January 2002 News:

^ top-If you play Siege... [Eric] January 31 - 2:13 PM EST | ...you might want to know about this:
Greetings,
Since I failed in my last attempt to retrieve any treasure from the dungeons of Despise, I will again be trying to uncover it's lost secrets.
I recently purchased an ancient tome containing clues to a treasure hidden within the dungeon Despise, which were I to find, would make me filthy rich. I am planning on entering Despise to search for the treasure this Friday night, Feb.1, sometime between 10:30 and 11:30pm CST. Should I become the unfortunate victim of some vile murder, my estate would be forced to offer a ransom in the sum of 100,000 gold for the return of the tome. Whomever could perform the foul deed of removing the volume from my corpse and then transport it to the appointed place and time written within, would surely receive this sum.
I will be attempting to enter Despise from outside, gating in to the Despise area somewhere near the Bossy Barn (a local landmark), and will be flagged grey. I may have an escort. Plz come and take my gold.
Keil de Graex, Imperial Guard -I-
From what I've heard, 100k on Siege is roughly 1 million gold on a regular shard. Never played Siege, probably never will.

^ top-Today Is The Last Day [Nieves] January 31 - 10:43 AM EST | I am looking for an essay detailing this scenario and the monsters that are a part of it.
You will have until the end of the month (January) to submit your entries. This will give you time to start writing your findings as well as research the scenario as time goes on. Winners will be selected by the end of the first week of February.
Some points I am looking for and that must be in your essay:
-The story behind the scenario. -Tactics: How to kill each monster and what Tactics these monsters use. -The types of loot found on each monster and what the loot does and how to "modify" them for use if need be (i.e.-Juka Long Bows). -How you would go about using the various types of loot found on these monsters (this goes for PvM -AND- PvP). -The "hunting value" of each monster. In other words, are they worth hunting or not? -Any special information you wish to add.
No duplicate entries please.
Watch your typos and grammer as I probably won't waste my time reading bad spelling and grammar* (spell checks are your friend).
Email all entries to me for UOPG's review.
The prizes are as follows:
First place: A UO:LBR Fanfest CD and a UOPG T Shirt (signed if you wish it) and permanent hosting of your essay on UOPG.
2nd place: A UOPG T Shirt (signed if you wish it) and permanent hosting of your essay on UOPG.
Good luck, and happy writing. -----
You have until midnight tonight to get your submissions in to me.
Hasta.
* Thank you for pointing my spelling error...

^ top-Sannio Speaks [Nieves] January 31 - 10:00 AM EST | 1) When will you be correcting the Multi-Objects for the new-style houses? I'm certain if you update the .mul file with corrected items, that they would function properly. For instance, the back left of the sandstone is missing its corner tiles. Because of that, you can fire in from the rear of a sandstone. The small tower, wall piece above the door, has a piece of a wall carving in it, and thusly is 1 Z higher than it should be. The villa, front left corner of the house immediately to the right (east) of the door is 1 Z too high or the floor is 1 Z too low. These really should be corrected. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sannio: Although I'm not aware of any plans to change the existing house styles, the concerns that players may have with apparant flaws in house designs are obviously going to be important to us. Hopefully you've been sharing any notes in that regard with our bug-checkers at uobugs@uo.com ;) and once those notes are in that system we can prioritize them and try to address them as appropriate.
Another one of the many things that was in my lost Nieves' Notebook Of UO Love.
This was mentioned to the development team at the UO Faire. They told us to go ahead and lockdown a bookcase or armoire in that spot until it's fixed. They did write this down and will be looking at it.
I seem to remember the comment from one of the Dev Team Members: "yeah, and a lot of PvPers live in sandstones for some reason". It might've been Evocare, Hanse, or Adrick but don't quote me since I CAN'T QUOTE FROM MY NOTEPAD!
It's ok. I am fine. Really.
Moving right along...
---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Fourth Year Veteran Rewards. The idea behind veteran rewards was to reward long-term loyalty to the game. It was touted that once completed, it would be easily expanded for additional years rewards. Obviously part of the issue is coming up with unique rewards for each year, but I think it's safe to say that these should be ready to go at the anniversary. Thus 5th year rewards should be ready by late September 2002. And 4th year rewards should be done already. Yes, there's balance issues, etc, but honestly, it's time to get moving on these. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The overall vet rewards selection system was able to get a nice overhaul, but for several months we weren't able to make significant advancement in the development of the new reward designs. There was a lot going on here in recent months, among them major projects like UO: Lord Blackthorn's Revenge and the Online Worlds Fanfest, but our schedule's cleared up a bit and I think we may have an update or two on that before too long. *crosss fingers* ;)
Even though I understand the problems of scheduling priorities, I agree. Rewards was promised years ago and should've been completed along with new rewards hitting every year on the anniversary of the game's release (just to to give it a set date to trigger a new reward's introduction).
I get a number of emails that say: "do you really think the Dev Team is going to put those ideas in that were suggested at the Faire"? All of them? No. Some of them? Yes. Am I going to give them the benefit of the doubt? Yes.
The only thing the OSI employees promised us was the following:
They would listen to us.
They would take into consideration everything we have talked to them about.
They would go back and look over all of their notes and find out what can be done and what cannot.
And, finally, that they would let us know exactly what it is they can and cannot do.
And believe me, I intend on holding on to that promise. If I can keep my word to OSI, they can do the same for me. And, even more importantly, to their subscribers.
Will I be upset if some of my favorites weren't put in? Of course. But if they introduce 10% (I would like to see 50%+) of the COOLER and more rational ideas we discussed this year, then the Faire was a success.

^ top-System Crashes. [Catlyn] January 31 - 8:04 AM EST | So, you recall into wrong, ready to beat on some creatures. You are swinging that gargoyle pickaxe for all you are worth and you pull up an Valor Ele. You toss that special fishing net from your boat. You pull back from your fight with a Titan to heal. You are watching 2 dragons go at it that you provoked when another spawns beside you. What do these events have in common?
Bad time for a system crash. UO is a large piece of software that has had many chefs stir the soup over the years. The code is long and patched together. There is bound to be some bugs.
What I hate is losing a couple hours hunting or work due to a bad timing system crash. Therefore, I rejoice when ever I hear that they have found one of these annoying cockroaches and squashed it. The following is from the FYI section of UO.com.
It looks like the underlying cause for the "sound crash" issue that some players have been experiencing since the December 21st patch may have been successfully identified. The following information was posted to the Connectivity and Tech board:
"After a great deal of investigation, we've come to the conclusion that the primary cause of the "sound crash" some players began experiencing after the December 21st patch was the result of certain hardware/software configurations corrupting the new streaming audio (MP3) data and gradually causing the system to hang.
"Thanks to a lot of help from players who were experiencing the problem, we've found a fix that has helped everyone who's tried it: Installing the Live!Ware 3.0 software that comes on the installation CDs for SB Live! cards. This software installs a variety of utilities, but the key files are UpDDrv98.exe/UpDDrv95.exe. (One user ran those by themselves and also saw the sound crashes immediately stop.)
"This software can also be downloaded from:
- Windows 95/98 (Be sure to download the complete package)
- Windows ME
"Our contact at Creative Labs' Developer support recommends that users with Windows XP/2000 use these drivers.
"If you have been experiencing this frustrating problem, please install the Live!Ware 3.0 software and let us know how it works for you."
Thanks to Tajima for the information!
So if you have been experiencing some sound related crashes, you may want to download some of those files and see if that helps you out.
Speaking of crashes, the QA testers have found another new one. This one has not made it to the production shard yet.
In our scenarios, we strive to create new and challenging creatures and encounters for our players, and the upcoming Meer Eternals should certainly be a challenge. However, our testers have found that the Meer Eternals currently have an unanticipated sooper-dooper-secret attack skill of crashing the client. Since this is a bit more of a challenge than we were originally hoping for, the current week of the scenario will be delayed by a day or two (just long enough for us to release a client patch that will put these Meer Eternals back into their place).
That makes me happy. No scratch that. That makes me estatic. Perhaps there is hope for UO yet when they start catching game stopping bugs before they even hit the shards.

^ top-New items = more eye candy? [Eric] January 30 - 7:55 PM EST | Here's what Cal posted:
Scenario 4 will have new items in it. Also, scenarios are not the only way new items will ever appear in the game. Can't say much beyond that though. :)
I will say something beyond that. I'm sure Cal's hint is somehow leading into UO:LBR. I guess they figure if they throw more items, aka eye candy, at us, we'll pay $30 or whatever the cost may be to play UO:LBR. If you ask me, I'm not sure if what I've heard about LBR so far is going to convince me to purchase it. I can do without Ilshenar and new eye candy.

