January 2003 News:
|
^ top-Royal Britannian Post ( Great Lakes) [LeallaRBP] January 31 - 5:34 PM EST | It seems our version is once again a problem. We will be moving our hosting over the weekend to fix the problem . In the Meantime Nieves has open up his front page for us again. So Regular UOPG readers forgive the Intrusion.
The Royal Brit news can be found Here
Thanks again Nieves!! *hugs* ( Gawd I hope Lady Nieves didn't see that!)

^ top-UOPG Publish January 31st, 2002 [Nieves] January 31 - 5:28 PM EST | Somehow, some fucking way, some pages disappeared from UOPG's server.
I put them back.
That is all.

^ top-Guest Editorial About Chopper.com Bannings [Nieves] January 31 - 3:04 PM EST | *note this e-mail address will be deleted after I send it*
OK first let me say I am a member of the AskChopper community.
This e-mail is about the recent AskChopper bannings.
I want to express my feelings and thoughts about what OSI/EA did and how people are reacting.
First of all OSI/EA, Banning people for reading a web site is fucking bull shit. You cant prove that the people that read the web site use bugs on the site or not.
Maybe people go there read the web site to learn about new bugs or scams so they can protect themselves from the scammers or bug users. Your Scam Prevention page sucks, all of them are old, and scammers don't use them anymore.
To keep up to date with the new scams, where do you go to learn how to stop from getting nailed with new scams. Ill tell you, you go to the place where they share their scams and info.
Now lets talk about bugs, WE find bugs OSI/EA doesnt find or bother looking for. Some of the users use them, while others protect themselves from them. OSI/EA finds out about 30% of their bugs by spying on the AskChopper boards. They should be hiring these people to help them, reward them for findings bugs to help UO be better.
We field test every thing for you all while your bank sitting. GM Animal lore in 2 hours on a boat , if all you tamers didnt know that you wouldnt be 120 lore bank sitting right now would you? 70% of you used the hairstyle program and now your laughing at us because we got banned.
Shame on you.
Even UOpowergamers.com hosts Dr.Twisters old site, yeah they are old bugs and they dont work. Its still a bug site, now is OSI/EA going to ban you for reading that site ? NO!
Do you think OSI/EA tells you about bugs. No! They only tell you when they fix bugs or when they are really big. Otherwise, they could care less.
They dont fix bugs they just keep adding in more bugs because they keep adding new crap into the game. If you really look at the bugs in the public section on AskChopper, they are not even bugs but Tricks and tips on how to play. There will be 10 of them type of bugs and one real bug that will get fixed within the week because OSI/EA spy's on the site.
Everyone I talk to on the site are really good people, very smart and know this game inside and out.
If I never found the site, or the boards ,I would of been scammed so many times. I learned the scams and when I saw people trying to use them I knew what was going on and saved myself a lot of money. I also saved myself from losing stuff in my house due to a bug . I think the AskChopper site is very useful Yes, some of the users use the bugs, but i feel that people that go there to learn about the bugs and scams to protect themselves from the bug users and scammers is a good thing. This site has helped me with my chars, money, common knowledge, and help me learn more about how this game works.
Now, for the people who laugh at us.
Think about this, half the stuff you know or what your friends tell you about making money, gaining skills how to do this and that is mostly from us, the people who field test for you all.
AskChopper, UOpowergamers and Stratics.
Your saying, yeah but UOpowergamers and Stratics dont have bugs on there site, and I know this but the AskChopper Skill Building board is very good (no offense nieves).
I am going to end this short because I can go on forever. Before I leave you, I would like to quote something.
You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all. - The Mentor
later
Then Unknown
Interesting that his email addy is now deleted after he sends that to me. So no chance for me to rebutt him 1 on 1. But that's ok, I can do that here. I am sure he won't mind.
Is there good information at AChopper? Yeap. Very good information. Now, let me ask this question: If wanted to know about something such as Crack Cocaine, would I go out and smoke me a 10 dollar rock so I can really know how dangerous it is and spread the gospel to my friends? Or how about shooting up some crank? I mean, I am only testing this stuff to make sure my friends don't try it. It's always better to be educated and make sure my friends REALLY know the truth about crack or crank. Or hell, you are already a fucking crack head and you want to test some new product for you and your friends to make sure this buy from this buyer is quality product and the next guy doesn't get fucked up from it.
Yeah, that makes a whole lot of fucking sense.
Oh, but wait, I am just hanging out with these drug dealers every day and all I did was carry a bag for them as a favor! And as far as testing, all I ever do is come over and we kick back and I help taste test the latest cocaine powder cooked up to make sure it's clean!
Is it the same thing? No. But the fucking principle is the same. Deal in the game, don't fault the blame. Do the crime, do the time.
No matter how honorable you feel your intentions are, there is no way you can honestly check the intent of a AC reader and/or poster.
If you want to continue to read the AC boards or share information, go for it. I mean, be MY PERSONAL guest. But, get caught, and you might get banned. It's that simple.
And, remember one thing: OSI does NOT have to let you play the game if they don't want too. It's THEIR game and you SUBSCRIBE to it. Do they sometimes ban for stupid reasons? Fuck yeah. But, and I would be willing to bet money on this, in most cases, they ban for the right reasons. And frankly, what the fuck are you crying about? Because you got busted for using exploits that OSI deemed illegal or sharing illegal types of information at Ask Chopper? It's in the fucking Terms of Service that you WILL NOT engage or perform such type of 'illegal activity'! A CONTRACT you agreed too! HELLO!
Oh, did I mention it's just a fucking game? Oh yeah, some of you said that too. "Don't get upset because we cheat or share cheating information because it's only a fucking game." Yeah, that makes sense too.
Go cry someone else a fucking river.
You people done yet?

