March 2001 News:
^ top-....You mean there's more?
[Eric] March 31 - 11:47 PM EST
Yes. There is.
Let me give you an overview of what you can expect from me in the near (I use the word "near" very loosely) UOPG future:

- A screenshot contest. (with prizes)
- A Guide/Essay on PKing (an in-depth guide on how to PK successfully, and the pros and cons to being a murderer.)

Those are my two current main projects, but I'm sure there is more to come. As you may have noticed, I've been reading stories you've submitted, to find ones that I think everyone would enjoy reading...but you can read Laywer's post in the stories section for more info about that.

Even though Nieves has already given thanks to Lawyer, I'm going to also. Lawyer, amazing job. Shit, you don't even play UO anymore, which makes this 10 times more amazing. Special thanks to Warlord for his help...I really wasn't aware of his existance before UOPG's new design was being laid out, but I'm sure his contributions to the new design was much needed. And Nieves: ever since Redrum left the site, you've done an exceptional job at getting things organized, and putting UOPG into the top 5 UO websites. None of this would be possible without you. Before this gets way too long and sounds like I'm accepting a Grammy award or Nobel Prize, I'd also like to thank the rest of the UOPG staff and all of UOPG's fans - They have also been an extremely critical part to everything here.

On another note - I'd like to say "screw you" to all of the people and websites that have talked down upon UOPG and it's updaters. Screw you. (No, I'm not going to mention names or websites.)

Re-bookmark UOPG, because we're back, alive, and kicking ass.

Cya later.

- Eric

Welcome to the new Ultima Online PowerGamers! I hope you like it. Its amazing what someone with graphical talent can do to a website. Thats right people, you were saved by Warlord from Gameterror.net. He deserves a pat on the back and a fat paycheck for putting up with me and throwing some flesh on UOPG's bones. He is the man. Make sure you check out www.gameterror.net, now, and when it goes live. Besides, Watts updates there, so you can always pick on him. Mad Propz for your graphical expertise Warlord, you got talent bro. I would also like to thank Nieves for being easy, and KH for his criticism and modifications. And last but not least, I want to thank you. Your loyalty to UOPG is the whole reason behind us volunteering out time and patience to bringing you the best information possible. I hope you continue to visit UOPG, and tell your friends. In addition to what we have now, we will have brand new content up soon. Thanks guys. Damn, im starting to feel like im at the Oscars. What a shame I didnt win. =[

I would like to take this time to point out UOPG's increased interactivity with our fans. The rants and stories sections are now open to user-submitted articles. Email your rants to rants@uopowergamers.com and your stories to stories@uopowergamers.com. Various members of the UOPG team will be viewing the submissions and we will decide which ones make it to the front page. Send them in and keep them coming!

I would also like to encourage everybody to sign up for our forums and use the chatroom. I guarantee you will find friendly people, if you find them. :)
If you have any questions, or would like to talk with fellow Powergamers, the forums and chatroom is your best bet. Dont be shy, only Slinky bites.

Thanks again guys. If you have any suggestions, throw them my way: lawyer@uopowergamers.com.
Btw, your waiting on the archives until tomorrow. Whaaa... =p

^ top-Lawyer made me do it.
[Nieves] March 31 - 10:45 PM EST
Well, here we are with a new look and feel to UOPowergamers. That's twice in 6 months. I think this will be our home for awhile. I get tired of confusing Lawyer and making him nuts trying to figure out what I am saying.

Some of the links are probably broken and need testing (any volunteers?). Some of the information is probably outdated (anyone want to send in the most up to date stuff in to me?). We have plans for new sections (an actual PvP section, Dungeon guides, more PvM information along with other sections I can't think of right now), more stories, rants, and at least one weekly update by the updaters. And of course daily, relevant news. Hell, we added some new essays to the essay section. Go check them out.

HUGE props to Warlord who worked with us on the graphics and some coding errors we had. Thank yous to KH for pushing us to get shit done. All my love to Lawyer for his hard work and dedication to something he sees no pay from (yah really). If someone is out there looking for a website developer/maintainer, hire Laywer. The dude rocks.

Anyway, I am tired.

Hasta.

UPDATE: Try the Search feature. It kicks ass :)

^ top-Ultima I: Revisited
[Paladin_VT] March 30 - 10:32 PM EST
This is simply cool. A team of software developers is planning to use the Ultima I storyline combined with a true 3-D engine in a remake of this classic game.

You can read more about it here. The most amazing thing about it is that they intend to release it as freeware and the game will be enhanced to include features such as character races that were not in the original. Stay tuned, but this one looks like a wainner.

^ top-Dont you hate OT posts?
[Lawyer] March 30 - 8:53 PM EST

With the Big Three all but a distant memory now, show us how far you’ll go to be one of our Beta Testers! Mail us the CD for the MMOG you’re playing now and we’ll send you a Beta Disc for Fallen Age (no, you don't need to cancel your accounts in the other games, unless you really want to). Yes, trade in your old CD for a Beta Slot with the soon to be hottest game in town.
And, if you really want to show us how interested you are in Fallen Age, mail us your old MMOG CD with the box it came in and the game manual and we’ll not only give you a Beta Slot but a Fallen Age T-Shirt, and for the first time ever - a great looking brand new Fallen Age necklace.
Don’t be left out of the Fallen Age Beta. Remember Fallen Age will be one of, if not the only, MMOG to make it into your hands this year.
Mail all CDs and materials, along with your name and address to:
Netamin.com
PO BOX 5050
Diamond Bar, CA 91765

In addition to the slot I have plus and extra five, I have four cds sitting right beside me. I really should have six... I cant find my second AC cd and my original UO cd. Anyways, I wonder if I can snatch up four extra slots to contest off... such a shame I throw away the boxes (except for DII, I threw it behind my desk).