^ top-Stop Talking About PvP at the UO.com Boards!! [Nieves] January 30 - 2:08 PM EST | At least not in it's own forum:
Ever since Adrick made his post asking for feedback on possible alternatives to statloss, the Development board has been completely swamped with replies and proposals on everything from removal of statloss to removal of Felucca, and everything in-between. Unfortunately, we can't go into more details with you on what we're thinking just yet, because we're really still in the "throwing ideas around" stage. As far as feedback goes, though, you guys are amazing! We have enough now that it's pretty certain we'll never get through it all, considering that well over half of the posts on the Dev Board alone are on that subject, not to mention the hundreds of mails on the issue coming to us through email lists and other sources.
So for now, we're going to ask that this topic be dropped on the Development Board while we try to archive and go through the feedback we've already gotten... simply put, we just don't have the time to digest any more right now, and it's causing all other topics to be pushed off the boards before anyone has a chance to ever see them.
What this means for now is that anyone who wants to continue their discussions on the topics of statloss, penalties for PK's, Trammelizing Felucca, Fellucca-izing Trammel, ways to enhance Felucca, risk vs. reward, incentives (and disincentives) for PKing and PvP, or anything else that falls into these lines... please take it to Discussions. We're going to go ahead and lock all threads on it in the Development forum, and continue to do so until we are at the point where we can give you better ideas of where we're going (or if we're going anywhere) on this issue. At that time, your feedback will be extremely valuable again as you either congratulate us on our proposed decision, or rip it to shreds. :)
Thanks!

Is this because there is too much information for the OSI Dev team to digest (which is what I suspect)? Or just as Cynthe said that it's pushing all the other "good" posts off the boards?
Some would venture to say they aren't interested in hearing about it anymore.
But they did say you can talk about it in the main Discussions thread...
Only one way to find out right? Right.
Either way...you have been informed.
I anxiousely await what it is they are going to do with the ideas presented and what their final PvP Proposals are going to be.
When that happens, I can then congratulate...
...or rip it apart.

^ top-How to win the server up race [FrozenFire] January 29 - 5:22 PM EST | Most of you probably already know that every time the server comes up after back up, there are certain items that spawn - and only spawn then. These items are considered rare ("daily rares" is the term most used for it) and thus fairly valuable. There are quite a few people who races to log on first and grab these items.
Most of these items can only be gotten through winning the race or buying them from other players. So all the fruit baskets, the tall candles, covered barrels, think hay and rocks, jars and what not can all be had from the game in this way, unless you part with your gold.
I was into this sort of thing a couple of years ago, but I just dont have it in me to arrange my daily schedule (especially the waking up early part) around UO in order to have a go. Ive tried it, had some fun and moved on. Remember if you dont like this sort of thing, just spend an hour or two in the dungeons and you can buy the items instead.
For those of you who like it, or would like to try, there are many things to learn. While browsing this site, I came across possibly the best essay on logging in fast Ive seen. And as a powergamer, you want to make sure you have prepared before you enter the race. There are no prizes for runner ups in the daily rares race. So go here to learn about how to be as ready as possible.
For those who dont have an idea where the items spawn, Ill give you a rough idea:
Fruit Basket - spawns in a house in the NW area of Yew (both facets). You should waned around until you see a house with a table with just one fruit basket on its N end. The corresponding spot at the S end will be empty, because thats where the fruit basket will be come server up. Just grab it, no special method is needed to get it, just speed.
Tall Candles - Spawn in Covetous level 3. Go to the inner hall with Liches. Take the W door and go N in the corridor. The room youll come up to has a table with 2 tall candles on it. Right on top of those, is where the takeable ones spawns. Spawns in both facets and no special method needed.
Jars - This one is in Occlo (hence only Felucca). Go to the first house W of the Bank. Inside there are two fireplaces. Youre interested in the one that looks like the house addons. The Jars spawn benath the owen. You cant see it, unless you move the owen. What you do is click and grab one of the owen halves (house addons are always several parts) and quickly drag it away. Repeat several times in quick succession and your client will miss updating the own graphic. Now you should see the white Jars. Now, just pick em up.
The Large Rocks spawn in Buccaneers Den, just N of the Bath House. There is a "Large Fern" says so when you click on it, under which the rocks spawns. First time you probably miss the location by a few tiles, but once you see where everyone else pops up, there should be little doubt as to its location.
There are more spots, but these are good ones to start off with. Good luck. |
^ top-Clear questions and not so clear answers. [Eric] January 29 - 8:47 AM EST | From Calandryll:
Since this will be Week 3 of the current scenario and LBR is to be released in February '02 how many weeks of this current scenario are left? --This is the last week.
Will Pre-order LBR purchasers receive their LBR CD's prior to the In-store release date? If so... will LBR be patched in to the client prior to the store release date? --No idea on the first question. Not sure I understand the second part.
I'm wondering if Calandryll actually doesn't understand the question or if he's simply avoiding answering it because there is uncertainty about what OSI plans to do for current UO subscribers. It would be nice if we (current UO subscribers) could just pay a low fee of $9.95 or so to have the option of downloading a UO:LBR upgrade (you know, for us broadband users). I really don't know if I'm going to feel like spending $80 to have both of my accounts upgraded to LBR, especially since I don't play a lot anymore. Well, once it is released, I'll be looking for some reviews to help me make my decision.
In other news, I had no idea Panasonic was manufacturing Gamecube.

^ top-Us and Them. [Gator] January 29 - 7:23 AM EST | "Us and Them And after all we're only ordinary men Me, and you God only knows it's not what we would choose to do"
Can you actually believe that a Tamer presented an arguement over the fact of Can't Tame, Can't Own. His issue was that was a way he made money with his Tamer. I mean come on really? Well duh, your a frikking Tamer!! "A Kill" for cash, and if Selling Tamed Drags is your bread and butter, then you are missing out.
Cant tame cant own would just wip out the oportunity to sell pets, so where find money??
This one is downright awesome, and I couldnt agree more. Nice one Chip of Catskills.
Last but not least… CAN’T TAME, CAN’T OWN!! Get over it! You want a dragon… bust your ass and earn it! Otherwise, you have no room to complain. A mage with 70 eval, 70 magery can’t cast earthquake. A two-day-old nerf-herder tamer baby shouldn’t be able to haul 50 dragons around Shame either! Make owning dragons mean something again. Anyone who disagrees with me, suck it up and GM your skills or quit. I don’t want to play with crybabies anyhow. You get 700 skill points to plug into your character… USE THEM or GO PLAY The Sims!
This guy is just an idiot, plain and simple. Kegraf, get a clue.
Hmmm, I think Taming should be left like it is, unless you want to make it more interesting in the 80's My reason for keeping it the same is simple.
You all are acting like Cry Babies
First you want to take away control from low level tamers, that is stupid and ridculous who are we going to sell Dragons to when we can finally tame them. If you are upset that there are to many low level tamers running around with Dragons, then fix the solution, by raising the price of a Dragon, from 9K to like 20K. People will think twice about losing a 20K Dragon, and White Wryms to 40K. I see people begging for White Wryms for free, talking about that they don't have enough money to pay for one.
Of course then the all knowing Kegraf when on to say:
The real problem lies in the fact that people think Tamers make a lot of money, which they do. The other classes in UO need monsters that will give them money like Tamers have.
HELLO DUMBASS!! The economy is totally fuXXoR3d as it is. This is a Candyland Vet at his finest...
I can sit here for the next hour hour cutting and pasting the typical moronic excuses displayed at the "Official" UO Forums. But I think you got the idea...
So whats my point?
These people make the game that you play today. Thats right, they whine and cry over there about this and that enough to where they get there way. This is the reason there is a Trammel, this is a reason there is statloss, this is the reason that Tamers AND Bards I might add travel the lands racking up enough gold to make Bill Gates jealous.
If your not going over there and stressing your opinions wether they be for or against you are wrong. Frozenfire down below couldn't have said it well enough:
I know Im always slightly pissed off when I browse the uo.com boards. Most of the posters there seem to play a different game than I do, and if OSI doesnt make an effort to check other sites, then thats all they are going to see on player feed back. Go there and wave the powergamer banner for us all.
Oaks asked at the beginning of the thread to post ideas on one item players would like to see changed with Taming. HELLO!! HE WANTS IDEAS CAUSE ITS A WELL KNOW FACT THAT ITS GOTTEN OUT OF HAND!! And what do you got? Players posting on how they want there pets colored, how they want the ability to Rez their own pets, and don't even bring up the fact of actually "training" your pets, because come hell or high water they don't want that. Heavens no, because then they would have to actually ::GULP:: Work? One post I read is how one guy has like 87 taming and he has been working on the character for a year. WTF?? If it has taken a year for you to get that, then obviously someone lied to you when they said "To GM Taming just stand at the Blood Ele spawn saying "All Kill" over and over again."
Ahh yes my fellow PowerGamers, these are the types. These are the enemy, its not OSI. OSI usually does what the players ask of them, but when you got a bunch of idiots sitting around in the UO Forum all day screaming for pixel crack... what do you get? Pixel Crack.
Its up to you to decide, let our voice be heard, go over there and post. Let them know who we are, and how pissed off we are that they have taken one of the best games ever made and drug it through a mud pit of glacial staves and Nightmares.