^ top-OSI's Word On Bug Users [Nieves] January 31 - 11:53 AM EST | To add to Lealla's post earler, I submit the following.
Pay close attention:
Although the results of our anti-exploit efforts are not always publicized, you can be sure that we are consistent in our enforcement of the Terms of Service and the Rules of Conduct. When we address exploits in the game, we also do everything we can to get reliable information on who was using those exploits — and those people are then removed from the game permanently. We do have the ability to track the use of exploits, and because our goal is to ensure a quality game for all our players, we take full advantage of that ability. Also keep in mind that our records do not take into account player intent, which means that a player who tries out an exploit “just to see if it works” may well find themselves suspended.
Ultimately, the best advice is to not use exploits at all if you value your Ultima Online game account. Don't assume that we will take no action simply because you've heard of someone else using an exploit and getting away with it. If you are unsure as to whether something is considered illegal in Ultima Online, we encourage you to send us a question through our RightNow Web support database at UO.com, or page a GM in-game if it is an urgent matter.
Also remember that it is possible to be suspended for remaining in a guild that actively engages in violations of the Terms of Service Agreement or the Rules of Conduct, which includes sharing information about or abusing bugs and exploits in the game. By remaining in a group that engages in these types of activities, you subject yourself to the possibility of a group punishment.
Interesting how that works isn't it? Guilt by association. We at UOPG know exactly how that feels. Don't we Lealla?
You have been warned.

^ top-And OSI Speaks........ Finally [LeallaRBP] January 31 - 9:17 AM EST | We are aware of a method in-game that allows a character to broadcast speech over a certain distance, making it appear in the bottom-left of one’s screen similar to a system message. Some players have been calling this “the broadcast bug.” While we understand some players may be doing this without malicious intent, this is not an intended use of game mechanics, and is considered an exploit. Do NOT use this exploit, even “just to see what happens.” Even simply testing the broadcast bug is considered a major violation of the rules of Ultima Online, and those players found using this exploit can be banned.
To be clear: Any use of the broadcast bug is a very serious offense, and any player found using it may be banned.
The remainder of the article can be found @ FYI
My favorite part of the article has to be that last paragraph. /sarcasm

That means everything is gone.

^ top-AoS Item Properties Update Up [Nieves] January 29 - 6:46 PM EST | Now THIS is an update.
I am going to have to reread the whole update a couple of times to make sure I have it straight in my mind. Yes, I do have my initial impressions of the new system (mostly good, some hesitation) but I will reserve that so I can give it a proper review.
Until then, you can talk about it here.

^ top-Chopper's Response [Nieves] January 29 - 4:07 PM EST | There have been a dozen or so players (possibly more) banned recently for posting on the AskChopper boards. As I've always said, please be more careful with the information you give out and use a different dialup to access the boards than you use to play the game to improve your chances. Do not use account names or email addresses (or anything else for that matter) that links you with your UO account.
This is a risk that you take when you visit a site about exploits. We can assure you however, that your IPs and personal info will not be given out by a member of the admin team. This site has always strived to protect the privacy of any individuals that visit.
As for the article on UOPowergamers by Nieves, again I can assure you that we have given out no IP addresses to OSI nor indeed would we ever do so. I have a lot of respect for their site but expected them (especially Nieves) to be less sensationalist in their approach. After all it's not the first time bannings have occured due to exploiting. Many lost their accounts due to the hair dye program and the profile editor.
Ah well, can't have everything I guess..
Less sensationalist? Are you kidding!? This was the best story of the week! Probably of the year so far! Talk about mondo news coverage!
What? Why the face?
Hey, at least I am honest about it.
As far as how they banned, does it matter how as long it's proven? The host giving out IPs (maybe), matching names, guys giving out their characters names in the boards...either way, folks got busted.
Oh well....the year moves forward, and so shall I!

^ top-Stealing Powerscrolls in AoS [Nieves] January 29 - 11:16 AM EST | From Ianstorm:
IanStorm: What changes - if any - can we expect to the stealing skill and anything related to stealing. Any comments on Helios' statement in the recent HoC chat? Will there be stealing power scrolls?
Helios: Yes, power-scrolls for stealing will indeed be found in AOS. As for any changes to the stealing skill itself, I would say that *how* you might be stealing isn’t necessarily as crucial as *what* you might be stealing. Keep a close eye on the AOS FAQ site for details.
A close eye on the AoS FAQ site? For what? More useless (repeated) information or about things like Bagball? Yah. Sure. Anyway....
You can read the rest of the questions here.
BTW: While you are over at the Age of Shadows website, vote on what you think is cooler, item properties or combat changes. So far, Item Properties are kicking combat changes ass.
You know, I just had a thought...
Notice how OSI had a nice website for UO:LBR, and put up a new one for UO:AoS, but the UO.com site is still the same? My guess is that those actions continues to demonstrate their philosphy of adding new things for UO but not fixing the much of the old...
Wouldn't it make sense to give the UO.com website a facelift with the Age of Shadows graphics and color scheme? I mean, why wouldn't you want too? Anyway, what do I know? I just help run UOPowergamers.com...

^ top-UO Prostitute Redux [Nieves] January 28 - 9:24 PM EST | Someone emailed me an image of something going on at Ask Chopper.
Could it be true!?
Ask Chopper gets owned?
Someone confirm this please.
Edit: It's confirmed!
Just to let you know......that OSI ment what they said about unattended macroers. Not only that, but they are doing massive bans on ultima bug webpages. They are tracing IP's. Just though you'd like to know. Better stop using bugs guys, cause they are cracking down and they WILL find you, they got 3 of my real life firneds already. Not that anyone one your webpage ses game bugs, but again, just though it was news worthy.
-D
What amazes me is that people are actually surprised. They didn't think someone from OSi wouldn't have gotten a Chopper account and figured out who is who? Or maybe even forced a host to divulge IPs? No matter how it happened, I shouldn't, myself, be surprised at this happening. Eventually, perpetual cheaters get caught.
Sorry Chop, but thems the breaks.
Edit: Did Chopper see it coming? Maybe. You decide.