You would like that wouldnt you?
Click the links. They love you.

^ top-At least Grynn Agrees with me...
[Nieves] March 30 - 5:26 PM EST
Remember my little essay/rant I wrote earlier this week about pendejos in Trammel Dungeons? Well, Grynn at UOSomething seems to agree with me about it. Here is a tidbit (note-I found it in the March Archives):

Some things that bug me in UO (edited):

5. Idiots that show up where ever you are, start killing/attacking everything in sight, then yell 'CUrE ME!!1' or 'HEEL!1!'. Ummm, no. Show a little decency and good sportsmanship, I'll keep you alive. Act like a spoiled brat, have fun walking back to a healer.

Man, this site is so therapeutic. I fell sooo much better now.
One last thing that bugs me....idiots that go on and on about the leet pvp skills, who then in the same breath, say their 20 ms ping isn't the cause of their leet pvp skills. It is. Trust me.

Gotta Love Grynn. Devil Man sucks (I actually went through and read some of his posts, and man, is he a confused individual). Grynn should fire his confused ass. And, no, I am not saying this because he thinks I suck. Really.

Hasta.

^ top-See ya!
[Paladin_VT] March 30 - 1:41 PM EST
Due to circumstances detailed in other places, I have decided to resign all posts on all websites that have anything to do with UO. This includes UOPG for those of you who happen to be mentally challenged. I may occasionally submit an essay for publication, but will no longer participate in forum discussions nor post news on a regular basis. I will however retain my access to the UOPG news page, so that I can reveal any information that I feel is newsworthy.

Paladin_VT

Addendum: Since it was apparently viewed by certain of the powers that be as an inappropriate post to the CBT forums in the nes area, I will post my letter of resignation in its entirety here. It may also be found in the UOPG forum until said powers find it there:

Dez, this letter is to inform you that I no longer intend to hold any volunteer position at CBT, nor to have anything to do with it at all. When you took over, it was understood that changes would be made, and that we would be improving the site. That was over a month ago, and not one thing has been done to the main page, and the only things that have been done in the forums were done by me, acting on the belief that it is better to ask forgiveness than permission. I am unable to work in an organization that lacks direction, drive, or purpose, and so am tendering my resignation. While you appear to have a number of ideas, there has been no attempt or desire to implement anything.
I do not say this with malice or anger, it is simply a fact that no improvements have been made. I also disagree with the direction that you indicated you wished to go with CBT. Macroing is not a sufficiently broad topic to pique the interest of a large amount of people who do not already vist the site via the attended macroing forums, and further, the audience is finite and shrinking for UO. Currently, the only purpose of the CBT site is to host the attended macroing forum, and the forums fpr UOPG. Without those two, the viability of the site would be in doubt. News is really a laughable concept because of our size as an organization. Essentially, all we are able to do is cull other news sites for available information which, to my mind, is the most useless thing we can possibly do. I no longer have the passion, time, or interest in UO or in CBT that I feel is required for me to do my best job, and I cannot do otherwise.

I truly hope that the site improves and becomes more meaningful, but I suspect that it will be closed before the year is out, perhaps with the forums maintaned as a part of the SC network, because it simply cannot fill a niche that is not already filled by SC (Rares, et. al.) or hosted sites like BlackDagger and UOPG. Those sites are what CBT could have been, only better because of the infrastructure in place, had a serious attempt been made to differentiate it six months ago. At this point, with the controversies with other sites and pointless wastes of effort caused by them, it is too late to mount a serious effort at recovery.

I appreciate the opportunity that I have had to work with some good people, Markee Dragon, Ramirez Dragon, Jugulator, and Dez, and further am glad that I was able to contribute something to the forums if nothing else. I would also like to thank the members of the CBT forums who have been supportive, argumentative, or anything else. Without the members, the site is nothing but an exercise in futility. It is time to pass the site, and UO itself really, to the new breed of UO players. I have been playing too long, it seems, to relate to their concerns or interests in the game. Good luck in all future endeavors.

^ top-The thief...From scratch.
[Galahad] March 29 - 11:35 PM EST
Everyone and their mother has talked about making a mage from the ground up. Now its my turn...KeKe

I suspect many of you have a theif. If you don't -- your missing probably the most fun class of characters to play. Don't take my word for it, just note how many thieves are ALREADY out there.

Currently I have 2 thieves on my account. One is a mage thief with hiding (I dropped EI) and the other is a disarm thief. I am going to go over how to develop the disarm thief in the fastest way possible.

My template is:

GM Stealing
GM Snooping
GM Hiding
GM Arms Lore
GM Wrestling
80 Anatomy
80 Healing
30 Magery
10 Item ID.

100 str, 100 dex, 25 int.