^ top-UO:LBR Preview at Gamespot [Fixxxer] January 28 - 11:32 PM EST | Gamespot just posted a preview for UO: LBR. Here is a cut:
This unlocking of new creatures is all part of an all-new dynamic content system. Basically, Ultima Online players will now have a hand in the way the world develops. Better yet, this time it will go beyond how many walking paths they can block with their houses. As Origin explains it, events will take place or not take place according to the way players react to in-game situations. And while these situations maybe different on every shard (server), the players' reactions and therefore the in-game results will vary from shard to shard.

^ top-Chessy Loses It... And Gets It Back Again [Nieves] January 28 - 5:15 PM EST | From Kerowyn:
Chesapeake Character Issues We solved Chesapeake's hardware issues today, but the character data was not restored correctly when the shard was brought back up, making it appear as if all characters were gone. We most definitely have backups of the characters, however, and will make a post again as soon as we have more info on when you can expect the shard back up. We're very sorry to all Chesapeake players who've been inconvenienced by this!
They are working on it folks.
I hope it gets resolved in a short amount of time. My heart goes out to all of you Chesapeake players.
UPDATE: I just got word from OSI that the players should be assured OSI has all game data saved and will have the shard up as soon as humanly possible.

^ top-Faire aftermath - what we will see this year [FrozenFire] January 28 - 1:28 PM EST | We have all read the notes from the faire. Some very good ideas have been brought up, but we wont see most of them in the next couple of patches. At the moment its just ideas and concepts, no major news were promised. Today I saw Cynthe emphasize that the idea of character transfers were just ideas, and conditioned on how it can be implemented. So dont hold your breath just yet.
Anyways, dont expect these ideas patched in right away. First off, OSI has its focus firmly on the LBR launch. After that we can be fairly certain we get more scenarios and also more BODs for Carpentry and Tailoring. After that, I think most bets are off, at least for the time being. In just a couple of weeks, OSI took in a huge chunk of player feed back at the faire. You thought they wanted to give out info to the players? Sure, but not as bad as they probably wanted a dialogue and feed back with players. I bet a lot of ideas were fielded and tested at the faire. Seeing players and listening to them makes it alot easier to get a feel for how typical they are for the player base. Written text is more bland that way. Whether we will see the cool ideas mentioned in development probably depends on how well they were received by the players, as well as how cosing intensive they turn out to be.
Two items that we know for sure are on the radar in Austin, are Tamers and PKs (or really Felucca as a whole). Since both subjects have been discussed by players everywhere (the topics seem to stay the same, its the solutions that differ). Apparantly, developers dont have their minds made up on these two subjects so they are asking players for (more) feed back.
Anyways, so what well see in the fifth year of UO depends a lot on what people say now. If you have opinions on tamers or PKs (like anyone wouldnt) be sure to let OSI know.
Tamer feed back goes here and PK feed back here as well as here.
I know Im always slightly pissed off when I browse the uo.com boards. Most of the posters there seem to play a different game than I do, and if OSI doesnt make an effort to check other sites, then thats all they are going to see on player feed back. Go there and wave the powergamer banner for us all. |
^ top-Don't get your hopes up; it was only an idea. [Eric] January 28 - 1:03 PM EST | From Cynthe, regarding switching a character to another shard as a 4th year vet. reward:
I did actually mention it, but let me clarify the context. :)
(For the record, this is one reason we try to be so careful with what we say, since the internet's way of playing "telephone" with our quotes can snowball into all sorts of things.)
We were in a Vet Rewards chat, talking about various rewards and what veterans would really find valuable that isn't game-balance altering. My thought was that since one of UO's real strengths, and the thing that in my opinion keeps a lot of people playing past their initial year or so, is its freedom of choice to play different play styles, even to the point of backing up (advancement-wise) and taking your characters in a different direction. So my question was basically whether or not we should focus on, for future vet rewards, something that increases that freedom of choice even farther, like (and I stressed here that this was only an idea, and that I didn't know if it was likely, or even possible with UO's code) the idea of allowing veteran players to switch shards.
So as for your questions, there's no answers... I would be more interested in hearing yours. :) Enough said. |
^ top-Watts Tells Why Removing Stat Loss Won't Work [Nieves] January 28 - 10:21 AM EST | No bullshit. The Terror of UO and his "I am going to kill you because you look like the kid that stole my lunch money when I was in the 5th grade" persona doesn't agree that taking stat loss out of UO will work.
Check it: That would do nothing but ensure that no one comes to Felucca for any reason. The result would be a mindless bloodbath. Sort of like the Brit Graveyard when they mirrored the shards to test the Clean Up Britannia? Remember that shit? HAHA. FUN TIMES. Only it would be nothing like that because no one would be there because they might lose precious, precious loot. So not even Faction members would be in Felucca because it would just be a blue-blocking fragfest of incoherent idiocy. Oh wait that is Factions as it is now. HAHA. Well, I was wrong. It won’t be like that, it will be WORSE. Worse than a David Hasselhoff rock concert. A gigantic clusterfuck of two-week-old lumberjacks running around calling each other newbs and twinks. Christ I shudder to even consider that massive conglomeration of retards.
You can read the rest of the article here.
Oh, and Watts? I got your fucking Mexican Burrito right here bitch.
Hasta. |
^ top-Why are you trying to attract more people to Felucca? [Eric] January 28 - 8:28 AM EST | So the PKers can have fun, of course. But let's see what Adrick thinks about that question:
Responding to your question:
"I guess my question for Adrick and others is "Why do you want me to go to Felucca?"
Given the current rules - there is no reason other than faction fighting, Khal dungeon and a prime housing spot you would want to venture there. Felucca is not for everyone, trammel isnt for everyone.
We as a team want to support as many playstyles as we can and try to give as many options as possible to enjoy the game to our players.
Non consensual pvp is a playstyle - and we support it, just as consensual pvp is a playstyle we support.
We realize there are different groups - there are the hardcore Trammel folks - love it wont ever leave it for any reason. There are the die hard Felucca folks - love it and never go to Trammel. Then there are the inbetweeners. One of the issues we are dealing with is that part of the players who play in Trammel WOULD play in Felucca if there was a reason to for them. Some do because the monsters they want to hunt are camped in Trammel and so they say ok Ill just go to Felucca. The issue with that is why would anyone who is neutral and not of the die hard type one way or the other go to Fel? Say someone is just wanting to make some gold - can make just as much in Trammel so why take the risk of running into a pk for the exact same reward? even if they dont mind pvping. When the rewards are the same and the risks are different people tend to just out of human nature take the less risky approach.
So to answer you directly - if you are a die hard Trammel player there is nothing we could do short of making the entire Felucca Facet Trammel to get you to play there - why do that when you are happy in Trammel?
Its the middle of the roaders that any possible Felucca changes would be for and as well the die hard Felucca players. However a very valid group of players have their homes in Felucca and we do not want to see people leave Fel, we want to encourage them to play there and encourage those who are nuetral to choose based on their comfort level which to play on.
Hope that helps
- Adrick
Thanks Adrick. I'm actually glad OSI is handling this Felucca issue seriously, asking for feedback and promptly responding to that feedback (OSI hasn't always done that - not well, at least).
While I am a die hard Felucca player, I couldn't really care less if OSI makes Felucca more desireable for those tending towards Trammel. Sure, it'd be nice to log on and actually SEE people at the Britain bank. Actually, I'll take that comment back. Whenever there are a lot of people at any bank, there is one of two crowds. 1. Thieves 2. "Bank-sitters"
Of course, if OSI made Felucca more desireable, the thieving profession could actually have a purpose like it did pre-UO:R. There's an upside and a downside to anything OSI does. The upside is that there would actually be some people to interact with (be it for PvM, PvP, or PK), but the downside could be that there are too many people. Bank lag, camped spawns, etc. For OSI to hit something in between those two issues would be amazing. I really doubt if there is anything to do that would make Felucca and Trammel even (as far as population goes).
While we're on the subject of ideas for UO improvement, why not see what Watts has to say about it all?
That's all for now...it's really too early for me to be typing at the computer.

^ top-Silk Speaks About Ultima-EverQuest [Nieves] January 28 - 8:24 AM EST | Silk tell us his thoughts of what UO was, what it has become, and what it should be.
A direct quote from his article:
[concerning Factions] Each territory should have controllable rules as if it were its own facet. Maybe I want Trinsic to be a free PvP area without stat loss (for everyone, not just faction members). Maybe my faction wants the bank area of the Britain to be safe from fighting...like Trammel. Giving the faction control over their territory makes having that control meaningful, fun, and intriguing. One thing to note: the rules of a territory must be clear upon entering the area.
Time permitting, I might just break down his write up with my own thoughts.