^ top-Sexism. [Nieves] January 27 - 6:48 PM EST | Jade sent me a link to something in her board that relates to something she read at the UO.com boards. An excerpt:
I want to be able to drag the female characters around by their hair...la
also, I think OSI should make a female character have to have GM cooking as one of their skills...la
yep, they could even make all female characters have a macro that picks up all the objects off the ground around the bank...la
also, if a female character is the co-owner of a house, they are locked into the house until the male character gives his permission to leave...la

^ top-Ack! I Am In Stat! [Nieves] January 27 - 7:06 AM EST | Well, my brilliant Factions idea turned around and kicked me in the arse today. I decided to try Fel Shame EG and had no trouble scampering all the way down there; but lo and behold, there were no doors on the EG rooms! no where to run if things got hairy, but I figured, hey, my mare can handle two dragons, she can handle two EG. And boy, was it good, I could hardly loot fast enough. I had her standing in the hallway thing and they would spawn alternately, so she was always fighting one. Resist gains were just rolling... and then the horror struck. With me in the hallway, she went partly into one room, and the two EG trapped her! I couldn't vet my mare and I did all sorts of stunts to try to get to her... but it was not to be... poor Temperance bit the dust leaving me targeted by two EG's. Luckily i managed to go out the gate to the other level and ressed Temp... and then I felt sick at the idea of trying my luck again, so I decided to take the fast way out of Shame (all kill ---> target self) and headed to Cove.
I got my rez, and to my dawning Horror, Temperance would not listen to a thing I said! I tried to lore her and I failed the lore! Thoroughly confused, I opened the skill gump and saw green numbers scrolling up my window, (-30.2) or so lost in each skill. Horrified, I jumped on Temp and hid. Then it occured to me: Faction Stat Loss. My taming is now roughly 64.9, I have no chance of controlling that mare. Then as the icing on the cake, someone ran down the screen and loaded up an Exp E-bolt combo. I recalled away as fast as I could, luckily I passed the magery skill check.
Long story short, I think my factions days are over. Now I have to banksit for 20 min just so I can re-GM my mare... arrgh!
I sure do hope that was a joke someone put up...

^ top-How Many Games Can One Play!? [Nieves] January 24 - 3:06 PM EST | How Many Games Can One Play!?
As stated, I am in the Shadowbane Beta. I made it to level 3 last night in an hour messing around with a guild mate.
Yesterday, I grabbed my old DAoC box, wiped the dust off of it, and fired it up yesterday. I got to hang out with my good ol' pal, ol' buddy Watts (THANKS DUDE!) and managed to make level 5 (almost 6 now) in 2 hours.
As you know, I am deeply involved in the NWN:UO project.
And, I still have my Ultima Online Accounts.
Oh, and you got Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft coming aboard in a couple of years.
So many games, so little time!

^ top-Go To Moonglow, Shut Down The Server [Nieves] January 24 - 12:01 PM EST | I found this on UOLS.net:
Players who approach parts of Moonglow are losing connection and unable to log back in game with that character. OSI is aware of the issue, and has asked that we avoid the area until it is fixed. This has been confirmed on Great Lakes and Lake Superior, and could possibly be affecting all shards.
Basically, what it boils down to is DO NOT GO TO MOONGLOW.
I know why it's happening: It's all those Fire Clad, White Haired, 'pure' mare riding bank sitters that are causing the crash. UO's servers finally had enough trying to handle more than ONE part (Brit Bank) of the server with that many people sitting in ONE place doing NOTHING but talking.
QUIT FUCKING BANK SITTING! Go play SimsOn or fire up AOL.

^ top-Perspectives [FrozenFire] January 23 - 12:51 PM EST | AoS is soon here and when it arrives, stat loss goes. That should make for a more interesting life in Felucca. Too bad everyone will be busily exploring Malas. With 3 facets using the Trammel ruleset I think the old way to view PK:ing - wolves and lambs - is useless. Since the lambs can choose between Trammel, Ilshenar or Malas, PK:ing in Felucca will be a dog eat dog thing.
So those of you that long for the freedoms of old (and the abundance of easy prey), forget it AoS is nothing for you. PKing is going be largely over bragging rights with few easy kills (with the possible exception at the champion spawns). But most of you already realized this, and from what I can see, a lot of pvp:ers are now eagerly anticipating the next PvP friendly game; Shadowbane.
Since its due in a couple of months, I decided to to see what all the fuss was about. |
^ top-Bag Ball [Nieves] January 22 - 7:10 PM EST | AoS has arenas. Great. Wonderful. A PvP arena in Malas, the new facet with the Trammel ruleset.
But, and check this out, they are pushing an in game 'game' called "Bag Ball".
Want to know more?
So, someone, please tell me, why were hours spent on putting together a piece 'touting' this in game 'game' as opposed to talking about Doom? More about Malas? More details about Combat Changes? How blacksmiths will be making their enchanted items? What 'cool' and 'neat' moves the weapons will really have? How Battle Focus will really work?
Note: My 'source' tells me he was on crack when he told me it wasn't a skill; next time I see him, I am kicking his ass...apologies to the readerbase for that--but remember something else, if he was wrong about that. Oh, while we are talking about Battle focus:
Whitefangs: "Will Battle Focus work in conjunction with Meditation? In otherwords, if I have GM in both, will I gain mana back even faster than with just GM meditation?"
Yes.
Cheers, Fertbert
120 Battle Focus Powerscroll anyone?
So, they put out roughly 21 paragraphs worth of information about THE 'game' within the game and ignore everything else that everyone has been talking about for this new release of Ultima Online. Ooh. Ahh. You got me excited. Oh wait. This is OSI's OCR team we are talking about right? I forgot. I must've been reading too much of Shadowbane's and Neverwinter Night's OCR team remarks and thought other companies had their shit straight too. OSI's OCR's priorities are different than other OCR teams...
Let me leave you with a conversation I had with a friend:
[18:57] : HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH A tennis court [18:57] Nieves: THANK YOU [18:57] : hahah [18:59] : Uo the alternate Sims online you too can play tennis
Oh yeah. Phag ball. Feel my excitement.
Note: this is not to insult the creators of the 'game' within the game or those that play it. In fact, I think it's a good thing that OSI is pushing a player created in game 'game'.
This is to merely point out that: "Does OSI REALLY think that most of the playerbase gives a fuck about this?"
Edit: OMG! I am so right on about this! Even the uo.com regulars recognize what a crock of shit this last AoS update was.
A snippet: today =(
OMG we the people have serious Questions about AOS and our skills that will become useless in AOS.I posted a few hours ago and the tread was locked and I was told they`ll be another upodate.so i foundly found that update.BAGBALL!?! Who in tha Heck cares.totally useless info...Glad yah all know how important this game is to us.Especially how important my time was raising resist 4 yrs ago,or those that have GM`d ID Item.
And greywolfe go ahead and lock it ahead of time.
And greywolf's initial response: I understand that you feel frustrated over what seems like a wasted update to you. But there are a lot of people in our worldwide community that will find this feature of Age of Shadows to be both interesting and fun. Not every player is interested in just the combat aspect of UO. There will be more updates and more information to come; please let others enjoy this information, if they feel inclined to do so.
Yes. Pink is back! I was going to be nice and color everything red this year, but damn. Anyway, I digress....
So, care to show me where Bag Ball is listed as a feature of AoS?
Oh wait, let me put it in the words of another player: How is bagball a feature of AoS? It's been around for years.
The arena, even by your site's own description of bagball, is not the ideal setting for playing the game anyway.
Owned.

