowergamers.com for any updates to this contest.
Thanks.

^ top-Carpentry, et al. [KH] November 24 - 11:00 PM EST | Just finished Carpentry last night. The total amount of wood consumed from around 48 to GM was between 54k - 58k (I lost track of some of the earliest amounts). The skill guide here on UOPG is basically accurate, although there are a couple of things that should be mentioned.
First, there's a nasty, barren stretch between the skill level that lets you make wooden shields and the start of quaterstaff country (specifically, between 65ish and 73.6). While you can do it making nothing but shields, you'll grind through a lot of extra wood getting there. If you carry enough Tailoring (40 skill) you can blast through this plateau simply by making fishing poles, starting at 68.4. Easy enough.
Second, just like smithing or tinkering, you can expect much better gains if you make a variety of items. Instead of banging through endless quarterstaffs or gnarleds, throw in harder items as you are able... ie: 2 gnarleds, a qstaff, then a short music stand when gain slows down in the mid to high 80s, then working in easels in moderation through the 90s. I finished from around 95 working the same macro of 2 gnarleds, then 1 easel. Gain was never less than 2.5 - 3.0 / p-hour through the 90s (which is much better than I remember it being when I GM'd Carp in January, the difference being the larger variety of items I included). Incidentally, I even managed to get a healthy amount of gain doing gnarleds (for seeding bulk orders) out of burst.
The new crafting menus take a little getting used to, but the "make last" option allow you to make items significantly faster than you used to. My only complaint is that it takes a certain amount of time to convert large quantities of logs to boards. Be sure to do this well in advance of your powerhour.
In the end, I even ended up with 52k in gold selling the shields, qstaffs, and gnarleds to empty my pack; enough to pick up the glassblowing and stonecrafting books once I finished.
Speaking of the new crafting skills - if you still have questions, I suggest you have a look at this page prepared by Catlyn, one of our regular posters in the Forum. It covers pretty much everything you need to know about glassblowing, and hopefully there'll be a stoncrafting companion page up soon (I love making work for other people).
And speaking of stonecrafting - I really suggest people think twice before double-clicking the book that allows you to dig up granite. Simply put, the seperate pieces of granite are a big pain in the ass. There's no on-off switch for gathering them, so having to constantly pick them out of your pack when you're trying to mine for ore gets old after a while. They aren't stackable, so consider carefully how you're going to store them (I really hate to think about how the flood of extra items might be adding to server-based lag). It shouldn't be a difficult problem to solve - imagine a bulk order deed item like the leather gloves of mining, except they lower Mining skill by 0.1, allowing for an on-off switch. |
^ top-T Shirts [Nieves] November 24 - 11:44 AM EST | They are going so if you want one, get your order in now before I am sold out.
They are 15.00 for the shirt plus shipping and handling (typically 20.00 anywhere in the Continental US).
When ordering, send me a request via email and include your name, size, and complete mailing address with country if outside the US. If you don't have access to a checking acount or a credit card, let me know and we can work out other arrangements.

^ top-Why Mess With Something That Ain't Broken? [Nieves] November 23 - 6:21 PM EST | Well shit.
Regarding traps, there are quite a few complaints on the boards that tinker traps are way weaker now than they used to be. This means no deadly poison trap any longer - only lesser poison is possible, and no tough damage with explosion traps - only 5 - 15 HP damage are dealt with the new explosion traps.
BOGUSGREENMONKEYBALLS! That's the whole reason I wanted a GM Tinker in the first place!
Finally, jewelry is now crafted rather differently with the menu. You can no longer craft items like a "100 diamonds bracelet" or a "50 rubys necklace". Only "diamond bracelets", "ruby necklaces" and stuff like that are craftable after Publish 14. I expect to bekome the other player made jewelry to become quite rare over time. Oh, and the ring has been changed and renamed as well. While it used to call itself a "weddingband" and was newbified, it is now a plain, non-newbified ring.
I don't know about you, but I thought it was cool seeing a 100 diamond bracelet. ::shrugs:: And the wedding band was one of the most coveted things amongst "that crowd". Lame.
Caps and tall straw hats (as opposed to the regular straw hats) are no longer craftable. I really liked my caps! Short pants are finally craftable!
I have a blessed cap (because I could, I did it). That make it worth more now?
I guess. :[

^ top-A day of rememberance. [Vasilias] November 21 - 9:09 PM EST | Posted by Gloval in the forums. Words alone can not embelish the fact that true friendships can be built within a game. So remember those and cherish those whom you carry as friends for in a flash they can be gone.
I had been playing Ultima Online for about 5 months when I met Jenny. She was a member of the Atlantic Mage Tower, the guild I was in at the time. One day at the AMT Tower, a dungeon crawl was put together and that's where she and I met. We went off someplace deep and dark and killed bad things and took gold and came back to the tower having a good time. Later that week I was back at the AMT Tower looking for some friends to go dungeon crawling with. The Tower was empty except for one person, Jenny. So I asked her if she was interested in going dungeon crawling. She hesitated a moment, then said why not. As I recall, we went to T2A and promptly began a tradition of Aldroud dies and Jenny rezes. We got quite good at our rolls. One day I was being chased by a PK east of Britain. I ran down the road and slowed when I came into the guard zone and yelled for the guards. The teleporting guards whacked the PK and I proceeded to loot my merry way through his belongings. After loading up on all his possessions, I wandered into Britain to gloat. I used the red moon gate in the library to transport myself to the AMT Tower so I could sit in peace and count my money. I walked in to see Jenny talking with another member of the AMT. I sat down and rooted through the loot, finding a ring, I handed it to Jenny just on a lark. She took it, hesitated a moment, then said 'Why Aldroud, is this a proposal?' Turns out I handed her an amethyst wedding band. I hemmed and hawed and blushed and we all laughed about it. We began to play more and more often with each other. I brought her to the house I shared with Odin and Raistlin and Spudz. We moved some furniture around and now there was room for 5. We became best friends, Jenny and me, with Odin, Raistlin and Spudz forming our little grouping. Time went by and we grew closer. Eventually I did propose to her. She had become more to me than just a person to play games with and I became more for her too. We had a big wedding in Nujlem at the palace. A lot of AMT folks attended, plus all the friends we had made in UO. She and I spent almost every night playing. Sometimes we would stay up till server down just sitting in her sea side cottage talking. We talked about everything and nothing at all for hours on end. She made me laugh and she made me cry. When I came up with the idea for an Orc guild she supported me 100%. She used to transport me about when I was just a wee runtee. The first Orc function was me, her, and Odin (Grishnak, Zhan'ee, and Og'Din) bombing the Mage Tower Academy opening night. She build the webpage for us and kept it up to date. She taught me HTML and how to do things on the computer I never knew.
Jenny was my best friend and I loved her.
Jenny was killed by a drunk driver on 1 November, 2001.