^ top-Bulk Order System and a little bit on Pixel Crack. [Catlyn] January 27 - 6:58 PM EST | How many of you are playing UO and have worked on Smiths in order to get Bulk Order Deeds. It is no secret that I have. You can go through the archives and find a post I did explaining how easy it is to make a low level smith in order to get Deed's.
Next question for those of you still with me. How many of you are currently happy with the system as it is? *scans crowd looking for hands*. Not many. To be honest, me either.
This system, while a great concept, has been poorly ran. From items not spawning initially (Platemail Tunics) to accidental reverts (thanks to the scenario publish), to bugs (Sweetspot anyone?), to a lack of decent rewards.
Don't get me wrong, Mining gloves and sturdy shovels are nifty. The problem with the gloves is that they never wear out unless you plan on wearing them into combat. So for the first little while you get them and collect them trying to get a full set. Once you have that set, every time you get a set, what good are they? You can find them laying on the ground, on vendors dirt cheap, etc.
The Mid level rewards are a bit better in the usuage at least. You have Runic Hammers allowing you to make Magical GM Weapons. This is a cool addition to UO and is something smiths have been screaming for for years. They even came up with a cool way to deliver them. After that you have the colored Anvils and Forges, which for now, have no special effects, but are some more cool pixel crack. Don't get me wrong, I am not a Bank Sitter, but I do like to decorate my house. These forges and anvils are something you can use to personalize your home and make it that much more your own.
Where I Do have a problem is with the dispersal of deeds. I can log in with my GM Smiths and almost be guarenteed of getting a weapon BOD. This in itself is fine. I don't want the high end rewards to be to easy to get. They should be something special in and of themselves. Where I have a problem with this is that those weapon BOD's are worthless. Rewards for them suck and there is no need for them in any of the larges.
OSI needs to do 2 things to help negate the impact of so many weapon deeds.
1.) Make large BOD's for weapons. Whether this is a straight Weapon Large for one particular group like bladed or they include them in an Armor Large makes no diff. It will give them a use and a purpose. That way after you log in 26 times and get your 25th Weapon BOD you won't feel totally ripped off. You might actually be getting something useful.
2.) More low end rewards. A bit of variety in the low end rewards will encourage people to do them more. Right now I am willing to bet you can log in and travel to the smith shop of your choice and find a Weapon BOD laying on the ground. What rewards should they add? That one I have no Idea about. It is the subject of disscusion over on UO.com.
Hanse has even posted a few times on this thread and that tells me OSI is taking notice of it and who knows, maybe something will change. Also, Hanse had this to say:
Keep in mind that we're doing research on tailoring as our possible next BOD system (mentioned that at the faire - I know a few websites reported that tidbit...). :)
It seems the BOD system is here to stay and is going to be expanded. This is a cool thing and great. Now they just have to iron out some of the balance issues with it.
I mentioned that I like decorating my house. One change that came in recently that is kinda bothersome is that you can only dye furniture that is in your backpack. This is neat because you can now make and sell dyed furniture easier. It kinda bites because everytime you want to change your color scheme in your house, you need to unlock everything and put it in your pack to redye it.
There is hope though :
You're right, it should have been an addition to the previous system and not a replacement. We'll change it in an upcoming publish so you can both dye furniture that is in your pack, and dye furniture under the old conditions too.
We're already code locked at this point for a publish that is in testing for before the LBR launch, so the change won't be in there, but we will make a point to get it into a feature publish that comes afterward.
That was posted by Evocare. At least OSI is aware of it and is planning on fixing it. Also, it tells me that they are looking at ways to improve old stuff and not only add new content.
Lastly, for those you following the fiction behind the scenario's, there is a new BNN Story up for your reading pleasure. It can be found here.

^ top-OSI asks for feedback on Tamers. . . [FrozenFire] January 26 - 4:35 PM EST | Joy! Oaks made a post where he asked what changes players wanted for Animal Taming. I just happen to have a few. Lets see. . .
1. Cant Tame, Cant Own - No more 70/70 twinks with powerful pets. 2. Make controlling multiple high level pets more difficult - tamers with 3 white wyrms make a mockery out of "game balance". 3. Make herding required to control more than one pet (not including ridden pets) - Now Mages cant be full mages AND Tamers. Gotta give up something to be a Tamer. 4. Increase stabling charges for powerful pets - a pet that can earn 50K in an hour should not cost 30 gold/week in upkeep. 5. Pet Greed - powerful pets like dragons want a part of the gold they earn for their masters; Tamers and Bards make so much more money/hour than Crafters, Resourcegatheres, Pure mages and Warriors. Lets tone it down a bit.
The idea is balance, not wrecking a class. With balance I mean that Tamers should be able to make good money, because they have one of the hardest skills to GM. But nowhere near what they can do today, because Tamers take next to no risk (the pet soaks up the damage) and requires hardly any player skill (a kill. . .). Dont look at the changes as a package, they are just ideas that can be used as part of a solution for tamers. But if Tamers are toned down, dont forget Bards need changing too.
Anyways, point your browsers here for the uo.com thread.
Update: I just read through the full thread. Judging from what I read, I think they will listen the Cant Tame, Cant Own. 70% of all posts supported "CTCO". I also saw a lot of people wanting something more powerful than a Bear/Bull and less Powerful than a Dragon to tame. Drakes/Wyverns could be put in as a stepping stone to GM.
Most of the ideas I mentioned above was mentioned, so all in all I hope Oaks noticed 'em. Anyways, I saw this excellent idea on "pet stat loss". Basically whenever a pet changes owners (as well as when it is tamed) it goes into 80% stat loss. A 800 hp dragon is now 160 hp. The tamer then has to take its rather weak pet and train it back up. Thats a good thing for dedicated tamers, and effectively cuts out the expendable goldfarming machine trade. Perhaps tamers can be tamers again? Credit goes to Mordanna of the Pacific Rangers Council for the idea. Good thinking out of the box Mordanna.
Also there was this guy that made me laugh. He had a 7 GM tamer and thus felt he had earned the right to be protected from any changes to his favourite skills. If you see a tamer named Jethroe on LS, its probably him. When you see him, please tell him that my 7GM Tank mage didnt stop OSI from dropping precasting and instahitting back in the day. Tough. |
^ top-Response to the feedback on stat loss. [Eric] January 25 - 7:00 PM EST | Here are Adrick's thoughts on what people have been posting as ideas for stat loss:
Alot of the ideas are very thoughtful and cool.
I see alot of people posting complex systems - before a system can be built it requires some basic rewards and penalties - perhaps we can get a general consensus on what is cool and what would not be cool on both sides.
For example I've seen suggestions for
1] Temp stat loss 2] No recall or gate 3] A res timeout
Let's move towards listing bullet points of risk vs reward type stuff - keep in mind whatever system replaces stat loss in order to be considered it must
1] Be cool for reds and blues. 2] Not drive house owners out of Fel 3] Overall bring more people to fel
Fire away

Well, it's good to hear that he's reading the feedback. Again, if you want to express your ideas to him, you can do so here.
Also, here at UOPG, we have a thread discussing this topic.