ALSO! This just in! You can read Jade's thoughts here, and discuss it in UOPG's boards here.

^ top-Housing In AoS [Nieves] January 20 - 12:13 PM EST | Someone pointing out the 'flaw' in my logic about Cynthe's statement being a contradiction about the release of housing on "AoS opening day":
On the main page of Powergamers, you mention that there is a contradiction in starting housing on day one and needing a gradual placement load on the servers. The point you seem to be missing is that not everyone will have the game to place on day one. The game leaves OSI on the 11th, gets to the resellers by the 12th where it is placed on shelves or mailed to people who did mail order. In comparison with Trammel, everyone had the game and could camp out for placement to start which meant a lot of people were trying to get on or stay on at the same time. This potentially will not be the case due to variations in when everyone will get the game, load it up on their computers, and time to explore for your optimum site.
Could there be similar problems in comparison to the trammel housing issues? Yes, there could. But, it seems that this method should be more gradual that the past land rush.
These are my opinions based on the information that has been presented on your site and others. But, it seems reasonable.

I hope I am wrong and SD is right.

^ top-AoS on Siege: Yes or No? [Nieves] January 18 - 8:09 AM EST | SIEGE AND AOS : Hey there - I'm sure we'll add this to a FAQ soon, but I'm running out of time to do the 50 things still left to do before the weekend, so I figured I'd just drop a quick note to let you guys know that we have come to a decision on Siege. According to Evocare, Siege will be getting everything in AoS - and Malas will have a Felucca ruleset.
-Cynthe

^ top-Eh? [Nieves] January 17 - 3:59 PM EST | Will the publish that activates house placement be active when the servers first come up from maintenance on the release day, or will it be delayed a few hours?
-Joshua Rowan
Housing will be active on day one, right after server publish, for several reasons.
One) We want everything in Age of Shadows available from day one - no waiting for features to become active. Two) House placement really does need to be gradual, or the servers will have major issues trying to process everything at once. Even if we only wait 4 or 5 hours, that will still mean a buildup of people waiting to place, with a burst as all of those people try to place simultaneously.
-Cynthe
Um, yes or no? Maybe? Cynthe, You say: "Housing will be active on day one, right after server publish...", but then you say: "House placement really does need to be gradual, or the servers will have major issues trying to process everything at once." Maybe it's my Puerto Rican brain not understanding the Ingleesh input, but I see a contradiction there...
Will I need to buy a copy of AoS for each account that I own, or can I just buy one copy for my accounts?
-Joshua
Like LBR, you will need one box copy of Age of Shadows for each account you want to upgrade, even if the accounts are played on the same computer.
Any account that you do not upgrade will still be able to play Ultima Online as before, but will not be able to use the house customization tool, own a customized house, learn the Necromancy or Chivalry skills, or access the new land of Malas.
Does that mean all the combat, item changes, insurance, item enhancement, etc. changes are available to everyone? And that the AOS box is just about Malas, the housing tool, and Necromancy and Chivalry??
Common sense tells me yes, but, well, this is OSI and they do funky things sometimes. Anyone want to clarify this!?
Maybe Joshua@Stratics can clear that up for us in a news update...
Hint.
Oh, and Joshua about my earlier question: yes, no, maybe, go away Nieves?