Now let me defend my position on a few of these stats and skills. First GM stealing is a must. I don't know what type of disarm thief YOU are trying to make, but GM stealing allows you to steal at a 100% rate on most weapons and other 10 stone items. Also you are rarely, and I mean rarely, ever detected. GM snooping goes along the same lines. This is really questionable, but I wouldn't go below 80 or your fails start accumulating. GM Hiding is also great to have so you can hide 8 tiles away from your agressor, even in their line of sight. GM Arms Lore and GM wrestling means you rarely fail at disarming your opponent. There is a chart somewhere in the Thief forum over at stratics on the exact number on different combinations but I feel both skills at GM are necessary (especially wrestling). 80 healing and 80 anatomy are solid enough to give you good heals (around an average of 50 - 60 hps) and at 100 dex and 11 second timer. 30 magery for recalling off scrolls and 10 item id so you don't have to carry around a wand...a lil' less suspicious.

Now off to the actual character creation.

Start with 50 healing and 49 hiding and 1 point in whatever you choose (for newbie items...i suggest tracking). Start off in any city. I really don't care because most of the times you can just get a gate to a city. Give your new character 10k. Go buy your skills to max and use the see-saw method to get your stats to 100 str, 100 dex (Arms Lore, Parry is what I used). Now get to Felucca Serpents Hold. This city is amazing. It has a bank, a stable, and a tailor all in 2 screens. Goto the provisioners and buy 5 pouches. Now goto the stable and buy yourself a packy. Now to the tailor and buy as many dye tubs as possible. Your probably will only get 20 or so but that is good for now. Every time you log out just keep buying them and add to the mix.

Now set yourself up a UOA macro (for the love of God get this program ASAP). Hit record and start stealing your dye tubs in your pack horse (make sure you said all guard me or you'll get guard whacked). The macro should look something like this :

Say All guard me
Use Skill / Cast Spell (stealing)
Target (target a dye tub)

But repeated a number of times. Now after the target insert a 12000 pause bc stealing takes that long to reset. Re-run this macro each time you get a gain. Everytime you log out...go buy more dye tubs and make another macro for your new dye tubs.

At some point you should have around 8 different macros and around 100 dye tubs. That is fine. Just every power hour run the macros through. If you don't get a gain on one of the macros its ok because whenever you get one gain on any tub, you can gain off any other tub again. Keep running this macro until you get to GM stealing. I don't really know how long it takes post UO:R, but its probably around 8 power hours for 50 - 100 stealing with 100 dye tubs.

So now you have 100 stealing. Great. You can't do jack with it until you get the other skills. It really doesn't matter what skills you do in whatever order. But lets do hiding and wrestling first because they are the easiest. Hiding is a simple 8 by 8 method. If you don't know 8 by 8 yet read Gator's essay. Some people say it is easier to GM hiding by using stealth but I find 8 by 8 works just find. This will take a while so don't get your hopes up. It took me a good 2 weeks to GM. Wrestling is simple...goto the BK wall in Trammel Deceit and work it 3 power hours and now your a 3 time GM. By doing wrestling you will be doing anatomy at the same time. You should get to around 80 anatomy in the same amount of time you do your wrestling, but if not hang out a while and get that 80 anatomy.

Now onto healing...You can 8 by 8 this but I suggest simply healing in normal game play. I really hate this skill. I fuckin' hate it to death for the mere fact it it easier to gain at higher levels than lower ones...well at least for me. To 8 by 8 it, have a friend go on your boat and FS himself. Heal him ... when you get a gain stop go forward 8 times etc etc etc.

So now our character is

GM Stealing
GM Wrestling
GM Hiding
80 Anatomy
80 Healing
40 Magery (hopefully you did this on your own)
10 Item Id (same)

Now onto the hell of this character. You should be on your 25th or so day working him (her). Get ready boys and girls. Arms Lore. Arguably the hardest skill in the game to raise simply because you need over 1000 targets to GM it. Yes I said 1000. I don't care where you get your items. Get them and put them somewhere. I used 200 items to get to 85 and from there on you need exponential amounts more. When you get your items (try to organize them) record some UOA macros. Since UOA can only record you targeting around 65 items, you will need at least 15 macro slots. This is the bitch part. You have to manually make these macros (SOMEONE PLZ TELL ME THERE IS AN EASIER WAY). All 1000. Put a pause of 1000 after each target. Once you get them all done (probably 3 or 4 days because of boredom factors) run the macros. If you ever come to a point where you don't gain off any of your macros, go walk around and target vendor goods. Some tips on this. You can set up vendors in your house and block them off upstairs and put 125 daggers on them and target them or you can use NPC clothes...very light and easy to get at brigand camps (Got this info from Crazy Joe...just had to credit the world's greatest thief)...Eventually you should get another gain and from there you can re-run your macros and expect a gain. Rinse and Repeat to GM.

Now snooping. Remember when you could GM snooping in one day...Well those days are gone. Long gone. The fastest way to GM this skill is to get 126 pouches (125 max to hold)...place them in each other...one in each going deeper and deeper levels...and snooping all the way through...You just have to keep doing this. When you don't get a gain going all the way through snoop every person you see and when you get a gain...go back to your bags...You'll need a friend for this and be in felucca. GMing both snooping and arms lore takes a good month, if your lucky.

