^ top-Its just a game
[FrozenFire] August 31 - 2:37 PM EDT
A while ago a good friend of mine went hunting for power scrolls. This was just after p16 went live, so when he got one he was quite excited. But then he made a bad mistake. Instead of just leaving, he stayed in the lag to pick up the piles of gold dropping on the ground. And so the scroll was stolen by some theif.

He told me about over icq later the same day and lets just say he was beyond upset. He even told told me he had only been this angry twice in his life. Ive been giving this quite some thought ever since.

I have been known to slam my fists in frustration when I am killed, even screaming. Its been a while, and it didnt happen all that often. But it did happen as I was playing a game. A game. And Ive seen others loose their temper often enough as well. Im sure most people with experience in guild matter have seen plenty of drama and conflict between guilds - and maybe more so within for for that matter. Some conflict can be discounted as the nature of the game. But where does interest and emotional attachment to a game begin to turn the game into something else? Something more serious and possibly unhealthy?

Many of you probably read Lum the Mad's site before he signed on to hawk Mythic's product. Quite a few times he reported how some MMORPG, and EQ in particular, had turned into a substitute life experience to someone. I dont know about you, but playing a game around the clock for extended periods of time seem pretty extreme to me. When the game begins to take up a too large place in someones life, events and experiences in, and around it, take on a new meaning beyond what we would normally expect a game to do to us.

So how much is too much?

Who am I to tell you? All I can say is, I didnt sign onto UO to slam my fist into tables just because I died. But, all in all, I regard that as a rather minor effect. But what about the time I went ballistic just because a guild member counted me? Or the time I spewed profanity at another guild member for using my door to channel a hord of monsters one at a time. Thinking back about it, I think I vented frustrations from having a bad day inside a game context. Im sure many of you can relate and provide your own examples.

UO is just a game. We all better not forget that. Because its easy to forget sometimes. Its just a game - right?

As always, your opinion matters. You can discuss further here.

^ top-OSI Gets Blitzed!
[Nieves] August 31 - 12:59 PM EDT
Many people who have been in UO for more then three years have seen drastic changes. A little too many to my belief. People stay in a game long cause they like the Recipe that they are given. See it as going to a restaurant all the time cause you like it.

What kind of recipes is Blitz talking about??

^ top-Zero Tolerance
[Lealla] August 30 - 3:13 PM EDT
While trolling a few messge boards today, I ran across this gem by Jade of game-master.net

This has been a real hot topic on the boards at uo.com lately. By Hot Topic, I do not refer to the less than earth-shattering topics posted by OSI staff in their Daily Hot Topics Forum. If you want to discuss backpack organization or eating in UO, go there. If you want to find out what the players actually consider important topics that need to be discussed, look through the discussions forum and find the locked threads. These are the topics we want to talk about, that OSI doesn't want us to discuss.
The hottest of these topics lately has been the Zero Tolerance policy in general, and specifically the automatic suspension of players who use the word Rape in any context.

Rape has been deemed one of those Zero Tolerance words by the powers that be at OSI. Any use of it in any context can get you banned if another player pages on you. Doesn't matter if he is ghosting in your house, hidden, and not part of your conversation. Even if you are clearly not harrassing him (or even aware of his presence), all he has to do is page under harrassment and if the GM finds that naughty R word anywhere in the journal he submitted, you are in deep shit.

Wow, very interesting points are made in this post. Read the rest HERE

Till Next Time...

A wonderful Tale taking shape for our readers here at UOPG.. Written By Sigmund Arris.

Steam rose from the water bucket by the anvil. Sigmund ran a rag across his forehead soaking up the sweat that has gathered from the heat of the forge. Resting the finished dull copper katana on his bench he walked over to get a pint of ale before taking a seat in the hot tub. Filling his stein a bit he took a brief sip and looked outside. A shadow caught his sight out of the corner of his eye, but only for a moment. He shrugged and walked back over to the tub and set his drink on the side and began to get in.
*knock knock knock*
Taking his feet back out of the water he put one of his robes back on and walked to answer the knocks.