^ top-Forum Bickering [Nieves] January 17 - 10:09 AM EST | From a very wise woman:
[...]
And lets all try to keep these forums on a friendly level. Arguements are good and healthy, they lead to enlightenment, solutions to problems by getting both sides to see facets of the others thought process.
Bickering is a waste of energy, clouds issues and spoil your karma. If you are pissed off, let some time pass before hitting the forum so you can make and argument and not and not a emotional diatribe. You won't get what you need understood if you are too emotional to state it clearly. Try going over yours before you post. Is it full of emotionally loaded words? Could that comment be taken as an insult? then take it out, it doesn't need to be there, name calling won't make the point, its more likely to destroy any chance you have of getting your point across to your esteemed opposition. ^ top-Unattended Macroers Beware [Nieves] January 16 - 6:31 PM EST | Unattended Macroing Policy Update Jan 16 2003 5:52PM CST (GMT -06:00)
The Ultima Online policy on unattended macroing has been updated, and our Game Masters will now be taking a more active role in eliminating unattended macroing from UO. Players who are determined to be macroing in the game while not at their computers will now face an immediate suspension from the game of at least 72 hours. Of course, players with multiple offenses, including confirmed use of unapproved third party applications, may find their penalties escalated. It is our goal to provide an enjoyable and exciting co-operative gaming experience for all our users, and we feel that unattended macroing does not help us achieve this goal. For additional details regarding these account actions, and for information on the process by which we determine unattended macro users, please read our Game Master FAQ by clicking here.
Phear it.
Thanks Alexandra.
You are going to want to read the link above. Here is an excerpt:
What happens if I am caught unattended macroing? First, a GM will come to your character and check to see if you are performing an action or skill. The GMs can look at your characters scripts to see what skill you are using, or what object you are manipulating. Once a GM has determined that you are performing an action, they will appear visibly and request that you acknowledge that you are indeed at your computer. If you do not respond to the GM, s/he will send you to the "macro room." The "macro room" is a room an inn in Buccaneer’s Den where your player can be removed from the game instantly. In the room are five blue moongates for your character to leave with when you log back into the game. If you single click on one of the moongates, you will be given a location where that particular moongate exits. There is also a sign in the middle of the room to inform you as to why you were placed in the macro room. Once you have been placed in the room, the GM will again try and communicate with you while they open up your account information. The GM will make a note that you were caught macroing unattended, which character was macroing, and whether or not they emailed you. The only time we do not email players for unattended macroing is when their email address has already been proven to be invalid. The first time you are caught macroing unattended, you will be removed from the game for 48 hours and issued an email warning. The second time you are caught unattended macroing, you will be penalty boxed for 72 hours and issued an email warning. Additionally, your account will be sent to the Account Administrator for further review. The Account Administrator will review your account notes and character names to determine whether or not you should be removed from the game permanently. If you are allowed to stay, you can return to the game after your 72 hours are up. If you are allowed to return to the game and you are caught macroing unattended a third time, you will be removed from the game and your account will be closed.
Pwned.