So there you have it. 2 months of good game-play and you got a kickass thief. Its not the 3 day dexer but I assure you you'll have more fun with this character than with any dexer.

Lates.

^ top-So you don't like my writing...
[Nieves] March 29 - 9:05 PM EST
So? Don't read it.

Devil Man over at UOSomething seems to think I think I am God or something. Um...no, I am not. If you had a problem with my writing Devil Man, you could have been a man and wrote to me about it and we could've talked about it Macho a Macho. ::shrugs;: Whatever.

I like Grynn (owner/operator) of UOSomething. He has a cool website, was the place where I found out about the Weapon Quality affecting their damage and hit percentages. It's a good essay. Go read it (link is above; go click it you lazy terd). I am also happy he has his own Domain. I even told him so today :). Anyway, I digress.

If you don't like my shit, don't read it. I am not Redrum, nor will I ever be. I just write and let come what may. I do my best. Maybe, someday, someone will recognize how that should be enough.

Anyway, I have said my piece.

Hasta.

^ top-Fallen Age beta - 23 days and counting.
[Lawyer] March 29 - 3:26 PM EST

Fallen Age:

Science Fiction Fantasy hybrid. The game takes place at approximately 6400 A.D. - A strange new earth.

126 Unique Spells and Skills each with their own awe-inspiring 3D effects.

Three Race/Class combinations each with six sub-classes, and the opportunity to partially multi-class in the later levels.

500 levels of action-packed game play.

Several choices for consensual PvP (Player versus Player) combat.(Guild Wars, Deathmatches, PK Zones...)

In-Game Ladders and Rankings for Deathmatches.

An incredible equipment system which provides for 10,000 unique items per game world.

In-Game tracking of Mob and PKills.

A completely original and unique Colonization sub-game! A combination of Turn Based Simulation and Real Time Strategy where you build your empire, ally with friends, conquer enemy territory, manage resources, tinker with politics... become an Emperor.

In-Game property and Housing!

...and much more

I have been speaking with Savant, the producer of Fallen Age. I would say I have a 95% chance of recieving multiple slots for the beta, which I can distribute at my discretion. Aside from the complimentary and bribing slots, I will end up having at least two to contest off. I am also hoping to create a Fallen Age Powergamers, pending the success of the game - and it looks like it will be very successful. So if you are interested, the website is http://www.fallenage.com and the beta begins April 21, 2001. I am considering putting up a temporary information site, news will be posted on that later.

So if you want beta slots, keep an eye out for Fallen Age news right here at UOPG. I know some of you dont give a damn about FA, thats why I want to make a separate section and keep the posting on the news section to a minimum. Bear with me. :)

[Lawyer] March 28 - 3:47 PM EST

Details:
---------------
Name: : Win32.Winux,Linux.Winux, Win32.PEELF.2132
Aliases : W32/Lindose, ELF/Lindose, W32/Winux
Detection added : March 27, 2001
Spread Method : by infecting files under both Windows and Linux operating system
Risk : Low

Description:
---------------
W32.Winux is a non-memory resident virus. It can replicate under Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 (Win32) and Linux systems and infects PE files (Windows executable) and ELF files (Linux executable). The infection method is basic. It searches for all files located in current folder and it's parent folders and opens every file. If a target file is a PE or ELF executable the appropriate infection routine is called:

Win32 infection routine:
Infection is done by overwriting the .reloc section of PE executable. If the .reloc section size is not large enough to hold the virus body the file is not infected.

While the virus is described as a low-risk, it could have larger implications since it "represents a technology innovation that may lead to more destructive viruses in the future." (That means you dont shrug it off people, you could really get fuxx0red later)

The virus can be detected by downloading and running AVX Pro from Central Command (who discovered it). As of today, no US computers have been known to be infected yet, but we do have Europeens like Palin, so yes; it does apply. Also, it has only been found on Pentium class computers - lucky me, of course I have a pentium. At least its not the 1,697th email advertising some l33t UO cheat program which is really just BO... its a gift from the Czech Republic! Huzzah.

^ top-Training
[Ian] March 28 - 9:04 AM EST
I will be doing some training from 7pm to 8pm tonight (central time). Since about 40 of you indicated you would like some help I can't fit everyone in at one time so the first 10 people that email me today will be included tonight. I'll grab 5 people from 7-7:30 and another 5 from 7:30-8. I will do another one of these tomorrow night. If you don't get in on one of these days don't worry I'll get to you eventually. I was hoping to be able to do this individually but with the amount of people asking for help that's not going to be possible at this time.

Also if one of you Test Junkies has a house on test center and would like to co-own me so that we can place a guildstone and have a quiet place to learn, (without me having to kill pks every 2 minutes) that would make you cooler than the average cat. Email me here

The people that would like strictly individual lessons (those that stressed this in email) can get up with me at some point this weekend.

You know you want it....I am not sure I do.

The lag is horrid, the 3D client drops my con and I end up dieing. Horses look skinny. I could go on and on about the negatives. Do I have some positive comments? Sure I do.

Black Widows are some tight looking monsters. They scared the shit out of me when I saw them. Shit, all the spiders look scary. And if you think you are an elite PvMer, go in the Spider Forest and into the Spider Dungeon. Terathans, Black Widows, and Dread Spiders. Can you say "DEADLY POISON!" That's a bard's paradise. But beware, Widows are fast and we know what Avengers can do. Oh, for the record, Terathans look cooler than Ophidians in UO3D.