^ top-The State of Great Lakes Roleplaying [Nieves] November 21 - 2:24 PM EST | A few months ago, I put up a piece on the, then, current state of Great Lakes Roleplaying. It wasn't a positive one, and it was a shocking one to many folks.
Well, I am here, once again to talk about it.
Kick back. If anyone knows me when I am on a "tear", I can get long winded. And the boss is out of the office today. Joy!
Currently, the forces of the Empire of Armageddon (EoA; Alliance) are "invading" the various cities throughout the lands of Brittania, Felucca side.
The Defenders of Lord British (CDB; Defenders) have signed on to try and stop us. Yes, I am on the "bad side". Only newbies play goodies. Kidding! Sheesh, relax. Anyway...
Our first city was Minoc. I believe the idea was that we would take the mining town and take over the mines and use the facilities to continue building our "war machine". Either way, it makes sense.
In our initial push into the city (we sailed there), after running around and some miner skirmishes, I led a charge and I got blasted by two mages and a jacker. Deathmoan.
In the end, the URKs (Bloodrock Orcs) managed to push the defenders back to the "goal" (a building in the north center of town) and was then met up with Order fighters (URKs are Chaos) and then had to fight 3 fronts (blue blockers being the 3rd). Even so, the URKS were kicking major ass. And since we had lost alot of our folks, our War minister called a retreat and we called it a stalemate (IMHO: If you didn't take the objective, you lost). It was probably a smart move because of the blue blockers and Order fighters.
We have had skirmishes since then and EoA, with the exception of last night's fight, won each night.
Last night, we had to quit midway through the fight because one of the guilds was blue to 1/2 of EoA and we couldn't exactly deal with them.
The tactics we used was similar to those of the URKS on the first night. We had 5-6 archers in our center with 2 mages assigned to heal them. We had 3-5 man groups (about 6 of them) with at least one mage who's job was to keep the enemy skirmishers away while the archers did the dirty work. We also had a group of 3+ Jackers and a mage whose job was to take down any enemy mages.
We were doing well, up until the blue guild.
But know what? It was fun as fucking hell.
"Well, that's all fine and good Nieves, but what IS the state of GL RP?" Hey, relax, I am getting to it. Really.
We have lost 2-3 Archmages (overall leader of the EoA)--including the Architect of this scenario, have had a War Minister step down, accusations of various sorts: broken war rules (reskills, looting, etc.), leaders only seeing their own "grand plan" as opposed to the goal of the overall scenario (FUN!), and the removal of two guilds from EoA: one guild went "too far", and another actually betrayed the Alliance by trying to sell our battle plans to CDB, [Although, in an RP sense it's interesting when you have that sort of Intrigue, but you can guess how the Alliance reacted to that betrayel], meetings lasting all night, petty bickering, etc. etc.
But, if you take all the above away, and I can say, it's working.
The Great Lakes RP Community should be proud of itself. I am. People are pushing to look past the petty bullshit and attempting to achieve the goal of this scenario. Right now, the current Archmage has instituted some changes that have helped (I.E.-meetings with 1 hour long time limits and a preset agenda for each meeting instead of "winging it") and has pretty much cut alot of the bullshit out (even though there is still some to settle, it's still better than before). Those that decide they want to remain in a "petty state" and bicker all the time, are being left behind. Those that have felt slighted are actually hearing the explanations of why it seemed they were left out when in fact they really weren't. Guild Masters are working together when in the past they wouldn't even answer a "hi".
Hell, I had been KNOWN in my RP's circle for actually attacking, on sight, anyone with certain guild titles. Since we are allies with a few of those guilds, they are "no touchie". And I have learned that these people, when they are watching your back, can be trusted. And they do the job well.
So, it's working.
A RP community on any UO shard should always see past their petty differences and NOT be elitist (Read: TUR <--Asshoes) and have open ended events.
Rules should be decided upon, if any BEFORE the event starts.
If a difference arises, talk about it and listen to the other's arguement.
If you can't resolve it amicably, take it up with your Guild Master and let them deal with it. In fact, you should ALWAYS talk to a guild officer before taking matters to your own hand (me included ::winks at the Jabbuk::).
It's all about planning, agreed upon rules, getting the message out to ALL the participants about what's going on and what the agreed upon rules are, and keeping the #1 goal of any event in mind: FUN!

^ top-What do we need? [Eric] November 20 - 9:06 PM EST | As far as essays go, what would you guys (the readers) be interested in an essay about? I'm looking to establish some kind of essay-writing contest with the prize being something valuable on the Great Lakes shard (possibly a large sum of gold or maybe an item of high value). All I really need is your input, on what you think we need an essay about (UO-related of course).
If you are unfamiliar with what essays UOPG currently has, check out the "UOPG Essays" link on the left menu of your browser. Any feedback/ideas can be posted in this thread. Any and all feedback would be appriciated.
Thanks.

^ top-UOPG Is Hiring [Nieves] November 20 - 1:26 PM EST | I am looking for highly motivated individuals to fill 3 roles here at UOPG.
UO News Reporter-Your mission is to scour the UO web boards and websites and find any and all information related to Ultima Online and report it here. I am not looking for people that cut and paste and say: read this. I would like someone to at least add commentary. I am not looking for a Nieves clone (read: saying "fuck" 10 times in a post isn't a requirement), but someone that likes to write and is willing to share their thoughts and commentary without hesitation. I would rather this person have been in UO for at least 12 months. And ranting is encouraged :)
Story Teller-Someone willing to write tales about their in game adventures in our story section. Pictures are welcome. No time limit to this person but must be able to pen a good story at least once a week. (If Dervla is available, there is a spot for you girl).
Overall Gaming Reporter-Mainly I would like Neverwinter Nights covered but all other games are encouraged to be posted about.
Note: The current base of updaters are not being removed. But, with their busy schedules, they cannot post as I would like them too. The new breed of updaters will just add to our existing pool.
How do you apply? Simple: Pick a topic and make a post about it in the UOPG Forum and email me a link. I will read it and gauge the reaction of the readers and then make my decision after a week's time.
If you wish to remain anonymous as a poster, that's fine. I can keep your anonymity. I have done it in the past with our Counselor Anonymous.
Also, I have not forgotten those of you you that have bought a T Shirt the first month they were available. I still have that copy of Shattered Galaxy at home. Unfortunately, I can't find the emails with your names. I think I lost them when I reformatted my hard drive.
If you have bought a shirt before November 1st, email me and I will put your name in a hat, and then have my 9 year old pull out a name and name the winner here on the front page.
The deadline for getting your name into me is December 1st. On December 2nd, I pull the names. No delays this time. Scouts honor.

^ top-Yes - they got me too. [Eric] November 19 - 5:18 PM EST | Well, like many others, I have succumbed to the forces of Mythic Entertainment. In other words, last night I went out and picked up my copy of Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC). No, I will not be doing away with UO - I will still keep my accounts, and I will probably come back to the game from time to time. I just thought after 3 1/2 years of one game (with the interruption of Diablo 2 in between), it's time to try a game that many have deemed "worth trying." Many have stated on various different forums that they don't want to leave "several years of hard work and game playing" for a new game. I feel the same way. Having played UO back before T2A was released, I've been through almost everything that the game has had to offer. Would I leave all of that for a new game that still has a level of uncertainty? Not a chance. I'm still going to read the daily UO news and still going to post on UOPG with the news and my thoughts on it. UO isn't a game that you throw away within a matter of minutes just because something else comes along. Since I think it's time to try something new, I'm going to try DAoC. I've probably played the game only for a total of 30 minutes so far, so I'm not going to make any judgements yet. Yes, the graphics, sound, and interface kick ass, BUT this is not what makes a game. UO in my personal opinion has some of the worst graphics, and the game has always kicked ass. Just because a game has good graphics *cough* Everquest *cough cough* does NOT mean it's a good game.
No, don't go out and buy a $40 online game just because some guy on a gaming website said it's a good idea. But, if you find yourself bored with UO, this might be something worth considering. Read about it, and make your own judgement. (Note: This thread is really worth reading if you're curious about how DAoC compares to UO.)
That's all for now. Cya later. |
^ top-UO Vs. DAoC [Nieves] November 19 - 12:52 PM EST | I play both UO and DaoC. I havent logged into UO in a about 2 months cause of Camelot and some technical difficulties. So far DaoC is pretty cool. The graphics are nice and the spells are pretty. But the leveling is become a real pain. Solo’ing is slow and dangerous. Getting a group together and organized can be hard too, even being in a big guild. But when you do get a good group, you can level like mad, or atleast gain good xp (experience).
I had a hard time at first solo’ing. Then I figured out that mez (para) works wonders. Being a Runemaster, melee is 100% out of the question. Even if I get a mob (monster, critter) down to ¼ life, I’ll probably still die. That’s saying the mob is yellow (equal to my level). So that means I have to kill the mob entirely with spells, which isnt easy cause you really cant hit and run Like in UO. So now I hit the mob with 2 bolts, mez, then run and bolt 2 more times. This usually takes me down to ½ power (mana).
But UO is a lot more….flexible. I like the fact that you can do just about anything you want , when you want in UO. Plus recall and gating kicks ass. DaoC doesn’t have gates, recalling or horses (you can take horse ride to other towns for fast travel, but that’s it). The pvp in DaoC is… different. I’ve only seen a few fights so far. The first time I fought I solo’d a red Hibernian elf caster. He was red to me(2-4 level’s higher then me) and I died fast. The other time I was involved in a big brawl. About 50 vrs. 50 (Hib vs Mid again) and that was fun but disorganized. I helped kill a few, but I got sniped at the end. (damn stealth archers)
People tend to be more nice in Camelot vrs UO were its fun to be a dick . That’s pretty much cause there really isnt a chance to be a dick in Camelot except on the few occasions(kill stealing, not rez’ing the dead, ect…). I miss having a house. Camelot dosnt have houses and few banks.
This wasn’t well thought out, but just thought I’d fill yas in on what I’ve seen so far
Hemlock lvl 25 runemaster Merlin Midgard
I saw the DAoC box this Sunday on the shelf at Wall Mart....and I passed it by. Then I went home, logged into UO, got into a free for all PvP tournament on the roof of a friend's Tower, and finished 2nd.
Um, can you do that in DAoC?