^ top-AoS Housing Info... [Nissa] January 16 - 9:58 AM EST | Hey all, it's been a long time for me. Real life has been very busy and UO unfortunately has been put down to the bottom of the list. However, I still read the boards when I get a chance and I saw this over at the UO Boards:
Here's an update with what has been going on with regard to housing.
---
Bandwidth
I've spent the last week or so optimizing how we encode, compress, transmit, and cache custom house data. This data includes stairs, walls, and floors, but excludes interactive elements such as doors, teleporters, secures, and lockdowns. In order to provide a positive game play experience for folks, Greyburn and I have worked to make sure that the customizable housing has little-to-no noticeable impact on connections as slow as 56kbps.
With our current encoding and compression algorithms we're seeing houses compress from about 2:1 to 20:1, with large houses compressing better. An 18x18 tends to compress down to between 500 and 1300 bytes. For reference, a 56k modem can download about 5000 bytes per second.
Further more, we are caching houses that you've already downloaded, so areas that you frequent should typically require no additional custom housing downloads.
---
Quantity of lockdowns and secures
While I wish I had some details to give you all, the fact is we're still tuning these numbers. At this moment the numbers we're working on are pretty comparable to what you all are used to. Varying the number of lockdowns and secures in the world has a dramatic effect upon resource consumption, therefore we're taking our time with this tuning... we want to be 100% sure we've gotten it right.
---
Quantity of housing added with Malas
At this very moment Malas can accommodate well over 1500 houses per shard... these aren't optimally packed 7x7s we're talking about either...
Vex created and I enhanced a script which walks the map placing houses everywhere that it can. On the first pass it will try to place 18x18s. On the second pass it tries to place 14x14s. On the third pass it tries to place 10x10s. On the fourth and final pass it places 7x7s in any remaining spaces. The last time I ran this script on Malas only about one-quarter of the houses it placed were 7x7s.
We have a high degree on confidence in this script because its placement numbers correlate very well with real placement numbers... for instance this tool placed 1248 houses on the Trinsic areaserv... production shards have 1000 to 1250 houses in that same location.
Currently we're well over that goal of 1500 houses in Malas... perhaps too far... we've recently cut down on the number of places where houses can be placed, mostly preserving more space around points of interest, and leaving some room outside the city/fort walls. We are cutting back to ensure that we don't get even remotely close to running out of server capacity. We have also substantially increased the amount of RAM on each server in order to better accommodate our existing feature set, as well as the features we're adding with Age of Shadows.
I am shooting for a goal of about 2000 Malas houses per shard, but I'll only promise 1500.
---
Quantity of housing available world-wide
Here's the scoop... there should be no global housing shortage. - The total number of placed houses exceeds the number of active accounts. - More than half of the active accounts have one or more houses. - With the addition of 40000+ new houses we may reach a 75% home ownership rate.
I would wager a guess that 75% is close to the percentage of players who both have the desire to own a home, and enough gold to purchase a house placement tool.
---
To recap: - Custom houses should not noticeably increase lag for modem users, and should be completely smooth for broadband users. - Lockdown and secure counts are still being tuned. - The 1500 houses per shard we're promising aren't 7x7s packed together like sardines. - With Age of Shadows we should have enough housing for nearly everyone.
Cheers, Fertbert -------------------------
Later Fertbert answers a question about being attacked while customizing your home:
---No, you won't be attackable while editing your houses, and all occupants will be ejected and kept out of your house while you edit it. --------------------------
He then goes to answer a few more questions.
---Q: not sure if you included this or how hard it would be but how about making a feature to allow players in house edit mode to write a 'concept' of a house into a 'concept deed'
A: Mr. Tact has himself been championing such a feature... though it's unlikely that such a feature will ship with Age of Shadows. However, I too think that would be a great feature for a post-Age of Shadows publish, so I'm crossing my fingers that it will make the feature cut.
Q: well you should make sure the owner is not under attack when he initiates edit mode then or this WILL be abused in pvp be sure of it
A: We're aware of this possibility. You also have to realize that if we restrict entry into customization mode to folks who are not under attack, then attacking folks who want to customize their home becomes a grief tactic... and that's not a particularly desirable alternative. I talked to Vex about this issue the other day... we're observing how this issue plays out during the playtest.
Q: what about existing houses ? or will these changes only count on the malas server leaving the rules on the 'old' lands unchanged what concerns lockdowns ?
A: AFAIK, existing non-customizable houses aren't changing with regard to number of lockdowns.
Cheers, Fertbert |
^ top-AoS Faq [Nieves] January 13 - 8:23 PM EST | I’ve read about promotions for a Mini House collectible, a Bless Deed, and a Hooded Shroud of Shadows. Are all of these the same promotion, or are they separate?
The Mini House collectible and the Bless Deed are part of the same promotion, and will be given to all players who upgrade to Age of Shadows within the first 18 days after Age of Shadows is live on their shard.
The Hooded Shroud of Shadows is a separate promotion being run in conjunction with several notable retailers, including GameStop.com, Electronics Boutique, EB Games Online, the EA Store (store.ea.com) and Amazon.com.
Will I be able to order this from anyone who ships to areas outside the US?
Yes – Amazon.com does ship outside the United States.
Tell me more about this Hooded Shroud of Shadows! Is it only for the 3D client?
The shroud is a dark hooded ghost robe given in-game. It cannot be dyed, broken, damaged or cut, and will be blessed, which means it cannot be stolen from the top level of your backpack and will not drop into your corpse upon death. The shroud will be available for both 2D and 3D game clients.
How do I get the Hooded Shroud?
You’ll be able to get the shroud by pre-ordering Age of Shadows from GameStop.com, Electronics Boutique, EB Games Online, the EA Store (store.ea.com), or Amazon.com. Only one shroud will be given out per UO: AoS purchase.
Can I get it if I order from a retail store instead of online?
Yes! Players who buy AoS online through a participating retailer should receive an e-mail confirming the shipment of the game. This shipment confirmation e-mail will include a note with both a special Web page address and a Hooded Shroud of Shadows one-use validation code.
Players who order in person at the retail locations of these stores should be given a special sticker upon picking up a pre-ordered UO:AoS. This sticker will include a note with both a special Web page address and a Hooded Shroud of Shadows one-use validation code.
IMPORTANT: If picking up your game in person, you must make sure you receive and save this promotional sticker! Without this sticker you will not be able to receive your Hooded Shroud of Shadows – no exceptions!
How will I actually get this shroud once I pre-order and get my confirmation code?
Once you have the validation code, you’ll go to the web page address listed with the code, where you can either activate a new account or upgrade your existing account to UO:AoS status. After registering for UO:AoS, enter into the game on the specific shard and with the specific character that you wish to receive the shroud. (Note: although you will be able to exchange these shrouds between characters, they cannot be transferred across shards.) Use the Help system to page a Game Master (GM) with the phrase “Hooded Shroud of Shadows Redemption Code.” The GM will confirm your code and award you the Hooded Shroud of Shadows.
When do I have to request my Hooded Shroud?
If you have the code to get the Hooded Shroud of Shadows, you must claim your shroud prior to Monday, March 31, at 11:59pm CT, regardless of what shard or region the shroud is being claimed in. After this deadline, all Hooded Shroud of Shadows redemption codes will no longer be valid, and no further shrouds may be claimed.
How many shrouds can I get per account?
Only one shroud will be given per AoS purchase, and only one shroud will be handed out per account (so if you buy two copies of AoS in order to get two shrouds, you’ll need to be sure to collect them on two different accounts).
Can I get it on Siege Perilous?
Yes, the Mini Houses, the Bless Deeds, and the Shroud of Shadows will all be available on the Siege ruleset shards. (And before you ask -- we don’t have all the info yet on exactly what features in AoS will be implemented on the Siege shards. It’s in heavy discussion, though, and we’ll make our decisions public as soon as we can!)
So about that other promotion… the website said we’d get a “Blessed Deed.” Is that the same thing as an Item Bless deed?
Yes, these are Item Bless Deeds – although they’ll work a little differently than the ones you may have seen in UO in the past. These Bless Deeds will not be transferable, and items will only stay blessed for the original character who got the deed. Once the deed has been used, it will disappear – so use it wisely!
If every character gets an Item Bless Deed, won’t that flood the market?
We don’t feel that will be the case at all! Since you can’t trade these, it won’t be possible for anyone to collect and hoard hundreds of them, and since they’re only good for the original character who receives it, it won’t be advantageous for people to create new characters on shards they don’t play to get them. A blessed item can be a fabulous thing on your main character, but it won’t do you much good on a character you don’t play.
Tell me more about these Mini Houses!
The Miniature House Collectibles will be just what they sound like – little tiny versions of UO houses! They’ll appear in the backpacks of all eligible UO:AoS characters. The styles of the Miniature House Collectible are based upon all the current “classic” style of UO houses, and the style each character gets will be random. The Miniature House Collectible is blessed, and may be locked down within one’s house or transferred between characters, if desired.
So there will be tons of Mini Houses out there in the game world after Age of Shadows?
Yes, but not all designs will be common! Think of them like trading cards. There are millions of trading cards out there in the world, but very few of the special foil-lined uber cards – and those stay extremely valuable. So while some Mini House designs will appear frequently, others will be much tougher to get. For example, a given single-room mini-house designs may appear more often that the rarer castle mini-house.
If I live in an area outside the US, can I still participate in getting this Bless Deed and the Mini House collectible?
Yes! Be sure to check out the post we posted in FYI last week on this very issue at http://www.uo.com/cgi-bin/newstools.pl?Article=7049.
Will I get the Mini House and the Bless Deed, or is it one or the other? And is it per character, or per account?
You’ll receive one Mini House and one Bless Deed for each character you log into UO during this promotional period. (The promotion ends in North America on Feb. 28, 2003. For more information on promotional periods outside the US, keep checking http://www.uo.com/ageofshadows.)
Is this like the Veteran Rewards System, where my account needs to be a certain age before I’m eligible? Or is this like the Holiday gift system, where my character needs to be at least 30 days old?
Neither -- there is no account age or character age limit on these promotions. Whether you buy AoS and start a new account or whether you upgrade your current account, all of your characters, new and old, are eligible to take part in these offers throughout the promotional period.
How long will we have to get the Mini Houses and the Item Bless Deeds?
These items will only be available for a limited time on each shard! The promotional period will start on the day the shard first goes live with the new AoS code, and will continue for 18 days after that.
When will the AoS code go live? Won’t it already be live when I buy the expansion?
Before the new content in Age of Shadows can actually work, we’ll need to publish some extra code to the shards. That publish will go onto the shards as the game becomes available for purchase in each territory. In other words, the North American shards, including Siege, will get this publish once Age of Shadows has hit the shelves in North America and Canada. The European shards will get this publish later to coincide with the European AoS release date. The Asian shards (including Oceania, which is considered to be part of the South Asia-Pacific territory) will get this publish to coincide with their release dates as well.
Any news on the exact release dates for different territories?
Our current estimates have all of the territories getting Age of Shadows within the month of February. But there are still a few issues to finish working out, so keep an eye on http://www.uo.com/ageofshadows for the definite dates!
Okay, now for the big question – what about housing space in Malas? When will that be opened to new houses?
Be sure to read the question above about the AoS code going live! Part of the publish with Age of Shadows will be to added the ability for AoS users to enter and place a house in Malas. Once the publish is live on your particular shard, houses will be able to be placed in Malas – provided you have an AoS upgraded account.
So if I pre-order the game and have it shipped to me, does that mean I may not be able to get into Malas and place a house right away?
Yes, that’s possible, but we really don’t think this will be a problem, for several reasons.
One – There’s a LOT of housing space in Malas. Really. Two – Many people will be pre-ordering (our numbers are high already). You will by no means be the only one who’s waiting for a shipment after the first day. Three - February 11th is the day that it ships from EA, meaning that many retailers won’t have it on their shelves until the 12th anyway. Four – One house per account means that people won’t be snapping up new housing spots unless they’re either homeless or willing to give up a pre-existing house, which means new space will be opening up elsewhere as well. Five – Phase 3 of the Housing Decay changes should be active soon, which (in case you haven’t read about it) means that houses on inactive accounts will be decaying as well, opening up quite a few housing spots as well in the current lands. Six – There’s a LOT of housing space in Malas! :)