Drakes and Dragons are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love it. Wyverns look great with that stinger in their tail.

Oh, those Kyrins? Ugly mother fuckers. I hate 'em. They look like shit. Unicorns look great. Gargoyles look cool as hell. Ice Ogre Lords are still fat and ugly as ever...but cooler. They are squatter and have bigger teeth coming out of their mouths. C'mere Newbie, ur lunch! :)

The Rat Warriors look awesome. Reminds me of the rat pictures in my D&D books. And they crouch when they are running towards you. Nice effect.

Ethereal warriors look absolutely marvelous. Their wings flapping as they fly around is a great effect. One thing, if you tell your mare to kill it, be prepared for your mare to sit there and look at you like "Say what?" The E-Warriors like to pacify your beats (Thanks Caleb for the info.).

The Brigand Camp was cool the whole 60 seconds I was there. I hear there is a new Brigand that makes the Executioner look like a weak bitch. Um..if true, I think I will pass on fighting him.

The Gazor Town was neat. Them Gazors don't look as "cool" to me (I like the D&D Gazors; sue me, I am biased) as the ones in regular UO, but at least you can tell em apart.

Harpies look funny as hell. Ugly mean bitches. And, um, why the nipples?

The elementals look MUCH better but, the funny thing is, when they are flagged "aggressive" towards me, I can't tell 'em apart. That's one thing I hate. The bright color is ugly and hard to tell monsters apart. Let 'em flag red and I think I would've been happy.

While I am talking about hunting monsters, let me say this: If you run into a dungeon screaming "heal/cure me", I am going to let your ass die. Why? Am I there to heal your ass? No. Hmmm...I think I covered this before. Let me give you some tips without all the negative bullshit.

If you go to Deceit, have at least 70 resist. Your ass will be lit up like Christmas in New York if you don't. And you can scream all you want about "well, I do fine with 50 resist". Uh, sure, up until you get lit up by 3 liches as you auto target all 3 of them and die. "Thanks for the silver broad of power". If you have low resist, go to the Gazor spawn in Covetous 1. Gazors are great for getting you up to 70 resist. And if you do it EVERY day, it will go up faster :)

Note: This was for those people that don't have alot of friends to cast 1 million demons for you or just like hunting alone.

After the Gazors, go after Liches, Ophidians (lure them to the "hill", teleport up [you need magery for that all you warrior "purists"] in the desert and let them cast on you, just keep healing yourself and take pots), or Demons at Fire Temple or Hythloth (bring friends).

Now about this healing problem you people have. GET IT if you are a warrior. Work that mother fucker until it's above 80 and you have GM Anatomy. It's so easy it's not even funny. I got it above 81 on my "newer" warriors by healing the idiots that still believe they can get the Wall to work in Deceit. And take lots of bandages. Only time I recommend taking 500 bandages (now that they don't weigh that much).

Now, why don't you warriors carry night sight, greater cure, greater heal, total refresh, and greater strength potions? If you don't, you deserve to die. If you don't have magery or run out of regs (shame on you on both counts) the night sight is there for you. Greater Cure and Greater Heals are your FRIEND! My main PvMer doesn't have parry and does fine because she uses these two potion types. Total Refresh helps me get my stamina back if I am in a tough spot. And you NEED these in Felucca if your going to PvM there. Greater Strength are important to carry all that hard earned Trammel Loot. I carry them to help me carry the loot you leave behind.

Ok, basic equipment for a warrior that you are going to PvM with.

-15-20 Greater Heals.
-10-15 Greater Cures.
-10 Total Refresh.
-5 Night Sights.
-5 Greater Strengths.
-100 Bandages (if you take more, ur an idiot and I will thank you when I take your 500 bandages; you will be going to bank sooner than you can use up 100 bandages).
-Appropriate Weapon of Choice.
-Back up weapon of choice (when in Deceit, I carry a bow for the Poison Elementals and Silver Serpents)
-100-150 Arrows (if using a bow; if you are a "Pure Archer" boost this number to 300)
-25-50 of Each reg (I use alot of spells with my PvMer)
-Sextant (it comes in handy)
-25 Fishsteaks
A HORSE!!!! (IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE)
5 Apples (Nothing worse than getting bucked when a Poison Elemental is chasing you)
5 Trapped Pouches (Paralyze who? Just don't forget to freaking retrap them).
1 empty bag. (this is my loot bag; if I get overweight and can't run or don't have a strength potion, I drop it. Better than dieing and losing it all).

Oh yeah, armor. Let's talk about that too. Why the fuck are you wearing Plate? It's expensive and gives you -20 dex. Screw that (if your dex is less than 90, you suck anyway). Use something that gives you good AR but doesn't cut ur dex down. A Nose Helm, ringmail chest and leggings, studded gorget, gloves and sleeves with a good shield (with GM parrying) will give you -3 dex and 40 AR easy. Without the shield, it's 25AR. Not great, but not bad either. If you have a 100str/100dex warrior, wear a complete ringmail suit. It's not as bad a dex killer as chainmail is. And, if you are worried about taking hits from monsters, then use the "run through" method of scoring a hit. I do this with Liches and when I am running around with my Jacker (he swings an axe slower than a katana; but you knew that). Learn how to time your swings and you will do fine.