^ top-Nieves Has Sunday Updates [Nieves] November 18 - 9:46 AM EST | Jeesuz. There is alot of stuff out.
First off, the music that OSI is introducing for UO this coming January-February is absolutely amazing. They only have two tracks, but the Jhelom one is my personal favorite of the two (the other is Vesper).
Also, you can see new images at the Lord Blackthorn Website. I especially like the Ancient Wyrm and the Swamp Dragon. It's taking an aweful long time to bring the images up but they are worth it, IMNSHO.
Horse Stamina Horses are an advantage in movement. Stamina limitations act as a limiter to this advantage, which manifests in both PvP and PvM. A mounted person can run faster, forever, than someone who isn't mounted. Standard horses have less stamina than other mounts, because characters who can ride the higher stamina mounts (either through taming skill, or faction / veteran status) should have a slight advantage in movement. Horse stamina drain occurs faster on a higher connection; as a trade off to moving much faster than characters on a slower connection, this advantage will be countered to some degree by the horse fatiguing. There are several ways for players to increase their horse's stamina:
· Bring apples - They restore approx. 1/3 of a mount's stamina. · Train your horse - Spar with it, etc. It will gain dex and thereby stamina. · Manage horse stamina - Run only when necessary. Trotting barely lowers a horse's stamina at all.
[...]
Just as a note, this change was pulled from Publish 14, and we are targeting to implement it in Publish 15, which we don't have a date set for just yet. __________________ Cynthe Community Manager ORIGIN Systems
Well, as long as it's in the near future, I am happy. It's nice to be able to run forever, but it's imbalancing.
Monster AI [..] Some other examples of new AI and abilities that we did already to give you an idea of what we can do:
-Gargoyle Enforcers call for help and are healed by Gargoyle Destroyers. -Exodos Minion and Overseer magical barriers -Savage Shamans doing a tribal dance casting group spells -Needing a bola to knock a savage rider off its mount
We have plenty more in store for the McFarlane monsters as well.
The idea is to create monsters that are more fun, interesting, and challenging. AI is kind of a misnomer in the gaming industry. The concept isn't to make monsters "smarter"...it's to make them more fun and challenging to fight...which in a sense, makes them appear smarter.
Bring it!
Misc Stuff I don't feel like commenting on:
The items listed in our "Next Update" section include a wide variety of updates and fixes (noted here), and these changes were recently published to the Lake Superior shard while we monitored them. We noticed some instances that required additional attention.
We have brought down the Lake Superior shard, and upon its return, the items listed below will have been corrected. We will continue monitoring the Lake Superior shard for any further issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Fletching problems: The fletching skill was not properly noting/checking the fletcher's actual skill level when crafting, with players receiving error messages stating they don't have enough skill to make a given weapon, and non-GM fletchers were unable to craft heavy crossbows. These issues have been fixed.
Too many arrows being used per shot: Archers have been using up more than one arrow for each arrow shot. Sometimes, for example, 3 arrows will disappear from the archer's pack when only one arrow was fired. This has been fixed.
Pre-patch Moonstones: When players attempted to use pre-patch moonstones, they did not work and the user was told that he "cannot bury it here." These pre-patch moonstones should now work properly.
Golems could not be healed with the new tinker menu: Golems should now be able to be healed, with the aid of a new feature in the new tinkering menu.
Some players are not being paid for completed bulk blacksmithing orders: Player who receive & complete bulk orders should now receive the proper payment for them.
Runebooks were not displaying their player-created titles: This has been fixed, and runebooks should now properly display their player-created titles.
Runic Hammers were allowing players to enchant armor: This will no longer happen. Runic hammers will still enchant weapons, as intended, but will no longer enchant armor. Any armor that was enchanted in this manner will lose their enchantment.
Skill gains in Cartography were advancing too rapidly: This has been fixed.
According to Blackheath of THB, Cart was WAY broken. This is a good thing that they caught and corrected it.
And about the Runic Hammer thingie:
So far, only 4 middle-range rewards have been given out on LS. No high-end rewards have been given out yet. The highest runic hammer is Bronze (only one so far). This means the highest craftable weapon is Might, at the moment.
The fame levels are as designed. Although, they look to be a bit high. We already had reduced the fame reward from feedback on Test Center. So far, we have not decided to reduce them, though.
Er...why do it on Test then? Is that to make sure it is not imbalancing? If yes, ok. But if not, then maybe make the Test Center the same as LS so players can test it themselves and see how the new system works?

^ top-The Madness Begins [Eric] November 15 - 5:50 PM EST | From XBOX.com, in this article:
Xbox Launch: Midnight Madness November 15, 2001 At one minute after midnight, Xbox madness ensued at the new flagship Toys “R” Us store in New York’s Times Square. Thousands of gamers came to celebrate the North American launch of the most powerful video game system ever. And they came for the chance to be among the first in the world to get their hands on an Xbox.

^ top-We aren't alone... [Nieves] November 15 - 7:40 AM EST | First the text:
This is an e-mail from a young ensign aboard USS Winston Churchill to his parents. (Churchill is an Arleigh Burke class AEGIS guided missile destroyer, commissioned March 10, 2001, and is the only active US Navy warship named after a foreign national.).
"Dear Dad,
We are still at sea. The remainder of our port visits have all been cancelled. We have spent every day since the attacks going back and forth within imaginary boxes drawn in the ocean, standing high-security watches, and trying to make the best of it. We have seen the articles and the photographs, and they are sickening. Being isolated, I don't think we appreciate the full scope of what is happening back home, but we are definitely feeling the effects.
About two hours ago, we were hailed by a German Navy destroyer, Lutjens, requesting permission to pass close by our port side. Strange, since we're in the middle of an empty ocean, but the captain acquiesced and we prepared to render them honors from our bridgewing. As they were making their approach, our conning officer used binoculars and announced that Lutjens was flying not the German, but the American flag. As she came alongside us, we saw the American flag flying half-mast and her entire crew topside standing at silent, rigid attention in their dress uniforms. They had made a sign that was displayed on her side that read "We Stand By You."
There was not a dry eye on the bridge as they stayed alongside us for a few minutes and saluted. It was the most powerful thing I have seen in my life.
The German Navy did an incredible thing for this crew, and it has truly been the highest point in the days since the attacks. It's amazing to think that only half-century ago things were quite different. After Lutjens pulled away, the Officer of the Deck, who had been planning to get out later this year, turned to me and said, "I'm staying Navy." I'll write you when I know more about when I'll be home, but this is it for now.
Love you guys."
Then the picture.
Note: The image is huge.