"Whomever is there, I hope this is important......" he stopped short as he looked around and saw no one. Looking down he found a note. Turning it around the seal that was carefully placed on the tab of the envelope froze him in his place. The Mark of the White knight caught him off guard. Reaching for his axe behind the door he hurried outside and looked around in a panic.
Assuring himself that there was no one out there anymore he walked back inside and sat at the table. Carefully removing the seal he opened up the letter.

The story continues HERE

Till next time...

^ top-You Know, If I Wanted It, I Would Tell You
[Nieves] August 30 - 7:04 AM EDT
But you don't give a shit anyway.

The updating of houses owned by single-house owning accounts to Primary House status (previously mentioned here) has been postponed. Barring any issues, our current plan is to instead initiate this automated change beginning on Saturday. Over the course of the day, accounts that only own one house will have those houses automatically set as "Primary Houses."

No choice here folks. It happens whether you want it or not. Is it a good thing? For those that would rather not refresh there houses. Now, with OS.. er EA Austin's track record, who wants odds that someone will lose a house with this change?

^ top-Oh OSI, OSI. Wherefore art thou OSI?
[Hennarr] August 29 - 12:51 PM EDT
You know what? I’m an idiot sometimes. You would think after all this time, all the past events, and all the lies and broken promises that no one in their right mind would see OSI for anything other than what it is. What is that you ask? It’s a small, once great, now battered company owned by EA. It really is EA Austin, pretty much a division of the monolithic company everyone seems to blame for anything that ever went wrong with OSI. OSI used to make the most amazing computer games. For those of you too young or new to the computer gaming scene to understand what a phenomenon the single player Ultima series and the Wing Commander series was, you really missed out. Unfortunately, OSI has become UO’s caretakers for EA, and little else. Ultima 9 was one of, if not the most, disappointing ends to a beloved series of computer games in the history of computer gaming. The game was horribly overdue, buggy, and just plain sucked. It marked the end of OSI developing viable, stand alone games. The shock of UO2’s cancellation is still felt today, and in my opinion was a major mistake even though the state of Ultima 9 upon release led me to believe that UO2 was more hype than anything else, which might have factored into its cancellation. Click here to see why I am so worried about OSI and UO's future.

^ top-Deady Speaks

Compare this to todays Ultima Online.... people have nothing like this and they dont really need it now do they. Everyone has multiple accounts with 7x GM loaded out characters, houses full of eye candy, and just about anything they can ever want. There is no real struggle, hell even when you die now you go to town with all your items still on you. What is the most you lose?.... a SCROLL?! To be honest with you, I have gotten scrolls and you know what I am doing with them.... nothing. I dont want them, will not use them. We lock them down in a tower and look at them with a huge WTF attitude. Power scrolls is just one other item that OSI has added to try and "balance" out their mistakes of Power Hour, and the easy living street they made when they created a MIRROR image of the ORIGINAL Ultima Online land scape.

Always has, always will be my favorite UO Writer. Give 'em Hell Deadone.

^ top-Explosion Tactics
[Nieves] August 28 - 8:06 AM EDT
I'll take a whack at this.

Make a UOA macro that looks like this:

Pause 1200
Use Item Type (Greater Explode)
Target (hit ESC)
Pause 3300 (this value ranges from 3300 to 3700)
Use Item Type (Greater Explode)
Target - Last Target

When you define the key for this (I use F4), make sure you check the "Pass on to UO" box. This is very important.

Then make a UO macro that looks like this:

CastSpell Explosion
Delay 29
Last Target

You can follow this up with CastSpell Earthquake for one-shot kill madness if you don't fizzle quake, or I do a CastSpell E-Bolt/WaitForTarg/LastTarget.

Some explanation:

When recording the UOA macro, you need to hit ESC for that first target line. UOA will pick it up as a target, but you get blown up doing it. For the pause line, this needs to be tweaked to your connection speed. It is also variant depending on server lag for that day. I recommend testing and tweaking it before using the macro heavily - I seem to have to change it hourly.