^ top-Why no Teleport or Invis Items in Game? [Nieves] January 13 - 12:07 PM EST | Those magical effects replaced skills. It's not something I've been fond of, since the first day I started playing the game. There's more variety in the new magic system than before, so we felt we could remove them.
- Hanse UO Live Designer
Well, I for one loved those items. They made the game more interesting. But, if you are leaving them in under the new 'item properties system' then maybe it will be ok.
Personally, I would've left them in treasure chests. Why you ask? Because, finding them as loot was a GOOD thing. And allowing us to craft them is a bonus.
But, what do I know? I just play the fucking game.
On another, but closely related topic. Did you know there are crafting systems in Neverwinter Nights? Yep. Systems that were created by PLAYERS. And, these items are imbued with special properties (bonuses to strength, intelligence, protections against elemental types of damage, bonuses to damage, etc.) by high level crafters. Heck you can even make MAGIC WEAPONS AND ARMOR!!!!
Dark Sun Online, Luci's Online, and our very own NWN:UO has their own modified crafting systems in place with very neat items.
Dark Sun Online is a server based on the old DS:Online server on TEN a few years ago. I am told it's pretty true to the original. I like the world because it's 'hard core' (no not the hard core ruleset; go, you will see what I mean). Open PvP in most areas and it's freaking HARD to make a living at first. And the immunities are minimal. When you go out in the wild, you never know if you are going to get eaten by a big ass Giant, or a Defiler (evil Sorcerer) that's having a bad day. Athas, the world Dark Sun's setting is set in a dark and dieing world. The Defilers of old have raped the vegetation (they suck their magical powers from living things) and have left the world dieing. Preservers attempt to keep the world alive by only taking the magic they need and encourage the growth of the plants. The Defilers continue to rape the world's vegetation and life for their evil plans. In the middle are the Psionicists and their weird mind powers. All characters start at 3rd level (the opening sequence is cool; talk to the Guard Captain after the sequence is done to get your two levels).
The world's creators and admins favor mages and sorcerers on this world. And most of the top PvPers are either Melee/Thief (or Mage) Hybrids or mages/sorcerers. Only issue I differ with them on is they feel summoning 'pets' is 'acceptable' in duels. It gives me that UO Tamer feeling when I run into a mage and his summon. Of course, killing the Summoner dispels the pet...
Another thing I do like is the quests force you to learn the layout of the lands since some of them take you all over the starting city of Tyr, the other town Alturak, an Oasis, and the face of Athas itself.
DSO lets you make potions, magic weapons, Drake Hide armor, bandage kits, etc.
What's cool is the items are made by little items you find and/or buy and use an 'alchemist's table' or anvil to create. And you have to discover by trial and error (there are clues from some NPCS about the recipes), or you can buy or trade for these from other players! True community building.
Some tips: Do the important tasks from Thran (they are repeatable on server reset). When you get to 6th level Thran tells you to go away. From there you want to do the Elven Caravan, Cloe, and Drunken Dude quests. Be aware that those 3 quests CAN be dangerous. Do NOT attack the Cyclops on Cromlin. They are blue to you and will leave you alone. But...they will kick your ass if you aren't high enough level to take them. Also, do NOT go into Tyr unarmed. Getting guardwhacked sucks (dammit).
You have to rest at a campfire, inn, or in the Tyr Fields Fieldhouse to regenerate your hit points (outside of healing) or to log off 'safely'. I always log off at the Fieldhouse since it's free to 'sleep' there. Sleep in the left bed unless you want to keep having the same damn dream sequence...
Hit the Tyr Fields to kill of some man-eating 1/2ling bandits (did I mention 1/2 lings on this world are cannibals?) and their ilk for gold (you get gold when you kill monsters), experience, and the resources they drop. They are important for making necessary items (like bandage kits!). Regardless of the character type (hell on ANY world you play on!), put skill points (at least 20 when you get high enough) in healing. Nothing like a cheap (relatively) way to heal to help you stay alive!
Luci's is more of a PvM oriented world and it's HUGE. The areas are interesting and it's easy enough to get going there. There are plenty of quests and they are interesting. But you aren't tied to quests for character building like you are with Dark Sun Online.
Luci's has a full fledged Crafting system.
NWN:UO has an open PvP set in most areas (there are some 'nuub' areas that are safe) and difficult at first to get going. Once you get to level 6-7, you can really make things happen for yourself. It's a magic heavy world and the community is pretty tight. This world favors the meleers (because of the availability of so many magic items) but mages do well here (MUAHAHAHAHA!). Besides, I am a DM there so... :D
If you see Medor standing over your corpse, don't be mad. Just laugh and say: "good one Nieves, you got me with that finger!" and he will res you :D
NWN:UO has Gemcrafting, Armor and Weapon Crafting and bowcrafting! And more crafting elements are coming! Oh, and a tip: You can make a ton of gold with Crafting!
All 3 of the servers can be found in PW Action.