^ top-I had gotten away from... [Nieves] November 14 - 8:38 PM EST | Cutting and Pasting complete articles and just posting tidbits with my comments. But Alai's comments were so interesting, I had to post them here again. You know, in case you don't read the UO.com page and stuff.
As I sit here in my office, listening to the whirring of my computers, a smile is inching across my face. Every time I get a spare moment to think about what’s coming up for UO I get all a-tingle again. This is no small feat, as I’ve been working on it for three and a half years now. I’ve survived T2A, Renaissance, and Third Dawn – I am a seasoned veteran. Nothing should faze me anymore, and there certainly shouldn’t be anything I could get excited over. Right?
Well, I’m excited. The upcoming releases are going to knock your socks off. We’re going full-bore with content, new models, new spell effects, new sprites for the 2D players, new audio… a lot of stuff. Tack onto that the huge leaps and bounds we’re making in improving the clients and I am simply astounded. Of course, the client is where most of my interest lies – being the Lead Client Programmer now, so that is where I shall focus my thoughts.
The upcoming client patches are going to have lots of goodies for the 3D client, somewhat less so for the 2D client. I should note that this is not because we have less interest in the 2D client, but because the 3D client has greater potential – and has a greater need for improvement. I decided this “Comments” post would serve mostly to share my excitement with the rest of you, so I’ll just delve into what we’ll be releasing “soon”: We have taken an initiative to wipe out the bugs in the Party System and started with the clients. The Party System will be more stable and pleasant to deal with than ever.
Several aesthetic improvements will be coming to the Third Dawn client soon. This includes mip-mapping to reduce “noise” in textures, a fix for a problem with alpha maps on the wings of dragons and the like, as well as some fancy text rendering code. These changes result in a greatly superior looking Third Dawn client.
Our 2D client is getting a “Quick Menu” of its own.
The Third Dawn client is getting support for more fonts. Different fonts will be used all over the interface, and can also be selected by the player for in-game chat.
Both clients are getting a new interface for acquiring help and information regarding playing Ultima Online. This will be a searchable, cross-indexed font of useful information players can access in the game. This system will launch with a less than complete data set, but we’ll be filling it in rapidly.
The ability to switch from full screen mode and back again in real time has been added to the Third Dawn client. Players can also resize their Third Dawn client window as big as they like – limited only by the ability of their video card.
We have also added several performance enhancements to the Third Dawn client. The overall frame rate is up, and zooming in your view will yield an even greater frame rate – very useful at banks.
Players will soon benefit from indicators on the Shard Selection screen of both clients which will relate the amount of latency and packet loss between them and the Ultima Online shards. All this, and more which I’m going to keep under my hat for the time being! The client is slowly undergoing a progressive overhaul to create a more stable, faster game-playing environment. This is due to all the people who work on the client: Greyburn, BulldoZ, Indy, Jalek, FierY iCe, and myself (Alai). That’s a lot of people working hard to improve the quality of just the client alone, with more on the server. Ultima Online has a long, glorious future ahead of it. I hope you stay with us – or you’ll miss the best of it!
Special Addition:
Every time I check up on the boards, I see at least one post where somebody could use a quick review of some of the special interface features of the Third Dawn client. So here it is: If you can’t click on something because it’s too small, or buried under other objects, press and hold Shift and Ctrl down to bring up “Object Handles.” You can drag/click/target these things like you could the actual object. If one Object Handle is obscuring the one you’re after, right click on it to get rid of it and dig your way to the item you were looking for.
If you hold down Shift when you drag a stack of items, it will pick up the WHOLE stack without being prompted about how many you want.
Similarly, if you hold down Alt and Shift when you drag a stack of items, you’ll only pick up one.
The Third Dawn client has a command history. Assuming you haven’t remapped the macro, you can press Alt-Up and Alt-Down to cycle through commands you’ve used recently. If you prefer to use different keys for this, create some new macros that use “PrevCommand” and “NextCommand.”
When shopping in the Third Dawn client, you can buy the maximum quantity of an item by holding down the Shift key and double-clicking on its listing in the shopping gump instead of sitting there holding down the little “+” button.
Open up your options display and switch to the macro editing section in the Third Dawn client. See that gray rectangle to the right of the key entry field? Drag that off the gump and put it on your desktop. You can double-click that icon whenever you want to use that macro. This is especially useful for using skills. You can also re-label that icon by changing the text in the “Name” field of the macro-editing screen before you drag it off.
You can create a “Command” macro in the Third Dawn client to execute any command you could enter into the main input field. This includes gestures - just create a Command macro with the parameter `bow. Note: that’s the single quote key on the tilde (~) button. Now drag off the macro icon….
The four small boxes to the left of the paperdoll are used to equip and remove small articles of equipment in the ring, necklace, wrist, and ear slots.
If you stick several status bars, spell icons, or macro icons together, you can drag the whole mess of them around at once if you hold the Shift key while you do it.
Alai Lead Client Programmer Ultima Online
If 1/2 the stuff I am hearing is right, UO3D is going to make a HUGE leap in functionality and stability this coming Winter (guess which month). The 2D client will start to kick ass as well (which means, it will be more stable).
Hmmm...is 2002 going to be the year that UO takes back it's command of the MMOPG market? We will see....
Hasta.

^ top-Spirituality...00oo00ooo000?? [Nieves] November 14 - 12:49 PM EST | Sprituality has been "designed":
Once the player selects a Virtue, the player will be given a task based on that Virtue.
Humility task: Upon visiting the Shrine of Humility, players will be asked to pursue a Humility-based task. Players will be asked to kill an amount of monsters which would normally gain them “Admirable” level of Fame, although no actual fame will be gained for these kills during this task period. Players will be notified when they achieve their task, at which time they will also gain some Spirituality and Humility, as well as be able to continue gaining Fame.
Sacrifice task: Upon visiting the Shrine of Sacrifice, players will be asked to pursue a Sacrifice-based task. Players will be told to tithe a certain, specific amount of gold at the Shrine of Sacrifice, into a certain chest placed there. If players put in the exact amount of gold requested, they will gain some Spirituality and Sacrifice. If there is not enough gold, the chest will refuse the offering.
What do you get?
Characters who have achieved any steps on the path of Spirituality will recover from being dead faster than other characters, resurrecting with a few more hit points and mana than normal. The exact numbers are still to be determined, although it is not likely that they will exceed 50% of the character’s maximum natural stats. A player who resurrects through use of his Sacrifice power will not gain these additional, post-resurrection recovery points. Ghosts are normally only understood by those who successfully use the Spirit Speak skill. Characters who have achieved any steps on the path of Spirituality will be understood by anyone while as a ghost, including those who listeners who are not using Spirit Speak.
Yeehaw. Neato.
How about 3 Free Resurrections of a fallen player a week?
And Cal wrote: We don't have an idea for Honor yet, but am open to ideas.
Thoughts?

Um...I thought Honor was already designed
I must be confused or something. Go ahead and check out the Honor description page. They have a picture of an arena. Looks pretty cool and it's a small space. No more Flight of Horses! It looks like it's in Green Acres. But what do I know?
Also, is it me, or is Stratics slow as hell now?

^ top-More news to go with your coffee. [Eric] November 14 - 8:19 AM EST | Yep, we UOPG writers get up bright and early to write the news. Calandryll posted the following about vases and rares...:
This will be added to FYI soon.
Currently the vases and other items crafted with the stone carving skill are named the same as their server rare counterparts. This is the result of a bug in the stone crafting skill and we are going to fix it in a future publish. The fix will change the name of all current and future crafted vases and will not change the name of the "rare" vases. We expect to publish this fix in an early week of the next scenario. At this time we do not have a specific date. Players are advised to not purchase a "rare" vase until after this fix is published as there is no way to differentiate the two types at this time.
We cannot do it right away as we are in the middle of publishing publish 14. To cram this fix in now would be a really, really bad idea as far as merging code goes. The latest the fix will be is the beginning of the next scenario, but we could do it sooner depending on how publish 14 goes. I will keep you posted on the schedules.
This has to do with keeping a promise. I promised players that the names for stonecrafting would be different and despite this bug, I will do everything I can to keep that promise. If for some reason something comes up code wise that prevents the fix when we test it, that's one thing, but it's a bug and we are going to do out best to fix it.
OSI honors promises? Interesting. Also, the following was added to the Latest Updates. (You've seen these before, probably when they were in Concept). :
We fixed a bug causing areas in Ilshenar to produce pieces of ore that didn't produce ingots when smelted, and a direct result of that bug fix was that ore areas will now restock independently of each other. Other changes were made at the same time to increase the rarity of rare ores, as well as give experienced miners the ability to influence their frequency of obtaining the rarer types of ore.
Here is what changed:
- Ore zone restock times are now random, where they used to restock on a set interval simultaneously across the entire server. The average restock time is shorter by approximately two minutes than the old fixed interval.
- The amount of ore stocked in a zone is no longer constant, but is now randomized. The minimum amount is higher than it used to be.
- Ore zones will now have a chance to change color every time they restock . We set the odds of a zone changing color to a very low number. Basically, if a particular zone is mined every minute the server is up day after day, then on average it will change color once per month (but it could happen much sooner or much later than that).
- All randomizations are done using bell curve distributions, meaning that the average time interval/ore amount will be more common than an unusually high or low time interval/ore amount.
- There are now things players can do/learn to influence their mining results, but we're leaving it up to the players to discover those.
If you happen to figure out what this thing is that influences mining results, please do let us know. I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but the UOPG e-mail is down (on the receiving end only, I think). So, if you plan on e-mailing me, you can do so at thing85@aol.com. If you need to get in contact with another updater, you can probably do it in the forums unless you have their alternate e-mail address.
And now, it's time to work. Cya later. |
^ top-Morning News Part 2. [Nieves] November 14 - 7:46 AM EST | I have happy news and informative news... The informative news first. We made runebooks able to be titled in multiple languages.
Woopee! Time to celebrate! I can name my book something in Swahili!
Sadly, the titles your runebooks had prior to the patch did not convert (on Lake Superior). We're looking into the issue. The title is still on your runebooks, but it isn't displaying properly.
Revert the fucking thing.
Now, the good news. Runebooks on branch 14 published shards can be locked down in containers in your houses and recalled from (even by non-friends/co-owners/etc). This should help you runebook librarians out. :)
Woopee Part Duex. I still think the Swahili thing is better. Yeah. Sure.
Whatever.