If you set your UO macro to explode/quake, and you don't fizzle, it's pretty much a one shot kill - explode and quake hit at the same time and a split-second later the explode potion finishes the job. I suggest this setup if you've power-scrolled your magery - making that fart noise at a crucial time allows your opponent to chug and then he's still in the game. Also, if you time the potion right, it'll look like the potion explodes on you, but you don't take damage.

I use the explode/boom/ebolt version because it's nofail. There's a tiny delay between explode/boom and ebolt (enough that if opponent had a g-heal precast he could probably target it), but no time for anything else really. Just as an FYI with a 100 magery 100 eval char, explode/boom/ebolt takes out a 100hp 98resist char almost every time. Everything also hits at once - it's a massive element of surprise thing. If you don't kill them (double resist I suppose), going from full HP to like...6 in a blink will certainly send them into panic mode and then you can finish the job - I'd use lightning - decent damage, and more importantly, nice range for when they run. Also for the PvM crowd, if you use the quake version, two take down a dragon. I should also mention that my bomber has 0 real alchemy, and 6.2 displayed due to stats. At GM alchy I believe that explode/pot/ebolt would be a 1-shot kill every time.

What I did was go to the NPC alchemist and buy a bunch of lesser explodes. Getting the timing down is the most important part - you know the damage is mighty, so why keep torching yourself while practicing. My usual attack method was to get them on last target with eval int (player) or paralyze (monster), then step out of splash damage range and whack F4. If you wanted to be like...hyper ultra gay, you could add a speak: Someone set us up the bomb! to the beginning of your UO macro, but I don't recommend that.

There's another method for doing a double purple bomb, and a triple purple bomb (in which two or three g-booms go off at the same time) - if there's interest I may write these up.

As an aside - Nieves, or any other faithful reader, let me know if you need clarification on any points.

Hmmm....See Grey/Red/Orange in the 'field', use EQ Scroll, prime Explosions, let fly...

Let me back up....Mr. Tact was honest. I respect his honesty. Just to show Mr. Tact some respect from me: Believe me, I'm not happy about this solution either. I would prefer that all bugs of this nature get fixed ASAP. The realities of developing this type of product dictate that sometimes, we don't get to choose to do what we prefer.

-Mr. Tact

Thank you...now...

Ok, so it's ok to leave shit broken in game because something else is more important.

Sometimes, I hate this fucking game. Ok wait. No, I don't hate this fucking game. I hate the philosophy of the fucking Development and Community Teams at OSI.

Gawd I got to see the resume of the person that has created these 'plans of actions':

"Ensure bugs remained in game so we can get out new content thereby telling the community we could give a flying fuck about their needs, concerns, and crashing over bugs that should've been caught during the QA cycle. Continually met the needs of our marketing teams and corporate bottom line as opposed to making a solid game".

^ top-Make UO Faster - Decrease Lag / Increase Speed
[Lealla] August 23 - 11:22 AM EDT
Ok peoples, here it is. All my wisdom contained in one message. Now some of the things in this post may be technically advanced to some of you folks, so enlist your kids to help. If you don’t understand something, then get on groups.google.com and do a search for your question. You will be surprised that you are probably not the only one with that question, but you can learn something on you own. With that being said, let’s get started. First off…

Internet Connection

A lot of people think since they have broadband (cable modem, DSL) they are fine and don’t need to read this. Wrong! All versions of Windows since Win95 have been configured out of the box for Local Area Networks (LANs). Well, unless you have a 10Mbit connection to your ISP, you need to read this. We use TCP/IP for our connection to the UO server from our client, so we need to tweak that to be compatible with our type of connection. You will be amazed, when properly tweaked, how fast your internet connection can be. Here is a simple form that will give you a general idea if your broadband connection is being used to it’s fullest (don’t worry dialup users, I’ll get to you in a sec). I have always used SpeedGuide.Net for all my connection tweaking needs. Excellent site. I suggest you broadband people read the guides and articles and make an attempt to squeeze every ounce out of your connection. For you dial-up users (poor souls), I suggest you download Accelerate 2K2 3.0 from Tucows.com. It is shareware and will expire in 15 days, but you only need it for one. =) It works on all windows versions (95/98, ME, NT, 2K, XP). As always, you don’t understand something, look it up. Learn people, learn!