^ top-Bless Deeds Non-Transferrable [Nieves] January 3 - 7:17 AM EST | From Sakkarah of UOT:
In order to ease some of the anguish regarding item bless deeds and the early setter's program, I'd like to give a little more detail regarding these bless deeds.
These deeds are "personal bless deeds", meaning the deed will only work for the actual character that received the deed, and any item blessed using that deed will only be blessed for that character (note: this is for that particular character, items blessed by one character on your account will not be blessed for another character on your account).
Therefore, each character will be able to benefit from one blessed item from this promotion, no more. Essentially, it'll alleviate the cost of "insurance" under the new insurance system for one item. I hope this eases (somewhat?) the natural concerns over characters running around will full sets of blessed items.
Evocare Lead Designer - Ultima Online
Ok, just one per character right? How many of us have a +20 Silver Vanquishing weapon? Valorite Runic weapon? Ok, that's balancing.
Anyway, thanks for clearing it up.

^ top-Early Settler Program News [Nieves] January 2 - 3:46 PM EST | Thanks Teich for this info:
There have been some questions regarding the Early Settler Program. Here are some answers that I hope you will find helpful:
Is the deed being offered with this program a "bless" deed or a "blessed" deed?
The deed being offered is an Item Bless deed, not a "blessed deed." This incorrect verbiage will be corrected on the web page.
Um...verbage? Wonder who did the typing for "the blessed deed" in the first place... proof reading is a wonderful thing. And to think, they wouldn't hire me when I applied. Psst.
It's all good though. I am having fun as it is. Um...where was I? OH yeah....
/Edit: Well I'll be damned, Greywolfe spelled Verbiage right. That's what happens when a Puerto Rican tries to correct an English word. My bad.
Are the Item Bless deeds and collectible house models being offered in the Early Settler Program available as one per character or one per account?
The deeds and collectible house models are being issued as one per character, using a method similar to the Holiday Gift process.
Is the Early Settler Program going to be available in European markets?
The answer to this question depends on several factors. Unfortunately, I don't have the information yet. Please be aware that we're not ignoring this question--we're aware of the European players' concerns--but there is no definitive answer yet. Keep an eye out for more information on UO.com as it becomes available.
I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season! Happy New Year to all of you and yours!
-Greywolfe
Note: This is Greywolfe giving out this information, so we don't know if it's truly accurate or not. Maybe Mr. Tact will come out and verify it since we know he will give us proper information when he speaks, or, if not, correct it openly later.
Now, let's see, OSI is going to implement all these 'changes' to looting in Felucca right? OSI is going to fix Faction blessings? (Maybe?) OSI is going to make combat more interesting and 'fix' combat too?
OH sure, so you give us item insurance. Ok, that can be cool because I got to pay for it. So, there is a cost associated to it. But NOW, I can just preorder an account and get FIVE Bless deeds.
Ass.
But, PURE FUCKING MARKETING GENIUS! Why? Item Bless Deeds are one of THE most sought after items in Ultima Online. And they are super rare. Well, now, for 29.95 you can get one. Just like name changes. Or a new character they build for you...
Well, let's see. End date is February 28th. I think I can get my tax money back by the 20th. So that means, 15 Bless Deeds from OSI. Thank you OSI for saving me 45 million gold. I mean, I would've bought that expansion if it had EVERYTHING you promised anyway.
As a side note: for the overseas players/shards, you would do well to offer this to them as well. How hard would it be to open up a 30 day window prior to release for them to buy the item. It would NOT be hard to track this for those players. And they deserve the same treatment as we do here in the states.
Oh, and OSI, thank you for once again fucking up PvP Combat in UO.
Teich: I know why you sent this to me...you sick sick man. Quit fucking with my ulcer.
Edit: Thanks Lealla!

Finally, it is one deed *per account,* not per char.
MrTact
Erf. *Shakes head*. So Mr. Tact said that, and Greywolfe said the above? Who is right? Who is wrong? I won't give my opinion on this. Maybe Sunsword will come out and correct it this once and for all!? (HINT HINT HINT HINT!)