^ top-Stealing 101 [Sinister_Saint] November 12 - 12:28 PM EST | In response to a post by Bad-Ass looking for pointers about stealing:
Well, there are a few things that you can do to make things easier. Number one is get more targets. I personally GMed using 100 targets arranged into two bags of 50. Number two, if you want to be organized get two bags, 100 dye tubs, and some dyes. Then dye 50 tubs blue and 50 tubs red, and then dye a bag blue and a bag red. Place the tubs in the appropriate bags and record macros for stealing the tubs. I made a macro for each bag that attempted to steal the tubs in order with a 12 second pause in between each attempt. It is only a 10 second wait between but if it lags up a little it screws up the macro so I make it 12 just to be sure. Make sure you eat while you work the skill and try jumping servers. I didn't work stealing in the same spot each hour. I worked it in Deluccia, Papua, Minoc and Serps hold because all of them have a stable and bank near each other. Every now and then kill yourself. I don't know if this works but hey, it doesn't really matter and sometimes dying can be fun. Go steal from someone. Using the above methods I GMed stealing in about a weeks time. Also, only steal while in powerhour as you won't gain from fails otherwise. Good luck.

^ top-In True Old School Nieves Style [Nieves] November 12 - 11:28 AM EST | Watts tells us how he gets his ass handed to him every night on DAoC.
Just to give you a clue Watts: You do suck. It has nothing to do with the Denver Broncos. Who coincidentially own Cleveland's original football team. Although I will admit today's team is just a High School Sophomore squad acting as a stand in to fill seats in a stadium that looks strangely familiar.
You can't even get your stuff from a weak ass Basilisk? Tisk Tisk! Where is your mirror man!? Where is the shield polished so bright that the bitch will kill itself after looking at it?
Are we talking about the same things here? Do you pheel me?
See what happens when you allow Redrum to "fill" your "anatomy" with things that are totally against nature?
BTW: DAoC doesn't have shards, they have servers. UO is the only MMOPG that has shards. I see you can't get UO out of your mind.
Come back Watts. UO is calling to you. And Nixie is waiting for you whenever you wish her to ravage your soul again.

^ top-Glass Blowing and Masonry [Nieves] November 12 - 7:54 AM EST | Reposted by KH, which was posted by someone else, which was authored by someone else:
Information on Stonecrafting, Glassblowing, and more Talanithus made an excellent post regarding the new craftables on the UO.com boards: Hold onto your hats, everyone, this is going to stoke your house decorating fires. After the defeat of Exodus' power generator last night, the Gargoyle city was freed. The freed Gargoyles happened to know quite a bit about mining, stonework, and alchemy... and they were delighted to share that knowledge with their new protectors. On Gargoyle Shopkeepers we now see these new additions:
The tools do NOT stack The books are used by the following people: Mining for Quality Stone -GM Miners Find Glass-Quality Sand -GM Miners **These books allow you to find sand and stone, respectivly. **Stone comes in all different shades, just as ore does. **Stone weighs 10 stones. **Ore spots have been psuedo-randomized, so expect it to be a little difficult to find things. **Miners will continue to mine ore as they mine stones. **Sand can only be found on beaches... and takes a long time to find. **Sand weighs 1 stone and does not stack. **There appears to be roughly a 9% chance (9.04 to be more precise) to successfully dig up sand per attempt. **The distribution of sand seems to occur in 8x8 resource grids that can be emptied out ("There is no sand here to mine."). **I have seen distributions of sand ranging from 6-13 samples per resource grid area (8x8). **It would seem that the restocking follows at least a similar formula to the new mining one, seeing as how I saw restock times ranging from 10-20 minutes. To this end, I could have just been lucky or whatever when the sand respawned, and I believe that I would have to take a larger, more targeted sample size to accurately determine the respawn timer/distribution of the sand. **You can use both books on the same miner, reading the second one will not make you forget the first one.
Making Valuables with Stonecrafting -GM Carpenter **Simply use the book, and if you have GM Carpentry you will gain the ability to make stone items. **To create stone items, you must use a mallet and chisel, a new item from the Gargoyle City. **mallet and chisels do wear out, about the same ratio as a shovel. **You can select to make stone items in various shades, if you are carrying the right shades of stone on you. **To craft an item from colored granite, you will notice an arrow and selection on the bottom left of your menu. The button should say NORMAL by default. Hit that arrow to select a different style granite; EX: Valorite, Verite, etc. **Stone is mined my miners. **See the Stone Items chart below for success ratios.
Crafting Glass with Glassblowing -GM Alchemist **Simply use the book, and if you have GM Alchemy you will gain the ability to make glass items. **To create glass items, you must use a Blow pipe, a new item from the Gargoyle City. **Blow pipes do wear out, about the same ratio as a shovel. **Some items can be changed in color by using a house decoration tool. See the Alchemy Items chart for details. **Sand is mined my miners on beaches, and is hard to come by. **See the Alchemy Items chart below for success ratios. Alchemy Items, broken down Empty bottle (the ones we use for potions) 1 Sand 95% Chance Small flask (changes color and direction when turned with interior decorator) 2 Sand 95% Chance Medium flask (changes color when turned with interior decorator) 3 Sand 95% Chance Curved flask (changes color and direction when turned with interior decorator) 2 Sand 90% Chance Large flask #1 (changes color when turned with interior decorator) 4 Sand 85% Chance Large flask #2 (changes color when turned with interior decorator) 5 Sand 80% Chance Bubbling blue flask 5 Sand 80% Chance Bubbling purple flask 5 Sand 80% Chance Bubbling red flask 7 Sand 80% Chance Empty Vials (can be turned with interior decorator) 8 Sand 70% Chance Full Vials (can be turned with interior decorator) 9 Sand 70% Chance Spinning hourgalss/Gargoyle hourglass (turning it with interior decorator will stop or start the hourglass) 10 Sand 50% Chance Masonry Items, broken down **Decorations: Vase 1 Stone 95% Chance Large vase 3 Stones 95% Chance **Furniture: Stone chair 4 Stones 90% Chance Medium stone table (east)/(south) 6 Stones 70% Chance Large stone table (east)/(south) 9 Stones 50% Chance **Statues: Small statue (south) 3 Stones 80% Chance Small statue (north) 3 Stones 80% Chance Small statue (east) 3 Stones 80% Chance Pegasus statue 4 Stones 60% Chance

^ top-Need puzzle information? [Eric] November 10 - 8:36 PM EST | IanStorm has recently posted A LOT of information regarding puzzle information for the current UO scenario. I haven't tested any of it (not a big surprise there), but it looks like they have done a nice job in testing & posting results.
Again, I highly reccommend that you check this site out.
While I'm in the copy & pasting mood, here's a nice laugh for you. Apparently, someone was complaining to OSI about UO:LBR's pricing (and the fact that you need to buy a new box for each account), and this is how they replied:
Let me just add that EQ has two expansions that I know of that people need to pay for: Ruins of Kunark ($29.95) and Shadows of Luclin ($19.95). At $29.95, UO:LBR is comparable.
Are you fucking kidding me? OSI is comparing UO to Evercrack? Come on OSI, you don't need to stoop that low.

^ top-More on masonry and glassblowing. [Eric] November 10 - 8:14 PM EST | This was posted on our forums, by FrozenFire:
You need sand to blow glass. To find stone you need a book - 10K To blow glass you need another book - 10K. To get the game menu, you need a glassblowers tool (blow pipe) - 30 gold All these spawn on the Gargoyle Alchemists.
You need stone to work masonry. To mine stone you need a book - 10K To work stone you need another book - 10K To get the game menu you need masons tool (stake and mallet) - 3 gold All these spawn on the gargoyle Stone Masons.
All vendors are pretty camped atm and you may end up waiting quite a bit for them to respawn. Be fast.
Have the appropriate book in your pack and 2-click it. Then your char will have the ability to find/work stone/sand.
Mine ore and occasionally you will get stone. The stone will be the same color as the ore. At least some items made will have the color of the stone used.
Thats about it for now. Good luck.
Thanks, FrozenFire. If anyone finds any more information, be sure to let us know.