^ top-Faire Report Part 3 [Nieves] January 25 - 4:13 PM EST | Well, here is the final report on the Faire. Some of the information you might've gotten from other sources or previous updates, but I promised a 3rd Faire Report, and here it is.
Virtues:
The Honor/Dueling system was totally scrapped. It was a case where Cal should've talked to the Dev team before announcing the way this virtue was envisioned. They are working on a new idea for it. He wouldn't say what it was exactly.
The reason Humility was designed the way it is was to create more interaction between veterans and newer players. His feelings seemed to be that veterans (3+ years) and the younger players (<2 years) were not interacting much. He would hope this would "force" more interaction between the various "groups".
They also made the virtues hard because you had to be dedicated to do it. Per Calyndryll: "Worthy to handle it". The stat points was to encourage participation.
Each virtue's reward is the opposite of the virtue.
Why is the decay real time and not game time? Less resources were used in the pverall game system it forces dedicated and consistant participation.
He did note that it is easily exploitable with people getting multiple young accounts. It was noted that if they want to go out and buy all those accounts and continually do it every month, "let them". It's their dime and, eventually, they will grow tired of it. Somethings you just got to leg go.
Note: Calandryll said "assrape" during this session. One of the developers behind him starting shaking his head and mouthing "no, don't say assrape". Too funny. If you were in that Session (and it was a pretty full session), you would know why the flash I posted earlier this week was so funny.
Calyndryll is one of the MOST intelligent people I have ever met.
Fansites:
Cynthe started out by asking us what makes a successful fansite. I answered: content, accurate and up to date information. She was looking to see how UO.Com's guide could be a better benefit to the community. I said it should be the play guide for the new players (how do you run, open the paperdoll, open your backpack, etc.), UOStratics should have the "fun way" of GMing skills and sites like UOPG should be about GMing using the fast track (no exploits and bugs of course). I even gave an example of how this can be done by going over how you fast track Tailoring. One of the other OSI employees faked like he was taking notes and that got a laugh from folks.
Her concern was that the fansites were more up to date than the UO.com site. We told her the fansites are more up to date, we play the game 24/7, they don't. They are working with the game, we are actually doing things in game. Players drive our sites.
I had made the point that every one of the sites had a niche. UOPG definately has one, as does Stratics, UO Journal, and UO.Com's guide. Maybe we should focus on those niches and help each other? Maybe.
Silk made the comment later that it seemed OSI was looking for info to "take away" from our sites. I don't know if that's true, but that's his opinion. Later on, and the weeks after, I have discussed this further with the other fansite members/owners and the feeling was the same from those that attended the session.
Was OSI really trying to take away from the Fansites? Or was the question just mistated? Some day soon I hope to get Cynthe into the UOPG Chat Room and discuss this, and other things, at length. Here is the coolest part of the session: She is going to see about getting a Non-disclosure agreement put together for the major fansites to sign.
If you can imagine the ramifications of this, I am sure you wil agree that is a VERY cool thing. I await to hear from OSI on the status on this.
Note: The sites represented were Black Dagger, Stratics, UOPG, Ianstorm/UO Journal, UO.XR Gaming (Heather), and some guild sites.
BODs
There is a 1 in 18 million chance to get all the 7 deeds to get the valorite hammer. If you are trading, the chance drops to 1 in 1.2 - 1.8 million.
The Runic hammer will work for 51 uses. The Ancient for 153 uses.
The trick in dropping mining and using a pair of mining gloves is legal. Drop mining to 99.9 and mine so you don't get the rocks. Put the gloves back on to get the rocks.
At 95.0 mining and with a pair of +5 gloves, you can read the stone mining book. Which is also legal. Again from Hanse.
The colored Anvils and Forges you get from BODs do nothing special. Just decorative. There has been discussion in adding to the colored Forges to allow them to create "special" items. I don't know what exactly.
There is an official guide to UO:LBR coming out next year. One of the people that work in that company asked for my email address and website. He wants to work with the fansites and put UOPG's URL in it. Joy. Unfortunately, I have yet to hear from this person...
I talked to Tajima briefly (this dude is buff and is cool as hell to boot) and asked him about Felucca. His feeling is that he wants to add to Felucca without hurting Trammel. He says it's not fair to take away from the players. Risk versus Reward came up and he's considering adding some "very cool" (my quote, not his) things to Felucca. What those are, we didn't discuss. He did say not to hold him to it but they ARE looking at making Felucca a LOT more attractive.
----------------
I was told by a few folks that I seemed to really care about the game and I care about making it better. Well, I DO care about this game. I wouldn't be running UOPG if I didn't. I would just play the game.
And OSI does care about UO. Why? Shit, think about it. This is their lively hood. If they don't make us happy (for the most part), UO loses a shit load of subscribers and the game gets shut down. I don't know about you, but right now, in this economy, I really don't want to lose MY job. Would you?
My attitude towards OSI has totally changed. They are not the bad guys people. They CARE about this game. They are bound by programming, people resources, and legal restrictions in what they can and cannot do. Does it mean I won't catch them on it if they screw up? NO, but I will be more sympathetic in the future.
So, I don't think them the bad guys anymore. Yes, there are still issues, but, when taking the time, the issues can be worked out. In fact, any issue can. I am glad OSI has these Fan Fests. They want to know what WE, the players, want for the game. And if they can code it, and it's a reasonable change/addition, they WILL do it.
Believe it.

^ top-Playing The Assassin [Nieves] January 24 - 8:36 PM EST | Playing your new Poison Assassin, by Rockie. Ok, so you read my guide on how to make an assassin, good for you. So now your wondering 'what in the heck do I do to become a pretty pretty hate machine?' Thats where I come in.
Using poison as your best friend There are 4 different types of poison. Three of which can be attained by players. Lesser, Regular, Greater, and Deadly. Before we can decide what potion to use in battle, lets see the effectiveness and relevance of each.
Lesser - loss of approx. 2.5% Health every 2.5 sec. (max 30 hp)
Regular - loss of approx. 5% Health every 2 secs. (max 60 hp)
Greater - loss of approx. 8% Health every 5 secs
Deadly - loss of approx. 15% Health every 5 secs.
Now lets see what conclusions we can draw from this. Lesser poison is useless. Its not good, not even for mages. Regular poison is good for mages, not only does it take 5% of health, but it does it every 2 seconds. This is the best possible poison to use when interrupting. Greater poison and Deadly poison both have a 5 second lapse, plenty of time for a mage to cast cure. Therefore, I suggest only using these on warriors. Greater poison is good because you get more use out of it before having to reapply, deadly poison makes the blade decay faster but it does about 2x as much dmg per time than greater poison. Personally I use greater against warriors because its cheaper, and the weapons last longer. Now in order to use these poisons effectively, you must set a macro to useskill:poison. This saves you valuable time in application of the poison. If your only using one type of poison, set up a UOA macro to useskill:poisoning, target item type: poison potion. This will make it where you only have to click the weapon after you hit the hotkey.
The Perfect Weapon Since fencing is arguably the most versatile of the melee skills in the weapons department, there is a weapon for every occasion/situation. If they use parry, USE A WARFORK. Warforks pass shields like it isn't even equipped. If they are a mage, naturally you would use a kryss, as my avatar says, regular poison+greater agility+kryss = dead mage. If they run like a little panzy non-stop, it is your DUTY, your DUTY mind you, to use a long spear on their azz.
Against Parry Warriors Being the God-like poison fencer that you are, you will eat parry warriors alive, simply keep them poisoned. But if they are smart they will have a macro set to unarm the weapon rather than the shield. If by some chance they do unarm the shield, follow and dbl click while poisoning them. Repeat as necessary untill ghost appears. If they do unarm the wep rather than the shield, keep at it. You get about 6 uses per poison potion off your weapon. My advice would be to wait 10 seconds after he heals himself to apply the poison. It takes the average dexer between 11-13 seconds to heal themself, hence, if you wait 10 seconds before you apply, they will waste a heal on curing your poison.
Against non-parry warriors If they are a warrior and they don't use parry against you, you can officially label them your skank. Use the 10 second trick described in the parry warrior essay and follow them around, if they run around too much (likely so) break out your longspear and throw in a para blow. The only two classes you may have trouble with are pot-whore macers (damn my stamina!) and other poison fencers. Just make sure you carry plenty of pots and you should be fine.
Against mages Being that you have GM magery, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. As long as your stats are balanced, your a fearless killing machine. When you meet up with a mage, and they attack you, precast Greater Heal. After the finish the initial mana dump which you of course survived through your casting greater heal and applying bandages, drinking pots etc, you have a choice to make. You can go offensive (precast lightning) or you can go defensive (precast heal/cure). If you go offensive, precast the spell of your choice, and bum rush em, when they get low on life and attempt the greater heal, drop the spell. You'll get em.
Against other Poison Fencers Mostly depends on who has more experience, as with all great things those who have had the most practice will do the best. Try to keep yourself healed. If they play defensive, play more offensive, and vise versa. Develop your own special techniques. Nieves has a copyrighted move he does where he waits till your low on life, and pulls out his spear. After he hits you a couple of good times he releases his precasted ebolt and you take a dirt nap. Ouch. I usually just precast poison, wait for my poison on my wep to hit, after they cure that i immediately drop the casted poison on them, that usually gets them to waste a heal.
Thoughts? Comments? Requests?

^ top-Tips on Fighting Scenario Creatures - Betrayers. [Catlyn] January 24 - 8:29 PM EST | While looking at some of Cal's posts over on UO.Com, I found a post by one Joshua Rowen. He was talking about something else to do with the scenario, but included this :
As for fighting the Betrayers, they weren't that bad at all, even solo. The only trick was making sure you didn't try meleeing with them because if you did you had a good chance of getting some kind of severe blow to the head. As long as I used my handy-dandy long bow though, I was totally safe. They did have a special attack, which included a sequence of casting a spell that made you lose Intelligence, then what looked like a Fireball, then it would light up with a huge white gas (or electricity) and if you didn't get away, the energy would all come pouring down onto you, doing massive damage. Luckily, all you had to do was get a screen's length away and the energy would disipate, unused. Solo, it would take about 10 minutes to kill one, but with 2 Archers it went VERY quick, maybe 2-3 minutes to kill one.
My only question is, can anyone fill me in on the loot available off them. Between the Virtue Bows and this, it looks like archers are finally getting good to play again.
/me goes to dust off his archer