^ top-Housing Info
[Nieves] August 22 - 2:18 PM EDT
Posted yesterday, but still of importance:

We finally had a chance to discuss whether or not to set houses to primary that are owned by players with only one house. We have decided to go ahead and do this, since there are numerous upsides and no apparent downsides.

I will be doing this next Thursday, August 29. House state changes will be picked up the next time houses come back from maintenance, so single-house accounts should have their houses automatically set to primary at shard up on Friday. We are still on track to turn on housing Phase 3 (the end of automatic refresh) on Tuesday, September 3.

You will be affected by this if you had only one house per shard when your houses were registered. You also must have only one house on your account (total) and your account must be active when I run this process. If you had multiple houses on a shard (under the old grandfathering rules) and traded them away until you only have one, that one house will not be recognized by the update process and you will still have to set it to primary manually, if you want it to autorefresh.

MrTact

So, another choice taken away.

Aren't you glad you have me to point this stuff out?

^ top-My Mule Will Owns Juus!
[Nieves] August 22 - 11:41 AM EDT
Stratics had a great tale about a mule and a would be killer:

Hail and well met! I am Namir'raj, Lumberjack and tradesman. I have a story to tell of the evils that men do and how crime doesn't pay. Now, as I already mentioned I am a tradesman with no skills in fighting and war. Now granted I do know a bit of the mystic arts but one must be able to deal with the occasional mongbat or spider that tend to inhabit the woodlands. But, thats another story for another day.

My story today is of a non-monster type, well... monster. I decided in the early morn to travel to the dark lands of Fellucca to harvest my wood for the day. It seems that as of late the woods are more bountiful in the dark lands. So I got my trusty work horse who I affectionately named "Here, hold this" And headed for the moongate near my hometown of Skara Brae. Not knowing much of Fellucca I decided to stick with an area I knew and travelled to the "other" Skara Brae.

My day went as usual with not much excitement. Though I did almost kill my horse, accidents will happen when swinging an axe as I do. I stayed pretty close to town because with my skill and the limit of my horse it would take to much time out of my day to walk back and forth to my bank box. So I chopped through the woods in town and worked my way all the way around to the moongate once again. I saw a trail of nice bountiful trees leading back to town and decided that was my last stretch before calling it a day. Loathing the fact that on tomorrow's morn I would have to take all the logs I had cut today and make weapons for the local Bowyer. 'Tis a working man's life indeed.

As I began my last stretch an odd "warrior" came through the gate behind me. Proud warrior he was with a full set of armor made from the hides of a dragon! Impressed I was at the marvel until I noticed he rode astride a llama! I couldn't help but to chuckle to myself at the sight of it. The warrior had noticed this methinks for he aproached with anger upon his face.

"I shall jump thou!" said the warrior in a strange tounge. Although for the life of me I didn't know what challenge my horse could give him. So since his quarrel wasn't with me I kept making my way towards town, his would-be victim in tow, chopping trees. As I got closer to town I started hearing the warrior shouting many different words of protection. Obviously my horse was tougher than I had given him credit for. When out of the blue I start to feel sick! That little bugger had poisoned me!

Instantly a bolt of lightning came from the sky as tho Zeus himself were protecting me, and where the poor warrior had once stood, a guard was now. I thanked the kind guard for his help and he flashed me a hardy grin and walked back towards town leaving me alone with the corpse of my would be killer. When suddenly I realized I was still sick! I had forgotten this in lite of the spectacle before me. So I chanted a few words my grandfather had taught me and chased the toxins away. Now for what to do with this body? I am not much the criminal type, nor am I a thief. I believe every man should earn what he gets. But that armor would fetch a pretty drinking penny back home. So I decided to peruse the remains of my attacker and help myself to his armour. After all, what use does a ghost have for such things, right?