^ top-What The Fuck Happened to Slow News Day? [Nieves] November 9 - 1:49 PM EST | Welp, the CIA Agents over at The Chosen used their investigative powers to find out what the freak happened to Slow News Day.Net.
An excerpt:
Slow News Day went from rebirth to meltdown in 38 days. A lot of really bad shit went on during those 38 days. To its credit, it at least lasted longer than some of Israel's wars. Infighting amongst the updaters, fighting with devs, posting of factually incorrect stories, personal vendettas against a developer, ex-writers fighting with current writers and more. And to the ever-loving horror of Wolfpack, none of this crap had anything to do with Shadowbane. I guess some publicity moments just pass you by.
SND was a good site. I liked it. Yes, it's quality started to go down hill a bit (ok a-fucking-lot) towards the end of their reign.
When I found out the LTM donated funds were going to go to SND, something in my mind said: "wtf? that ain't right!". The right thing was for the LTM money to go to charity as intended and let someone else spend their OWN money to open a site. Hell, Ian did, and he's doing a purty good job so far (no, this isn't a Suck Ian's balls comment, it's the truth). Fuck, when I took over UOPG, it's what I had to do. Well, ok, this year, but anyway, I am getting away from my points. See what happens when I mention -his- name? Anyway...
The CIA dude had this, in closing, to say:
We need people who will call them on their bullshit and put them in their place. We got one less site to do that now.
You are right. I nominate these guys to continue to the work started by Da King of Gaming News Reporting: Lum.

^ top-Scenario Spoiler [Nieves] November 8 - 4:38 PM EST | From Prophet:
Some of the scenario takes place in Fel! Could it be? Any Catskills folks down with doing this sometimes?
From DuNoir on the Stratics tamer forum:
"Yes, yes I know that everyone already has the publish and that it'll be turned on tonight, but I couldn't wait. I made a newbie character on Sonoma and followed gates around until I found one of these mysterious new towers that the Nystul the mage was talking about.
First off, there seems to be a single NPC inside Castle British that tells you how many towers are still standing (they are Exodus' towers and they must all be destroyed). When you enter Castle British through the main gates, take a left at your first juncture and continue south until you see a big glowing tower with spikes and gems protruding from it (it's quite hard to miss it There should be an NPC out front that will tell you how many towers are remaining if you speak the trigger "news" to him/her.
The placement of the towers seems to be completely random, between both facets. In other words, roaming the lands might help you find a tower somewhere Then again, it almost might help you find some of the new gargoyles that are spawning in 2D now.
The towers themselves look like gigantic versions of the power generators, with a sparkling column that would remind most people of the "star room" effect that people put in their houses (basically a black background with interspersed diamonds, sapphires, etc.). There is a control panel on the front that you may double-click, bringing up the puzzle window... (*cues ominous clap of thunder*)
I wish I had screenshots of the puzzle window, but I don't *sighs* ... Anyway, it consists of 4 sections and the best way that I can describe it is to split the display up into a sort of table with rows and columns. The first row has 3 columns. From left to right they are: puzzle controls, puzzle, finished puzzle. There is only one column in the second "row" that has information and other controls for the puzzle. I will try and explain each section of the puzzle as best I can, but it's kinda weird... A puzzle looks vaguely like the following-
|---------------------------| |< o > |------| |- -| | |< o > |- -| | - | | |< o > | | | | | |< o > |------| |------| | |---------------------------|
I left off the second row of controls because the first row is more important to illustrate, in my opinion. The litte rows of "< o >" represent the 3 buttons for the puzzle controls. The next set of lines and bars represent the puzzle you are solving, and the last set of lines are bars shows what you should be left with when you are done solving the puzzle.
Puzzle controls : consists of a 4 rows of 3 buttons, corresponding to the 4 rows of the puzzle. The middle button is a selector for the corresponding puzzle row, and the button to the left will move the selected row up, while the button to the right will move the selected row down.
Puzzle window : consists of set of dots and bars in up to 3 different colors (red, green and blue) that must be manipulated to look like the pattern in the finished puzzle window. This next bit may sound pretty stupid and/or confusing until you actually look at the puzzle for yourself, but then again, these puzzles were quite confusing...
Ok, you have a set number of moves to finish each puzzle in, and each tower may have more than one puzzle in it. The single control "box" in the second row contains 3 buttons for working with the puzzle ("Apply", "Cancel" and "Logout") as well as 2 important pieces of information: "Crystals Locked:" and "Command Functions:" (I think those are both right). Anyway, "Crystals Locked:" stands for how many puzzle are left in the tower, because for every puzzle you solve, a power crystal appears in your pack, and every puzzle in a given tower must be solved before it will be destroyed. "Command Functions:" gives you a numerical representation of the number of moves you've used, opposed to the number of moves you're allowed for the given puzzle (like 5/6 means that you've used 5 moves out of the 6 allotted for that puzzle). When you have finished a puzzle in the given number of moves click "Apply" to destroy that current puzzle and get your crystal. Click "Cancel" to refresh the current puzzle if you've gone over your moves, or don't like how you're solving it at the moment. Click "Logout" to stop working with the puzzle completely. As far as I was able to see, these towers don't hurt you when you solve the puzzle (although you might be able to get shocked if you try and apply an incorrect puzzle, but that would just be stupid to do, so I didn't try it
The puzzles themselves consist of dots and bars, like I said, arranged in 4 rows. So... you could have 1 red dot in the first row, 1 green bar in the second row, nothing in the third row and a blue bar in the fourth row. Some of the ways that you can manipulate these puzzle still is bizarre to me, but I'll try my best Now... some things that I found out that seem to be correct:
1) 1 bar = 4 dots, which means that you technically have between 0 and 4 dots on any given line
2) Pushing the "up" button for the row, "adds" that row to the previous one
3) Pushing the "down" button for the row, "subtracts" that row from the next one (absolute value), with the result going into the next row.
4) Adding a bar to any other value (less than a bar), will swap those 2 lines. For example, if I move a red bar in row 2 up into a pair of bluw dots on row 1, then the red bar would now be on row 1 and the dots would be on row 2.
5) Adding a bar to another bar does not change positions of the elements, but it does change the color of the bar that would have been added to. For example, I have a red bar on row 1 and a blue bar on row 4. If I add the red bar to the blue bar (by moving up- yes, the puzzle wraps around itself), then the blue bar will turn green.
6) Adding elements of a different color will always produce a set of dots that has the dominant color of the 2 sets added. So if I added 2 red dots to 1 blue dot, I would get 3 red dots.
7) Subtracting elements always produces a result in the field you're going to, regardless of the values of the dots. For example, if you move a bar down into 2 dots, you will have 2 dots left over (where the other 2 dots were). Additionally, if you move a bar down into a bar, you willl be left with nothing in either row.
8) You may only move elements up or down into empty space if they are a multiple of 2. So you could move 2 dots up or down (splitting the dots into 2 rows with 1 dot each) or 1 bar up or down (splitting the bar into 2 rows with 2 dots each), but no other combination will work.
9) You may not add a smaller amount of dots to a bar, because the bar already represents a full row. So even though you can "add" a bar to a smaller set of dots (swapping the 2 rows), you cannot add a smaller set of dots to a bar.
10) Adding 2 sets of dots that will equal more than 4 will always produce a bar in the "receiving" row, with the remainder being placed in the row you started from. For example, if you add 2 dots to 3 dots, you will have a bar in the row that originally had 3 dots, and a single dot in the row that originally had 2 dots.
You kind of get a feel for colors while playing with the puzzles, but I'm still trying to get a feel for how the colors interact with each other, because sometimes it doesn't seem to make sense. I hope that this information can help those of you that are interested, and I will add more as I find out more."
Some additional comments:
Oh and the new Gargoyle Enforcers are in 2D now. And apparently they are dropping magical axes like nobody's business. [...]
AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNDDDDDDDD... The scenario part in Fel needs to be completed too. That means brave Trammies coming to Fel. Trammies = Loot right?
What happens if you don't complete this "quest"?
Will Reds be allowed to pour into the dungeons of Trammel via various portals and wreck havoc until the Trammelian (new word!) Heros save the day and beat down the Towers in Felucca?
Yeah sure. That's the only motivation I could see Trammelians having for destroying these towers. Unless you want to be the guy that can say "hey, I destroyed the towers on my shard!" If he gets some kind of reward for doing so, cool. Great. Something else to sit in front of a bank for.
If not...what's the point? Even so, I guess I could take some guildmates out and check one of these towers out.
Yeah, I guess I am in one of those moods again.
I am going to go read the dueling system again and make myself happy about UO.
BRING BACK...something.