Ok lets snap back to the subject at hand. Nujel'm, in my eyes this city is only good for one thing. Thats right, its "usually" a safe place to bank if you are in O/C or Factions. But other than that, this place gets less business than a Programmers' computer at OSI. Yeah no joke. there are NO Magic Shops, NO resources, and NO Moongate. So basically, W-O-R-T-H-L-E-S-S. In fact if it wasnt for the bank, then this place would be a frigging ghost town. Take Magnica for example, pretty secluded place with no Smith Shop, but it has a) A Bank, b) A Magic Shoppe, and c) A Moongate thus it gets business, PLUS you can place houses on the beach up North so therefore its a valued housing location. The only housing you will find on Nujel'm are the cardboard boxes that all the NPC Shop Keeper's use as places to live. What?? Already stated the place is a ghost town, NPCs dont make any money. And as we already know, housing isnt cheap these days.
So, what could we possibly do to spruce up Nujel'm a bit to make it a popular hang out for UO preppies? Easy enough, do what you have been doing since the age of 5 and READ ON.
INTRO
"Frazier started this day much differently that what he was used to. The Faction battles as of late had taken a serious toll on his supplies located within the safeguarded vaults of the Britannia Bank. But he knew that he and the rest of the Council had to keep the True Brits at bay or risk loosing the cities they had worked so hard to gain. The Sun this morning was a beatutiful sight, and it only made the building of Nujel'm seem brighter than they ever had been. It was if they were saying "Look at us, because our days on this world are numbered." Yes, Nujel/m was a beautiful city indeed, but unfortunately it never truly made it as a resort island as it had been designed. Sosarians never truly found a need for the city and its "relaxing" properties. Frazier thought to himself, "what a shame there is no peace in this land." yes Frazier had traveled to Nujel'm plenty of times, and usually without danger of running into the enemy. But this morning did not feel right. And for that reason he held his Katana in a way that it could be withdrawn from its scabbard and used at a moments notice, hopefully with much demise to the person or thing its polished blade encountered."
"There was a strong smell of Sulfur in the air. But alas, Frazier could not see any of the much needed reagent anywhere on the ground around the bank. "Why does it smell so strong here" Frazier thought to himself. Afterall, he had not smelled it as strong as this since over a year ago when he had found himself in the middle of the Dungeon Hyloth on a mission for a local Lord."
"All of a sudden, to the east, the ocean erupted in an explosion so great that it knocked Frazier off his horse. He quickly regained his footing, unsheathed his weapon to give fight to the enemy that issued such a harsh blow. Unfortunately, the enemy was not sighted, nor would Frazier every see another enemy again, for his life in Sosaria would be over in mere seconds..."
The Scenario
As you can tell from above, our hopeless hero was killed by an unseen enemy, an explosion if you will. What better way to wipe out an worthless an Island than by a VOLCANO!! Thats right, hell it worked for the Greeks. So why not now? Island gets wiped, then Sosaria is forced to rebuild its usless resort into something more usefull... So what could go here?
The Arena
I know I know, we have the dueling pits. but how bout this. the entire island is changed into a fake city, or hell keep it as is. But instead of recalling onto the island you have to go there via ship. Once there you enter the city via one of two ports. At each port you are automatically placed on a team. And you betcha, its team vs. team depending on what port you enter. Rules? Of course, no looting, or rez-killing. When a preson dies, he automatically gets zipped to a safe area with all of his egar and has to sit out 5 minutes. There would be grandstands throughout the zones for people that wish to observe the proceedings. Of course the "playground" will have no path into the "stands".
The Player Ran Market
Players are enabled to purchase a special vendor deed for a large sum of cash. Hell, say 100k-250k for the deed. With this deed you can place a vendor in certain areas located throughout the city. there has to be a limit due to the fact of lag issues and the like. but, viola!! A huge player ran frikkin market for everyone to enjoy!!
Another Dungeon
Hey why not, every damn spawn in this game is camped more than a ticket office selling tickets for Brittney Spears, so why not design another dungeon, or area that would encompass the island. Hell, works for me.
As you can see there are plenty of ideas for this island. So answer the question, is it "Worthless" or "Not" and post your "Nu Nujel'm" ideas to the following post!!

^ top-The Assassin [Nieves] January 24 - 1:38 PM EST | Creating your poison fencer, by Rockie. One of the deadliest and most feared templates in the game, the poison fencer is one of the most versatile PvP template you could hope to make. The first thing you'll need to create this char is a steady source of greater poison, I found that I went through about 3 greater poison kegs per powerhour. If you don't have an alchemist, make one. With that in mind, lets begin.
Fencing and Tactics As always, this part is at your discretion. I prefer the jhelom spawn myself, as I have GMed every single one of my melee characters there. It usually takes about 7-8 hours outside powerhour to GM from 30 (bought skill). But again, its personal preference. Some people swear by bone knights and others by rotting corpses.
Healing and Anatomy For the sake of the essay, lets do anatomy first. By the time you finish fencing and tactics, your anatomy should have passively raised to somewhere around 78-89. From there, you have 2 choices. You can go to the swamps and try to find a magic animal, or you can heal a ghost on a boat. Once you get a passive anatomy gain from healing, stop the boat and begin healing, you should gain .1 anat per application of the bandage, this can only be done in powerhour though, so don't waste your time outside. As for healing, this can be done by simply 8x8ing on a boat. If you don't know how to 8x8, or your not very good at it, gator has given you the hook up.
Magery Nieves now has me swearing by magery, its fantastic on a warrior character. You can argue all you'd like, but you know as well as I do that having the ability to cast 50 point heals during a mana dump is a life saver. First of all, make sure you have meditation at GM, this will make Magery go alot faster. There are several methods to GM meditation. First of all, you can manadump somthing, put on full plate, get drunk on cider and sail slow forward. [...]
This should take you about 5 hours (possibly 1-2 more, depends on luck). After you GM meditation, make sure you have at least 4.5k of each reg in the bank. Your going to sail slow forward on a boat casting flamestrike on the tillerman. This will take you to about 80. Then your going to cast earthquake 8x8. First powerhour you will go from 30-63, second from 63-80, third from 80-87, fourth from 87-94, fifth 94-98, sixth 98-GM.
Poisoning Poisoning, the bane of all mages, the hell of all parry warriors. Go find the thief guildmaster and buy poisoning to 30 you'll save yourself a lot of time/money. Got those greater poison kegs I told you about, right? Right. Also make sure you have about 3 full kegs of greater cure, cause until 80.1 skill, your going to be poisoning yourself alot by accident. Set up a secure chest in your house and put 3 bags in it. Fill these bags with as many blades as you possibly can. Now going through each bag individually, poison each blade. Once you get a gain, DO NOT MOVE ON!!! Poison that same blade over and over till the gains stop. You can usually get .3-.7 off each blade that gives you a original gain. Rince and repeat as necessary. You should go from 30-58 first powerhour, and 58-70+ second. 70-80 third. It will take you about 5-6 more powerhours from 80.1 to GM. Once you hit 93, begin using deadly poison, it is expensive, but its worth it in the long run. Especially because if you run a vendor, you can sell dped weps at outrageous prices. Another benefit of GM poison is since you already have GM magery, you can cast DEADLY POISON! Although it is a small chance (roughly 5% if your standing one tile away), its still a chance, at the very least your cast greater poison, which is still deadly. At GM poison your blade also corrodes less making your weps last longer per poison. P-Nut also has some useful poisoning info.
Resist Magic resist is the same as always, stand on a boat and have your friend casts summon daemon, attack the daemons. Repeat as necessary. From 30-GM resist with 3 casters and 2 healers it takes around 13 powerhours (or at least in my experience). If you have to solo, I recommend reaper valley (just ask sinister saint).
A couple of notes. When you create this character, I would make her (female assassins are cooler) with 50 poisoning and 50 magery. It will save you on the expense of GMing poisoning (not too mention help your sanity) and you can get Magery GMed that much faster.
I would build the character this way:
1) Set your stats at 100Int/100Str.
2) GM Magery.
3) Reset stats to 100str/100dex.
4) GM Poisoning.
5) Reset stats to 100str/dex as necessary.
6) GM the Warrior 4 (melee, anatomy, healing, tactics).
7) Get a set of stats that are mindblast proof and you are comfortable with.
8) Then finish with resist.
Some say do the warrior set first, but I don't like resetting stats more than I have too.

^ top-When Redrum Speaks... [Nieves] January 24 - 11:25 AM EST | ...about things other than Mansechs and Sheep, you should listen:
I completely agree with what Adrick said. The problem with being a PK was there were no real risks involved, and it was very rampant. I never thought it would be too hard to balance it out with what had they already had (no going into town, freely attackable by all, etc) - they just needed to add some tweaks to balance it out more. They didn't even need to bring in Trammel if they did actually fix it.
One major problem was that PK's weren't always flagged because they could jump from red to blue if they waited long enough (usually while in their house). Or they just killed grays/reds and the occassional blue and kept track of their time, thus staying blue forever. I think a simple solution to this would be some sort of murderer's guild, which would be the only way to kill an innocent. You have to pay a very high fee to join (since simple hair dyes are 500k, this could be too - if not more), and once you join you are permanently flagged as red without ever being able to go back. With the high fee, players also won't be able to trick/scam others (especially newbies) into joining, because they won't be able to afford it, and nobody would give up that much money to trick/scam someone.
Another problem with PK'ing was it was an easy way to get virtually every item in the game and become rich extremely fast with minimal risk, which resulted in many PK's. Everyone you killed produced many items of high value (reagents, armor, weapons, ingots, etc). I think what they could do here is have one or two completely random items stay on the innocents corpse if the PK initiates the attack and is victorious. On the flip side, PK's lose everything when they die from anyone or thing and are freely lootable by all. If an innocent initiates an attack with a PK however, the PK is allowed to loot their entire body, as they would be gray to the PK as normal.
It was also extremely easy to escape. PK's wouldn't normally wait around for a large PvP/anti guild to come after they killed 50 innocents, and if they did happen to meet up with a group that attacked them, they would recall in an instant, and no one would know where they went. Simple solution here is to disable recall if you are a PK. Gate would still work though. It takes longer to cast, is a big drain on mana, can and occassionally does fizzle even at GM magery, AND others can follow suit.
Lastly, help from outsiders (blue healers, ressurectors, paralyzers, etc). They already have this down pretty good with PvP guilds and faction members, where an outsider can't help them at all - even to simply ressurect. Simple thing here is to only allow PK's to help other PK's.
I don't know if these sound too harsh, but I always was a PK myself, would play as one under these terms and think it would be a good way to balance it out without the need of stat loss, which is the worst loss a character can possibly take and completely sucks ass.