There is no excuse for you warriors out there who die in those dungeons. You can survive if you just keep your wits about you and carry the proper equipment.

Also, a tip for the looted weary people. Make a guild. It's not expensive. Put your characters into it. If you die, get to a town using the help feature, log out at the Inn (Delucia is my personal favorite) and log in and get to the dungeon with your other character and loot yourself. It works VERY well :)

If you aren't prepared for the inherent dangers of some dungeons (IE-Ice), stay the fuck out 'till you can handle it. Don't cry or bitch because X-Player didn't heal or cure you. That's your own fault for going there unprepared. They aren't there to help you per se. They are there to help themselves. And if you get looted, ce la vie. It's part of the game. Get mad, sure. But learn from it and realize how it happened and how to avoid it next time. And about that +25 katana of vanq you are crying about loosing. If you can't afford to lose it, don't bring it to the dungeon. Let it collect dust in your bank or house or boat. Oh, that brings up another issue.

If you got your boat keys, house keys, loose runes in your bag when hunting, you deserve to lose them all. You can make your house public. They can't be looted barring illegal bugs. If you want to keep your house locked anyway, leave the fucking keys in the bank and only have them when you are going to and from the bank. Or, even better, lock them down on your steps and release them when you need em. OR, even better than that, put a secure chest on your steps and use the key from there. If you have a boat, dock that mother fucker or leave that key in the bank too. Nah, fuck it, dock it. No sense leaving it on the sea. And why don't you use Rune Books? You can't lose em. And it's easier than carrying 16 runes. And put some recalls in it :p You can get home that way if nothing else.

Now, I know some of you knuckle heads out there are going to do your own thing or ignore what I tell you. Heck, alot of you might not ever see this update. That's ok, I will be the one in Brit selling your shit.

What do you think?

Hasta

Dateline--Uganda

Verifying a widely held belief about discount store employees, Redrum, once the proprieter of UOPG, was revealed today to be an escaped chimpanzee from Uganda named Bofo.

Bofo apparently learned to type by watching primate researchers and was able to book a flight for his "pet" monkey from Uganda to Hartsfield International Airport and was able to escape from the airport when someone identified only as "some weird guy" opened the monkey cage with monkeying around on his mind.

Bofo immediately fled the scene and has been a valued discount store employee ever since. "I couldn't really tell any difference between him and the rest of the employees, except for that banana thing," said Bofo's current employer.

INS officials can't figure out what to do with Bofo, since he's not technically an illegal alien and, since he's on an endangered species list, they can't just shoot him like they want to. Bofo remains free on his own recognizance because, as one INS official put it, "Who'd want to screw with a monkey?"

I have two issues to adress. The first concerns the website and the second... well... .

As you could tell by my random forum posts and the crude flash animation on the top left of the index page, the new version of UOPG was projected to go live on April 1st. Have no fear, we are not OSI here at UOpowergamers - and this Vet Rewards. You will get your enhanced UOPG chock full of nuts... err... content on April first. Once the new site goes live we will be in the process of updating and adding completely new content, and an exciting feature or two. For you nonbelievers out there, UOPG is not dead, and will not be until UO closes it's doors. I guaruntee you. Until April 1st, I encourage you all register your very own yourname@uopowergamers.com email address and post in the forums. If you have any questions, they will be answered there. Also, if you did not know, it is possible to change your password from the one you recieved during registration and have your computer store your user/pass for one year (try clicking on profiles and preferences) - I know a few of you werent aware of this.

The second thing is completely off topic of Ultima Online if you havent figured it out already. I recieved a T-Shirt in the mail today. Go me. The funny thing is that I was not expecting clothing via mail, especially free clothing. After I check it for ticking sounds or bucktooth redneck women, I open the package with haste. What did I find? My very own Fallen Age T-Shirt. Unfortunately it doesnt confirm my acceptance into beta, but its a damned good start. The shirt was sent to everyone who had registered in the forum before March 24, 2001. Thankfully I was one of the first ones there bitching. I just had to point this out because you know, I feel l33t and all... and I dont recall any other company doing this. Kudos to Savant.

Hi, In short I'm glad you all enjoyed the essay. I've recieved alot of response and requests for pvp training. I will get back with you to let you know a time I will be available to help you.

If you got the above in your email bag that means that I will get back with you most likely tomorrow or the day after. I am going to shoot for a Wednesday and thursday night session. Quite a few people took me up on my offer to train so I want to break the session up into 2 groups. (training large groups at the same time in UO is.. a bad idea.)

As of late I've been owning more ass than White Folx the Pimp, since everything else in UO serves only to bore me. This site has a lot of information up about how to gm a character into an mmog version of an unstoppable tank pixel anhialating machine. But... even though you might have a badass character, if you don't know how to use it. What good will it do you? This is it. The end all be all pvp lesson. Let me be honest. I don't know the fastest way to gm eval, nor how to raise resist to 100 in a matter of 3 days. In fact, I don't pay for any of the 6 accounts I currently play. But when it comes to knowing what to do with the characters I do play, I have no competition. No, as much as you sitting there in your chair stuffing your fat ass with twinkies, like to think you can beat me, you can't. Period. I don't care if you are a mage, a med warrior, or an 3llt3 UO:R axer, I can kill you. That being said, Let's get a few things out of the way. If you care nothing for pvp, you should still read this article, you might get interested in something besides hammering a mountain 2000 times to get 10 valorite ore.