^ top-For anyone interested in the scenario... [Eric] November 8 - 12:19 AM EST | The next publish is coming very soon...Calandryll posted the following:
Ok folks, this one is my fault. Miscommunication between myself and QA with regards to when we wanted to publish. The US shards did not get the publish. Truth is, it was better to wait to make sure everything was ok on Sonoma since technically the scenario update didn’t really even start until 7pm last night. We usually like to have a full 24 hours before moving on.
We are going to publish the nonUS shards tonight as planned and then publish the US shards tomorrow morning. Basically that means that all shards will have the scenario update active at 7pm Thursday local server time.
Again, my apologies for the delay. Nothing is wrong with the scenario and last night went without a hitch, so the publishes should occur as above barring any last minute problems.
If anyone finds anything significant in the new scenario update, be sure to let me know, and I'll post it.

Even creatures like ghosts and demons will now have their very own 2D representations, rather than being hued versions of something else.
Not enough for you? Well, how about MP3 support? We thought it was about time we dusted off all of those old MIDI music files and remixed them as high quality audio files instead. And while we were at it, the thought came to mind that we could arrange it so that if you want your own MP3 files to be playing during combat, wandering through town, or wherever, why not provide that as a feature as well?
Neh to all of you DAoC players!
Um...I am going to go away now. UO3D still sucks.
BUT...

^ top-Taimat, Grandmaster Healer [Nieves] November 7 - 1:06 PM EST | I read one of the most interesting studies on Taming on Stratics this morning. Xiombarg took the time to train his pets and get baselines and results information from Game Masters about their progress in training.
It has some seriousely interesting information for Tamers (you out there Sinister?).
Here are some excerpts:
[...]3. After training, pets can reach grandmaster skill status on the following skills only: anatomy, wrestling, tactics and resisting spells. Pets can also gain in stats associated with these skills. For example, a pet can gain intelligence by improving anatomy.
[...]4. The following skills cannot be trained, and remain at the level the pet naturally spawned with: parry, magery, evaluating intelligence and meditation. During the training, none of the pets gained any skill in parry or magery, regardless of the starting level of the skill, what the pets fought, and the spells cast by the pets. The lowest "real" magery skill of the tested pets was 29.6 (nightmare) and the highest was 99.8 (white wyrm). The lowest parry was 54.6 (nightmare) and the highest was 93.5 (nightmare). In the time it took each pet to reach grandmaster skill in anatomy, wrestling, tactics and resisting spells, none of the pets gained even .1 "real" skill in parry or magery.
[...]I know there are many tamers who rely on the "Wind test" for determining magery improvement by their pets, [...] Although I do not doubt these stories, the "Wind test" is an inaccurate measure of true magery gain. Based upon my testing, I've concluded that the only "gains" in pet magery resulted from an increase in intelligence from anatomy gains. Remember that anatomy improves intelligence, and intelligence can a significant component in magery at pre-GM levels.
[...]Mordanna: Did any OSI employee(s) confirm that your testing results are correct? Did they have any comments?
Xiombarg: Helios, a member of OSI's development team, confirmed the accuracy of my pet training tests. He (and many others at OSI) had believed that pets could be trained in magery in addition to general melee skills, and was surprised to realize that pets could not improve in magery. After I submitted my test results to him, he investigated the pet skill gain magery code and discovered that the skill gain parameters were never invoked, which was why pets were not gaining any magery. He stated, however, that he would look into revising the magery gain parameters for pets in the future.
Can you say beefier Dragons?

^ top-Mining - my favorite skill. [Eric] November 7 - 8:20 AM EST | Well, not really. Anyway, Designer Vex posted the following, about mining:
The recent changes to mining are deliberate. The changes were made along with a fix to a bug that caused many spots in Ilshenar to produce infinite amounts of bugged ore. These bugged ore pieces wouldn't increase the quantity of a stack when added to a stack, and wouldn't produce ingots when smelted. After discussing it with Evocare, we decided to also shake things up a bit.
The changes weren't announced by OCR because of a screwup on my part. There was a bit of confusion as to which publish the bug fix/system tweaks were going into. It ended up going into a Scenario publish when it was originally meant for Publish 14, and I failed to communicate properly with Cynthe and crew about the timing of the change.
Here is what changed:
1> Ore zone restock times are now random, where they used to restock on a set interval simultaneously across the entire server. The average restock time is shorter by approximately two minutes than the old fixed interval.
2> The amount of ore stocked in a zone is now randomized. The minimum amount is higher than it used to be.
3> Ore zones can now change color. The color distribution is unchanged. A zone only has a chance to change color if it's mined. We set the odds of a zone changing color to a very low number. Basically, if a particular zone is mined every minute the server is up day after day, then on average it will change color once per month (but it could happen much sooner or much later than that).
4> All randomizations are done using bell curve distributions, meaning that the average time/amount/whatever is more likely than an unusually high or low time/amount/whatever.
5> There are now things players can do/learn to influence their mining results. That's the only hint I'm going to drop here.
Eat food maybe? If anyone actually feels like mining, and figuring out exactly what a miner can do to influence his or her mining results, let me know what you find.

^ top-GM Alchemy in 4 1/2 Hours [Nieves] November 2 - 12:20 PM EST | First the skill gain table, total resources used, and then the method involved.
------Starting Skill---Ending Skill Hour 1------30-------------76 Hour 2------76-------------89.1 Hour 3------89.1-----------93.5* Hour 4------93.5-----------97.4** Hour 5------97.4-----------GM (1/2 way through it)
Total Resources used: 36,000 Nightshade, 600 Ginsing.
Total Product made: 2 full kegs of Deadly Poison, about 60 bottles of Deadly Poison and 1/2 keg of Greater Cure.
*-I ran out of Nightshade 1/2 way through power hour, made Greater Cures until the end of power hour.
**-I only worked 1/2 hour of power hour (someone had to pick up the kids).
Note: If it wasn't for the 2 setbacks, I am sure I could've Grandmastered Alchemy in 4 power hours tops.
Method
Grab 5 Mortars, have a Grandmaster Alchemist (or one with 91+ skill) "prime" them with Deadly Poison.
In other words, your "buddy" will use each of these 5 mortars to make Deadly Poison and then give them to you.
Open up UOAssist, start recording a macro:
Dbl Click first mortar, target itself. Repeat 4 more times with the next four mortars.
Stop the macro (this is important).
Enter a 1200 milisecond delay AFTER each "target".
Lock the macro and assign a key (I used shift+F8).
Start using the skill. You WILL burn through alot of reagents. No worries because you can afford it, right? Right.
Once I reached 90.3 skill, I started successfully making Deadly Poison. Have 100 empty bottles on you. Drag them to an empty keg when your pack gets full and grab the, now, empty bottles.
This is a good method for when you can only get on an hour at a time (after preparing all your supplies of course).
Alternate Method
It is reasonable that you could Grand Master alchemy in a single day. It would involve tens of thousands of Ginsing and Nightshade, plenty of bottles, plenty of empty kegs and a lot of patience.
In this case, I would prime 5 extra mortars with Greater Cure and use those once your first power hour is up. You cannot gain on failures outside of power hour. You should be over the minimum amount of skill (65.1) to make Greater Cures at the end of that power hour (see above table). Switch to the other 5 mortars and continue training until you get to the ability to make Deadly Poison at 90.1 skill. Swith to Deadly Poison and continue on to GM.
You will wind up with alot of product (mainly Greater Cure) you can either sell or use.
Note
You will notice this pretty much follows Phazer's philosphy although, in my training, I had "primed" mortars.
Also, you will "waste" ALOT of nightshade. The reason I use Deadly Poison is because it's the hardest potion to make and I want to force a "hard" skill check every time I use the alchemy skill. You can get to the high 90s with just Greater Cure. But this is about getting there fast, not about having product.
I do not know if this "priming mortars" method is illegal. Since OSI won't answer my "hails" I can't confirm it. I assume it isn't since I am using up ALOT of resources in a resource based skill.
Look for the essay version of this post in the essay section, oh, in about a month. I plan on including screenshots then.
Special thanks to Catlyn and Nocturnal of Pacific and the Merchants of Trammel Hell, er...Brit Bank--Pacific for the reagents.
Next, Tinkering.
Enjoy.