Great freaking ideas.
You can read this forum thread for a continuing discussion on the stat loss topic Eric-GL brought up the other day along with some clarifications from Reddy himself.

^ top-Some Scenario News [Nieves] January 24 - 8:59 AM EST | Juka Lords
Can have their equipment (including Virtue Bows) stolen from them on Felucca, using the random steal option.
Thank to Tal of UOLS for the information.
I spent a couple of hours last night, with Kitiara's help, adding a new database to the UOPG site. This database will be used to upgrade our PvM Section. If the Database turns out to be as functional as it seems to be, I will see about upgrading our Character Creation Section with it.
Now, where is KH when you need him?

^ top-JOY! [Nieves] January 24 - 8:30 AM EST | We're hoping to bring Test Center 4 live within the next couple days, so be sure to come back tomorrow to see the latest news. Remember that this is a final beta test, so be sure to report any bugs you find to tcbugs@uo.com.
Once Test Center 4 is made live, anyone without the UO:LBR can log in as well, but will not see anything different, and will not be able to access Ilshenar in the 2D client.
Hmmm...I can get to Ilshenar on the regular shards. Oh wait! The Art isn't there on those shards! Anyone want to log on with me on Great Lakes, Catskills, or Test Center 4 to check stuff out?

^ top-So you want to be a Golemeer, eh? [Catlyn] January 24 - 7:56 AM EST | Found this on the forums this morning before work. Good read on making Golems.
This isn't going to be for people that just want a bodyguard for their mule. If that is what you are wanting, then just work Tinkering and Meditation into your template.
You are a powergamer right? You aren't wanting the power of this metal beast to speed up your hide gathering, you want to kill. To push the creature to its limits. To do so, however, you need to be very prepared. When your golem takes damage, you lose mana, then life. This is bad. Healing with magery is a moot point because if you are needing to heal, you have no mana. This is also bad. Knowing this, however, we can determine mucho important skills:
Tinkering: To make and heal your own golems. Meditation: Keep that mana-regen up while you lose it due to golem damage. Magery: I'm assuming you don't want to hold hands and walk your golem everywhere. Healing: You need an efficient healing method if things get hairy. If you are pushing your golem(s) to the max, then losing life shouldn't be a rarity. Healing through Magery isn't an option due to lack of mana and chugging healing pots all day isn't exactly the best method either.
This leaves you with three skills left over. Remember ingots are used to heal the golem, so if you don't have a mule or another character with Mining, then it should be seriously considered as a fifth skill. Each template will have the option for adding Mining. Obviously, this would somewhat weaken the character, but you don't want your character to be a gold sink and with the increasing popularity of BODs, ingots are going down in price any time soon.
Eval. Int./Wrestling/Resist The pure mage golemeer. You've got the mage 5 + Tinker/Heal. Very effective in PvM as well as PvP. If needed, drop Resist in favor of Mining.
Music/Peace/Provo The controller. Very effective in PvM as all bards are. And you've got that extra fire power when there is only one creature around. Peace or Provo can be substituted with Mining, really a personal preference. I would drop Peace before Provo, because you are still very effective solo'ing with Music/Provo. Peace on this template would seem more to just be an emergency button.
Weaponskill/Tactics/Anatomy The warrior golemeer. With anatomy you can now cure poison and rez. If something has to be dropped in favor of Mining, however, Anatomy should be the first to go. With this template, you just put your golem on the creature and then jump in the pit yourself. Archery would allow you to assist from afar making it a great choice here especially for those retargetting baddies.
Taming/Lore/Veterinary The taming golemeer. You own PvM. Somedays you feel like hunting high-level spawn. Other days you avoid the oppression of being an icky tamer and bust out your mid-level spawn-killing machine. Focusing on being more of a Golemeer than a Tamer, the strategy here would be to go out fighting with your golems while riding a kirin, unicorn, or mare. If things are looking bad for Mr. Golem, then you dismount and relax. Plus with 240 points dedicated to these three skills, you get five stable slots. If Mining is essential, then drop Veterinary for it. GM Taming/Lore still nets you four stable slots, enough for a mount and three golems.
If you want to do the occasional PvPing, then the warrior or pure mage golemeer would be the way to go. If you are just wanting to hunt and make a little gold, then the Controller or taming golemeer is the right choice for you.
Golem Creation: Remember that you can only make 5 golems during any 24 hour period and you need these materials to make one: Clockwork Assembly Power Crystal 50 Iron Ingots 50 Bronze Ingots Gears
Healing/Repairing your golem: (Be within 2 tiles) Double-click tinkering tools Click Repair button Target Golem Golem is healed. Iron ingots are used up. I believe you can use bronze ingots also, but I've only used iron. The more damage you heal, the more ingots are used. Also note that there is a 12 second delay between heals.
Finding a need to repair your golem: Golems are immune to poison and are practically immune to magic too. The are not, however, uber melee specialist. You put one against an Ogre Lord and you might as well start thinking about making your new golem. Basically, golems can handle a majority of the mid-level spawn, especially those magic-oriented baddies (think elementals, gazers, daemons). I'm sure most of you are quite experienced with the monsters inhabiting the lands and dungeons of UO, so I'm attaching a series of reports that Sister Kendra, of the UOSS Tinkers forum, made while testing her GM-made golem, Ozzy Jr. These reports have great information and will really give you a comparative idea of what your monster is capable of. Just remember this is with a GM-made golem. Golems produced by lesser-skilled tinkers will be much weaker.
Without further ado: Golem Reports by Sister Kendra of UOSS Tinkers Forum
Report #1: My new Golem vs. the liches When golems were first introduced and I got my first crystal, I made one with my tinker at 88 skill. I killed a few bears with him and marched down to the woods near the orc fort to pit him against a lich.
Ozzy (as in Ironman, get it? uh...never mind) died very quickly. So I committed to GM Tinkering and try again. I GM'd last night and promptly made Ozzy Jr. We gated to the lich woods and attacked the first lich we found.
I was initially disappointed by his performance. My dexer equipped with a silver katana kills a lich in about 10 seconds. It took Ozzy much longer. The good thing though was he lost little health. With no repairs whatsoever, he only lost about 1/5 of his health.
Unfortunately, I've never played a tamer so I have no clue how to control a pet. Well I ended up watching Ozzy wade, on his own, into a crowd of three liches. I thought he was history but I rode after him and prepared to repair. He lost a lot of health initially, like 1/4 health in the first 10 seconds but I repaired that back to full. I was shocked to see how long the repair delay was and didn't get to repair him again until he was a hair under half health. I had lost all my mana and didn't think to actively meditate so I just kept applying bandages to keep my health up.
Ozzy killed all three liches and I never lost more than about 10 hp. WTG Ozzy!
I killed a few more liches but made another dumb control mistake and dropped him into a group of FOUR liches. Instead of repairing right away, I stayed about 3 tiles back and just meditated. This worked much better. I mainted active meditation throughout the fight and never lost any health. I repaired the golem three times but was a bit disappointed to see how little it healed. I think the best I saw was a 1/4 health gain. I guess I was expecting similar results as healing or casting GH but it's more like drinking a GH potion. Ozzy killed all four of those liches and we called it a night since I was running low on ingots.
I do have a question for all you experienced tamer/golemeers: How do you handle a retargeting monster? I was thinking about trying a daemon but I think the daemon would target me the whole time instead of the golem and switch to me any time I tried to get close enough to repair. Prophecy: I'm pretty sure you can just teleport next to your golem to repair and avoid retargetting, right?
Report #2: Golem vs. Daemon Well after all your great advice in my post about liches, I decided to take Ozzy to the hedge maze. I'd never been there before but heard it was a good place to kill daemons.
I rode there and marked a rune and then gated Ozzy in. I had him stand in the corner (Bad Golem! ) while I went to find a daemon. Sure enough, one found me soon enough. I rode back to Ozzy and waited for him to arrive. Once the daemon got close enough, I teleported over the hedge and stood to watch the battle.
Before Ozzy reach the daemon, it casted a few spells on me. Clumsy, magic arrow, etc. No big deal. Then it cast poison. At this moment, I realized something terrible; being a mule, my tinker is not at all prepared to handle any emergencies in the wild. I had no cure potions. My healing is at 55 and my anatomy is zero. My spell book has about 15 spells in it and cure is NOT one of them.
My health plummeted and I knew I was going to die so I recalled to Skara at the last minute and died in front of the bank.
I rezzed quickly, re-equipped, and bought some cure pots. Recalling back to the hedge maze, I was shocked to see Ozzy standing over the corpse of the daemon with almost full health! Rock on, Ozzy!!
So we spent the next hour killing daemons. I was surprised to see that my golem takes MUCH less damage from a daemon than he does from a lich but it takes longer to kill them. At one point, Ozzy fought 2 daemons and 3 imps at the same time and never got below half health. I repaired him at that point even though there were only a few imps left. The key for me was to actively meditate while he fought so I never lost more than 15 mana points during the entire battle.
Thanks again for the advice on retargeting monsters and controlling a pet!
Report #3: Golem vs. Ice Fiends The Ice Fiend's (IF) Lair is one of my lockpicker's favorite spots so I marked another rune and pulled Ozzy out of the stables. We gated in (I finally raised magery to 80 so i can gate without a scroll...big plus! [NOTE: raised magery from 33 to 63 in one PH and from 63 to 80 in the second. LOL! What an easy skill!]). There was an Ice Fiend ready to play so I "Ozzy kill'd" and watched the fight.
Ice Fiends are MUCH tougher than daemons. Ozzy was quickly down to 3/4 health and I was losing mana fast. The IF pretty much tracked right with Ozzy for health so I figured a few repairs and he'd be OK.
Amidst bandages, meditating, and running from that annoying cold damage, I repaired Ozzy twice and he killed the IF.
I killed three more and saw my title go to "Illustrious." Three days ago, I was "the Rude" (from using snooping to ping-pong dex). Two mages gated into the area and I offered them the next IF. They either gave up or chickened out because as I was meditating, the IF targeted me and I was already a bit low on health. I tried to run but died after 2 consecutive flamesrikes. I watched Ozzy die a short time later.
I got my stuff back but was retargeted by the IF again and died in one hit. I actually invins'd at my corpse but the IF wandered by and his cold aura revealed me. At this point I figured that the 80 regs and 120 ingots wasn't worth the trouble and recalled home.
So Ice Fiends are definately tough but can be handled with repairs. Be very careful, though, as they re-target fast and there's not enough room to run. The cold aura hurts and will reveal you if you're hidden or invised and the IF will target you immediately.
So I'm down to "Noble" or something like that but will hopefully be back to Illustrious soon. I think it will be cool to eventually be a Lord Mule!
I only have 3 more power crystals so I'd better find more or learn how to keep a golem alive. I haven't seen a golem/controller spawn in a few days; anyone know if they stopped at the end of the scenario?
Report #4: Golem vs. Poison Elemental (yeah, I'm stupid!) I headed to Shame to try my luck against Elder Gazers but they were more camped than the ticket booth for Harry Potter so I moved up a level and found the Poison Elemental. I don't know what made me think this was a good idea but my newbie mage has killed a few PE's so I gave it a try.
I knew immediately that Ozzy was in trouble. Before even scratching the PE, Ozzy was hurt and I was losing mana. By the time I got my first repair in, I was out of mana and losing health.
I stood by Ozzy's side and kept a steady stream of repairs going for him and bandages for me as well as trying my best to meditate. Twice during the fight, Ozzy's healthbar was completely red but the repair kicked in just in time to save him.
Report #5: Golem vs. Elder Gazers Getting tired of these yet?
I took Ozzy to Shame Level 4 to try his hands at the most popular Tamer camping spot I know of, the Elder gazers.
I tried several times before I found the spot uncamped. I'm using the small, isolated alcove at the end of the bridge in the southern portion of the level. This was another favorite spot of my lockpicker so I knew it well. I also knew that it was very, very rare that someone wasn't there with a dragon.
I finally found it empty and unleashed Ozzy III (Ozzy II died to a spawn of 2 daemons and 8 imps at the hedge maze...I hate imps!). Now I know why this spot is so popular with the tamers.
Ozzy had no trouble at all with the elder gazer. With no repairing whatsoever, he finished the first fight with over 3/4 health and I never lost any noticeable mana. I repaired him once after each battle and killed a dozen or so EGs. Each EG carries about 1000 gold and gave me "A lot" of fame and karma at the Admirable level. This was easy money.
At one point, I got so cocky as to recall to the bank in the middle of a fight to drop off gold and pick up more ingots and Ozzy was doing fine when I returned.
The only problem, other than trying to find the spot uncamped, was that you've got to be very quick with your "Ozzy kill" command because the area is fairly small. The EG will target you if you don't start your golem fighting soon. If it does, you need to run back across the bridge and either hide or invis. That can be tough sometimes because there is often an acid or fire elemental wandering around that area.
The spawn is very fast and it was usually less than 30 seconds between EGs; sometimes less than 10. Be quick with the commands!
Report #6: Golem vs. Cows by Dragoon of Siege, humorours post) Well, after reading all of the exciting posts about golems against, Ele's, Liches, Ice Fiends, Daemons, etc. I thought that I would add my two cents :-)
Guido, being the killing machine that he is, is the greatest tool for cow killing! My tailor/tinker on Siege has limited fighting skills. Guido has become an awesome tool for collecting hides....hehe.
I think he throws the Pk's off stride though. Outside Delucia is a favorite place for Pk's to kill the players collecting hides and the tamers in training. When a Pk comes calling now, I just cast para on the Pk and send Guido over to have a chat with them. He is very convincing.
Enjoy
Very nice write up Prophet.