So, that said, I must be off now. There is more work to be done today. A tradesman never rests. Fair thee well my "honest" friends.

signed,
Namir'raj of Skara Brae

OMG that is hilarious.

The lesson? Don't poison so close to town. Guards don't like that...

^ top-Resist Spell Tests
[Nieves] August 22 - 6:35 AM EDT
Here is a short update to my initial test that finally proves my theory that resist now offers a passive damage reduction...
100 evaluating intelligence and 100 magery vs. 62.4 resist...
Average unresisted damage of an explosion/energy bolt combination: 64.

100 evaluating intelligence and 100 magery vs. 0 resist...
Average unresisted damage of an explosion/energy bolt combination: 71.

100 evaluating intelligence and 100 magery vs. 100 resist...
Average unresisted damage of an explosion/energy bolt combination: 60.

Any castings where I actively resisted the spell were discounted. Each combination was casted 10 times, which means my numbers might be slightly off, but not to the point that my conclusion is refutable.

Resist used to be useful only after 90 or so, because, well, everyone has 100 evaluating intelligence. Now, however, even 60 resist will help you survive. You might never actively resist a spell, but the reduction in damage is there.

^ top-Cynthe Asks About Factions.
[Nieves] August 20 - 10:04 PM EDT
Yesterday, OSI put out a Factions Topic:

Do you participate in factions?

No. Forced stat loss? Nope. Ganks? I can go to B*C Island on Great Lakes if I want to be ganked.

How often do you become involved in factions, and how often do you spend time in other non-factions pursuits?

I did on Pacific. It got old.

What is your favorite feature of the faction system?

The idea of world control. Too bad it didn't work exactly right.

I think we covered the problems with factions somewhere...

And I seem to remember a number of discussions in our archives about it...but what do we know? We just powergame skills and never play.

BTW: Kudos Cynthe for tackling a truly thoughtful question as opposed to something silly like Backpack organization. But, OSI would never do something silly right?

^ top-Hanse on Powder of Temperance
[Nieves] August 20 - 8:40 AM EDT
The maximum durability of an object is increased. The powder jars have ten charges. The applicable types are items Blacksmiths can craft (metal).
Repeatedly using a powder up on a weapon or armor extends their life. The main point to note is that if you use it on a weapon, the percentage of damage dealt out over time is scaled lower by damage to the item. An example... If I have a katana with 50 durability and take 1 point of damage, then damage the weapon dishes out is scaled back by 2% per durability. If I applied the powder to the object to get it up to 100 durability, then the damage dished out would only be scaled back by 1%. This means you can hunt longer without requiring repair. Although, blacksmiths will be the folks with the powder... The only drawback so far is that the powder cannot be used on someone's equipment in a secure fashion.

^ top-Why blues will get owned, again and again
[FrozenFire] August 18 - 12:08 PM EDT
If you scroll down a screen or two, you can read Nieves on the LS champion spawn. Apparently, a large group of reds decided they deserve power scrolls more than anyone else. Although I havent seen it on Europa yet, Im sure its only a matter of time before the big pvp guild realize this is the way to go for them.

Most blues at a champion spawn only have one thing in their heads: Await the champion and blast it and then pray they get a scroll. So when they are attacked they either die or run away. Few will fight back. And ever fewer still of those will live. Thats because they wont get much help, if any at all, from their fellow scroll hunters.

Why is that? While all blues are competing among themselves for scolls, they must know that any red group will mean zero scolls for anyone outside that guild. If you have two soccer teams, one compoised with 11 great players and 11 pretty good players. You would expect the "great" team to win most of the time. But if the great players just focus on playing for themselves and not for the team, its a safe bet a much less accomplished team will beat them, again and again. And when it comes to pvp, guilds that pvp tends to be generally much better than just about anyone else.