^ top-What's new? [Eric] November 2 - 7:59 AM EST | Not too much. Check this out:
Q: Will there be new 2D art on the UO:LBR disc?
A: Yes. (see the November UOHoC chat log). However, to clear up something that might be a bit confusing in the log, currently there are no plans to *add* any "static" art to the client. Static art includes things like decorations, wall pieces, pretty much anything you can put in your backpack, pick up, etc.
Q: Will lands other than Fel, Tram and Ilsh become available when UO:LBR ships?
A: No new land areas.
Q: Will new crafting skills/craftables be incorporated?
A: Any new skills or craftables would probably not be something that you would need to buy a new retail box to have access to. To clarify, I am not saying if there are or are not new skills or craftables being developed.
Sounds like we're getting 30 new monsters, access to Ilshenar with the 2D client...and that seems to be what UO:LBR is going to be about.

^ top-Moving it.... [Nieves] November 1 - 10:29 PM EST | The Menu Bar above has the new UO Trade Floor link (upper right). Also, if you can't already tell, I removed the UOPG Store logo and moved it to the menu bar as well (upper left). You can stop cursing at me Watts.
I changed the DNS to the new server.
With God's Grace it will come up just fine on the new server. If you have any problems visiting the site, email me and I will get on it asap.
The new layout template file is set up and in the right place (thanks Warlord) so I can start porting information to it. I updated the Mages Creation section with the latest information I can find.
If it's off or just plain out wrong, email me and I will fix/add to it.
I GMed Alchemy on a character on Pacific. It took me roughly 4 1/2 power hours. I will work on an update for that and get that posted here. I was surprised at how easy that was.

^ top-The UO TradeFloor is Now Open For Business. [Nieves] November 1 - 1:04 PM EST | With Tradespot going kaploeey and UOBuy going bubye this month, Silk created a Forum for your UO Trading.
The boards are seperated by shards to make it easy for you.
Caveat Emptor
UOPG nor Black Dagger are not responsible if you are scammed or cheated. Any deals you make are at your own risk.
Also, if you think about scamming or cheating someone, realize that if you are caught you could find your account banned.
How to get set up
If you have a login ID and password for Black Dagger's boards, you are set.
Tips
Selling: State what you are selling, what price you are selling the item for ("Make an offer" don't cut it), and how you can be contacted. Black Dagger's U2U system is perfect for these types of deals. No more having to mess with ICQ or Email or what have you.
Buying: State what you are buying and give an idea what you are willing to pay for. Those people that have what the buyer wants can just contact the buyer via U2U.
Posting
Absolutely no rants, personal attacks, or spam. It will be deleted on sight. This is a Trading Board, not a "rant" board.
Again, if you get scammed, take it up with the GMs (have names, places, items lost, character names and where this happened; screen shots wouldn't hurt either).
Welcome to UO Trading, UOPG/Blackdagger style.
I will have a link set up tonight on the site. I promise.

^ top-Tailoring Revisited... [KH] November 1 - 1:34 AM EST | [also posted in the "How Much Does That Take?" thread]
Continuing my mad rush to GM my crafting mules on various shards before GGS, I finished Tailoring last night on Pac. After following some threads in the Forum concerning how far you could go using mainly cloth instead of leather, I decided to try a few things out.
From 30 bought skill, it's entirely possible to get up to the 75 needed to make Oil Cloths using only cloth, although it's slow going from 68 to 75 making robes. Gains dropped to less than 1 point/hr, and for any skill at, say, around 70 this is not exactly what you would expect if you were making the toughest item.
Anyways, at 75 you get the blessing of Oil Cloths. 75 - 86 went by quickly (and more importantly, went by leather-free), but at 86 it was like running into a wall. Gain slowed to just over 1 point/hr again. Normally, this is the point I'd start substituting in leather items, but in the interest of testing how far Oil Cloths can take you, I kept making them. By 90, gain slowed to .6/hr, then to .3-.4/hr, and at 92.1 I finally hit a no-gain hour and decided to start adding in leather. Quite noticeably, all my gain after that point came off of leather items even though I added in Oil Cloth to my macro for a couple burst hours after. After 94, I gave up on cloth altogether.
From 92.1 to GM, I went through just under 14k in hides. Just like in Blacksmithing, making an assortment of items gave the best gain (for example, at GM my macro was making two studded legs, studded arms, then a studded tunic, all of which I was pulling gains off of).
Gathering hides is a pain in the ass, but from what I could see, there is no way in hell you are going to get to 99.6 just making Oil Cloths. About gathering hides: last time I did Tailoring, the spawn on Moonglow was absolutely crazy and I had no problems pulling in 3k+ in an hour. Nowadays, both the north cow/hind spawn and the south hind spawn are absolutely pathetic, so I headed for Delucia. Now, hypothetically, Del would be a fantastic place to gather hides. Hypothetically. Hypothetically, communism works. In reality, Del is lousy with tamers humping their white wyrms, nightmares, dragons, & packhorses around to kill cows. Now, being the lovely, sharing souls they are, Trammie tamers would NEVER abuse a spawn, up to and including sicing pets on cows you just targeted, right? Riiiiight.
Alternative spots include the area around the Minoc/Vesper moongate, and the area around the Trinsic moongate (odd spawn of packhorse-killing critters, so heads-up). Goat Valley southeast of Yew used to be a good spot, but since the orc dungeon went in, it's a little inconvenient to take a packhorse (ok if you can gate, though). A third spot I picked up on towards the end was the brown bear spawn south of the Moonglow Zoo. What's cool about this location is that unlike Del, where cows spawn on a timed basis, the bears spawn on a population basis. Basically, kill a bear, spawn a bear. You never run out. The bears go down in 3-4 hits as opposed to 1 with cows, but the constant supply more than makes up for this...
Just Carp left now. Anyone wanna give me 20k of logs?
[ Re - Eric's post below, on UO:BR... As much as I can see the necessity of charging for CDs to defray development costs, I've already paid for the Ilshenar expansion once. For my trouble, I got an unusable piece of beta-quality software. I'm a little old for dollies and action figures, so I really don't give a shit whether Todd McFarlane is involved or not. I almost (but not quite) feel badly for all the people OSI suckered into picking up extra accounts when the new housing came out. Looks like OSI found a way to tax you after all... ] |
^ top-It's great and all...but is it worth it? [Eric] November 1 - 12:05 AM EST | That is the very question you will be asking yourself once you read what Krum, Senior Programmer of OSI, has to say about UO:Lord Blackthorn's Revenge. (NOTE: If you aren't aware of this game, please do read Nieves' update below).
The retail box will include a registration code that you can use to upgrade an existing account, so you will not need to start new characters.
You will need an upgrade registration code for each account you wish to access Ilshenar with the 2D client. This means you will need to buy a seperate retail box for each account. AFAIK there are no plans to give out freebie upgrade registration codes.
Well, fuck. If there was any uncertainty that this is simply a way to make them more money, this should clear things up. I know many people who have 2,3,4 or more accounts. I'm going to assume that this new game, retail, wouldn't be any cheaper than $30.00. Does this mean that if I own 3 accounts that I wish to play on this new version, I have to pay $90.00? Yep. I find this utterly ridiculous. Making us pay for the game retail is one thing. You would think that they would offer a discounted upgrade for current account holders, but that doesn't seem to be the case. (I don't believe they have yet said anything about a discount for an upgrade or anything of this sort, so anything is still possible). BUT...making us buy MULTIPLE retail copies if we have multiple accounts? That's pushing it. You might not feel this way if you only have 1 account, but personally, I have two. I'm not about to spend 60 or more bucks just to play basically the SAME game I've been playing for the past 3 years for an additional land in 2D or some extra monsters. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. If this is OSI's way of trying to revive UO, they've gone a step too far, in my opinion. If I'm out to spend that kind of money for online gaming, I'm going to check out DAoC.
New exciting game elements - cool. Purchasing UO multiple times? Nah. Thanks for thinking of the players, OSI.