^ top-A common question & the chance for a resolution. [Eric] January 23 - 11:10 PM EST | Regarding stat loss for murderers, Adrick answered a question that I've seen many times on various different forum threads. Check it out:
Quote: "With Trammel in existence, why is there a need for statloss at all? Temporary or permenant? "
Many reasons 1] Housing - people live in Fel, they cannot simply "move to trammel" there are communities, vendors etc. 2] In absence of stat loss there would be no penalty at all for being red - being red is a huge advantage in pvp a] Reds can use field spells aoe spells without care - blues cant. b] reds can attack anyone - pick all their fights, initiate combat with whatever they wish - another huge advantage - blues if they want to remain blue cannot.
Further - in the old days there were lots of victims, a few pks, and fewer antis. In general people do not like to be victims. With the introduction of trammel we gave people a choice of risk - trammel - no risk at all to pks, or fel with a risk but governed by stat loss. There currently are no rewards for playing in Fel for non pkers (other than they keep their house, communities). A majority of the players have expressed they like trammel better (they play there more). Now if we remove stat loss without doing something else, suddenly the risk in Fel goes way up. The people who are there who accept the current risk but will not accept more risk will either attempt to move to trammel or outright quit the game. The victims will all leave. Now Constantly the pkers and antis claim this would be great cause it would bring back the olden days of dread vs. anti - not true those days require unwilling participants - otherwise everyone simply make a red and duke it out like abyss shard. That may be fun for a few days or perhaps even weeks but pvp with no goal is not good for the game in the long term.
So we have stat loss - is stat loss perfect? No, I'm not here to say stat loss is the best answer; it's one that's been around a while - I'm looking for ideas on what would be a viable replacement for stat loss.
The goal would be
1] More people playing in Fel 2] A balance between being red and being blue - that is risks and rewards on both sides.
Feedback?
Here is your chance. Over and over, you have asked this very question. Why stat loss? Over and over, many of you have expressed ideas for an alternative to stat loss. Adam Ant has an entire proposal for one. If you're one of these people who enjoy PKing and enjoy the "Felucca experience" but hate the fact that stat loss can often times restrict this enjoyment, express your thoughts. Adrick's post was in this thread, so I'm assuming that's where you can post your ideas for an alternative to stat loss. Go for it - this is your chance to make a change.
Along with letting Adrick know what your ideas are, feel free to post them here as well.

^ top-Put your resume back, Nieves. [Eric] January 23 - 9:27 PM EST | Although Cal is no longer handling the scenarios for UO, that does not mean there is no one to fill his shoes. He gave some insight as to who will be handling the scenarios...
"Just a quick note to let you know that I've been given the opportunity to work on another aspect of UO so I won't be handling the scenarios anymore. Ignatz (some of you may know him better as Twilight) will be heading up the scenario team, which should be a great role for him since he spent over two years creating and designing Interest events (when he starts posting, be sure to ask him about the time he accidentally slayed himself while running a quest). And of course, Augur and Gromm will continue to be on the team, so you can continue to look forward to their work (and Gromm's fiction!) for some time to come."