PvP is optional now with the advent of Trammell so it's no longer a necessity to learn, but I urge you to anyway. There is far less traffic in the dungeons in Felucca so you could have all that ph4t l3wt for yourself if you care to learn so you won't be so scared of the inferior *character wise* oh so dreaded "pk". Ok now, before I continue any further it's only prudent for me to tell you that if you're on dial up, your a hopeless cause. Take a step into the 21st century and get a broadband connection. Even if you don't pvp, it will help you not lag die to an Ettin. "But Ian, I live in BFE, I can't get a broadband connection." Cry me 2 tears in a bucket, it's not my fault your Uncle’s brother married your mom and your town's clock is still a sundial. You deserve to die. Moving on, get a connection because it's 100% of pvp, that is to say if you don't have a high speed conect, you will die to me 100% of the time. Now, after you get a decent connection, pvp is 100% how calm you stay when you employ the tactics I'm going to teach you. Grab a nice cup of Jo or whatever it is you would like and pull up a chair. You're done dying, you're through taking shit from Shr3dda dA k1llah, you are my student.

I mentioned in my opening statement that pvp is all about how you maintain your composure in a fight. Simply put, if you're nervous, or overexcited you tend to make mistakes. You must have the confidence to KNOW you're going to win. Even my bard is on a chaos stone, My main is factions, and all my other characters are chaos/order so when I'm playing a character, chances are at some point while I'm playing I'm going to get attacked, unless I'm the bloodthirsty mongrel doing the attacking. Now, when I do get attacked, this is what goes through my mind, I wonder how much loot I am going to get when I kill this person or persons. I truly feel that every fight I get into I'm going to win. The fact is you have to keep a cool head, it will take a while to build your confidence up but that truly is more than half the battle.

Ok, to the meat of the lesson, I play a mage so I'm going to first teach you the finer points of mage combat in either 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 situations. I fight these all the time, I've been known to fight against greater odds but I'm writing this for your benefit, not to show you my prowess. Ok, preparation is the key, so arm yourself with all you will need. I am what is referred to as a pot whore. I carry usually 10-15 cure and gh pots at a time and usually 5 or so total refreshes. The number of these actually increases the longer I play as I'm usually looting other people's after I kill them. Also, use the skills you have, I don't care if you have hiding, use it. I have been called a newbie for everything you could imagine.. a pot newbie, ping newbie, a mage newbie, basically any word used to be put in front of newbie I've been called, but guess who much more often that not, walks away with these people's belongings. That's right :) I'm starting to accept newbie as sort of an endearing term.. don't let it bother you. In fact, if you can help it at all, don't talk shit. Notice in THIS PIC, this guy kept mouthing off, saying he couldn't die. And from what I had seen, he was right.. Crazy Dawg, (who on my shard is a guild mate and known as a good pvper, couldn't kill this guy and gave up chasing his sorry ass) so when I squared off against him I just bid my time.. I knew he couldn't help the urge to talk shit.. and guess what you're not doing when you're talking shit...that's right..not defending.. so during his.. "haha you'll never kill me newbie" spiel, I casted 4 ebolts at him.. dead. Nothing special.. 4 old school, spank your ass ebolts and he died. Lesson being talking smack should be done only after said victim is dead. Truly that's the only time you have the right. Ok, I use normal template magery, eval, resist, med, wrestling and scribe with hiding. Whatever your template is you can employ most of the same tactics.. I strongly recommend getting inscription, it absorbs a lot of melee. Ok so if you're fighting a mage here are some tips. To take off reflect I use harm.. some people use fireball some people use lightning.. I like harm. Anyway, after reflect is off start a combo with Explosion.. now if you see him do the same do this.. cancel your explosion and cast poison, as soon as you see him cast a spell after explosion release your poison on him and cast small heal.. what just happened is you interrupted his combination while in the process poisoned him and healed a good portion of the damage that was done with his explosion using minimal mana.. now stay close to your target. Now is the time to cast either react armor or protection.. if you cast ra stay close to your target so you can disrupt either his curing or heal spells when you can..if you know this person uses small heals a lot you're going to have to use poison.. if he likes to use large heals hold off on the poison until his health is low. Casting protection will help you to not get interrupted. I personally like react armor. Not to mention that if you get attacked by a second party while you are attacked and that person is a towny with a haly or an axe, you won't get insta death because of a combo and a huge melee item.

Stats and how they work. I've heard it all, some say mindblast is based on base stats and not on altered stats i.e. clumsy, feeble, and weaken. Well, it's been my experience that when you alter stats even further, mindblast deals more damage. That's all I can tell you. So, when fighting a mage cast your clumsy as soon as you get a chance.. if you don't subscribe to the stat altering theory that's fine. Cast weaken. that takes 10 hps off right off the bat. Every little bit counts in these fights. It's also 10 hps they can't heal. Also, have the str, agility, and intelligence icons up (if not already on macro) in the event that the person(s) you are fighting are smart enough to cast these on you to counteract it by casting these helpful spells on yourself. In long duels what I like to do is curse the person I'm fighting and cast bless on myself.. that's a 20 pt sway in all stats. Most smart players you come up against will always even their stats.. I do, if someone curses me, I bless myself. If someone blesses them self, I curse them. I remember a fight I got into where this guy spent the first 5 minutes cursing me and I would bless, he called me a newbie and recalled. The key is I would not just blindly mana dump on this guy, and let him rock me with 0 mana while I was cursed. I play smart, and I hope you will to.

Don’t be afraid to use ebolt. If you know someone has uneven stats, mindblast the hell out of them. But most mages have evened their stats, and that is because the people who have the balls to play a mage these days, know what they’re doing. Here are a few combos you should try out.

Combo 1. Harm until reflect is off.
Explosion
Poison
Clumsy
Mindblast 2x
E bolt to finish

Combo 2. Harm
Poison
Curse
Explosion
Poison
E bolt twice to finish to finish

Ok that is mage on mage combat. I put that first because it is the most complex to teach, and truly something that you must just experience and practice constantly to get good at. Now for mage on townies. This is probably the easiest thing to do in the world. Here is a good formula, if a townie misses, you win, if a townie hits you, you die. But basically it’s simple to never die to a townie (even the dreaded UO:R axer) If you engage a townie as a mage the FIRST thing you do is cast react armor or protection.. I always have ra on and I will cast mass protection so that I’m also protected as well. A lot of you walk around with magic reflect on and I strongly advise against this because if you come across a townie you can’t put on your ra right away, which can equal you suffering a very quick death. So with that just harm to take off there reflect (which they will usually have on unlike mages) and then cast feeblemind which is Rel Wis. Try out an mb on them.. most townies usually have unbalanced as hell stats so it rocks them.. if they have unbalanced stats just mb their ass until they’re seeing monochrome. I get bored fighting townies a lot so I like to toy with them from time to time, especially if it’s just 1 or 2 of them (react armor is that good with high inscription). I’ll cast an explosion followed by a weaken followed by a poison followed by a few lightnings.. it’s fun. But if you’re going for an out and out kill. Just Rel Wis and mindblast with poison thrown in there. Simple as pie. (note: don’t toy with axers, just kill those pussies as soon as possible.)

Ok, I don’t know much about townies but I can run up to someone and attack them with the best of anyone. I usually play a townie if God forbid I die with my mage and I need some quick revenge. I’ll log on with my axer and go take on entire guilds. It’s fun for exactly 4 minutes and 23 seconds but then I’m bored and need my mage. ( For the life of me I still can’t figure out how people have fun playing a townie in this game but for those that do.. let me tell you what makes fighting a townie tough for me.)

Townies are tough for me when they are well equipped with cure and heal pots and have good resist and balanced stats. I have only come across a few in my whole playing career that I simply can’t kill consistently. Those players are good though, they have perfected the simpleton task of playing a simple character. More power to them. Honestly I can’t tell you how to play a townie. Remember to bandage self, drink lots of pots, and make sure you surf gay porn because it is a requirement that you be homosexual to play them.

In closing, I’ll summarize my main points.

-Get a good connection, if you ping over 150 you’re in serious trouble and should look into other forms of internet service.

-Be Prepared. Don’t be in such a mad rush to kill that you forget to equip yourself with potions, regs, bandaids, TRAPPED POUCHES (this is the killer for me, when I forget something it’s this. Most of the time I have 15 trapped pouches on me and never get para’d but it’s the one time that I just died, grabbed a sac of regs and went back that I get parad and ganked) so take the extra 20 seconds and trap those pouches ;)

-Stay calm. Be confident. Play with your mind and not your fingers. There is no “skill” in pvp as it’s so often referred to as. It has to do with smarts. Just play smart and realize that there is no true “honor” in this game. The same person you let pass after they rez, 9x out of 10 is going to be the person that grabs a spear and 5 bandaids and starts trying to kill you again. You’re not in pvp to make friends with those that have the gall to be orange to you. Be friends with your guild mates, not those who choose to fight against you.

-Keep trash talking to a minimum if you can help it. I used to be the worst at this but I’ve grown out of it. I found that most of the time I died it was right after I decided to type instead of fight. Vice versa most people die to me any way, couple that with them typing instead of hitting whatever macro key they’re greater heal is, and you get a lot of dead shit talkers. Besides, it’s much more fun taunting a ghost whose only comeback is, oOooO.

I know this can’t possibly turn any of you into good pvpers but it can get you in the right frame of mind. PVP IS FUN. It’s an ongoing drama coupled with revenge and plots and chest thumping. PvPers are the biggest group of roleplayers in the game. Trust me on this. Most aren’t even smart enough to know they’re doing it. I roleplay a badass motherfucker that even the best in this game know that they are in for a fight when they encounter me. I like that. Care to join me?

For readers of this site: If any of you out there would like some pvp tutelage I will be happy to get my character out on Test Center and show you the finer points. I’m willing to take the time if you are willing to learn. Email me and hopefully I can group up some of you so we can do it at
once.

By the way. Watts not only told me that Kansas would beat my beloved Illinois team, but I believed the term he used was "They are going to stomp them a new ass." Hmm.. I won't go into our heated discussion but at the end I said UI 79 Kansas 67. The final score of that game was UI 80 Kansas 64. I am great, and I know it. Bow down.