And still the blue sheep wont cooperate. I think the art of working together, with the exception of dedicated pvp:ers, was lost after UO:R hit the shelves. Like Nieves pointed out, there are some obvious cheap tactics to fight back. Dont expect to see it all that much.

So, you want scrolls and you are tired of having a mindless horde of blue players lagging you? Then team up with your friends and do something about it. It will be interesting to see whether blues pick themselves up and decide to fight back - together. Or whether they will run to mommy OSI and ask for help. Am I the only one thinking cooperation/conflict is a natural aspect of a massively multiplayer online RPG?

Time will tell. Until then, log in your reds. Or tell us here what you think.

^ top-Nieves Gets Banned....
[Nieves] August 17 - 5:58 PM EDT
On a Neverwinter Nights world.

I find Eveningstar (12.251.1.195:5121) under the Persistant Worlds sublisting on the Neverwinter Nights Internet Gaming list. I get on, pretty cool world. Start in a town, move west, fight goblins. Having a good time, rocking and rolling. Dieing, respawning, losing XP and Gold, but not caring because the world seems tight.

I run into a female, two handed halberd wielding character. We chat, she offers a shield, I say thank you and move on. Nice enough right?

I am acting silly because getting killed by goblins is emberrassing.
I find out who the server admin is, we chat a bit and ask him about the world. Doesn't divulge much and I ask him why level 1 goblins are giving up magic items. He says they are a joke item and that "Brie" hasn't seen them yet. I am like: 'is that the sexy character I ran into". "She's married ya, yutz". Er, I was talking to the character, not the person. And I don't do cyber anyway. Blah blah blah, the female character asks what they are, I tell her I don't know because they are not indentified but I am going to the smith shop. I was going to give her a pair (I found 3 so far) because she was nice to me earlier.

The server admin says he wants me to tell him something. I reply with "uh oh, go ahead". He tells me that since I obviousely don't replay much, why did I say what I said to her. I am like, honestly? He replies with, "that's how I usually like it". I am like, well, you are talking to the right person then. I told him I could answer that many different ways, but I was just joking. Then he tells me I lied to him and calls me a liar. That I lied twice.

Er...not. Not to Nieves you fucking don't.

I tell him I don't appreciate being called a liar and that I don't have to take that from him. If he can't accept that as an answer, so be it. If that's how it's going to be then I don't need to be on this server. he said: "that's right, you don't" -Booted-

Motherfuck....so I try to log on: "You have been banned".

A'ight. Bitch.

If anyone logs on to Eveningstar, tell him Nieves of UOPG said: "eat a dick".

^ top-Protectors Of The Spawn
[Nieves] August 17 - 11:00 AM EDT
I would say Stratics scooped me on this news, but I knew about P0S (zero not 'oh) on Great Lakes almost a week ago and I had already read the write up The Black Company has on their site. (I hope the B*C site can handle the marked increase in hits this weekend).

The original definition of P0S was...well, let's just say it wasn't 'user friendly'. The current 'definition' is much better. Thank you for taking my advice to heart.

As far as what they are doing: well, it's effective. 20+ of these GL reds come down, and guess what? You will die. These are the cream of the crop in Great Lakes PvP and gankage. All they have to do is hang out on the fringes dropping stragglers with blue healers behind and then move in catching groups and killing them 4-5 at a time. Then when you get to the altar campers, surround and annhilate. Most of those players hunting the Champion areas are NOT organized nor work as a unit. They are there for their own greed. They hide, and wait, then jump on the spawn, get a scroll if they can, then leave. They could give a shit about the other 50+ people there. And in a place like Ogre Lord Island in Despise, the lambs await the slaughter.

Is there no hope? Well, yes. 4-5 Mages with EarthQuake and Chain Lightning scrolls can own a group of reds if the reds are in a close enough group. Cheesy as fucking hell, but effective. Oh, don't forget the Greater Explosion potions. Magic Resist will not help you against GE's thrown by 5 guys...

Remember, these reds don't care about fighting fair, they care about kicking you out of the dungeon, taking your powerscrolls and gold, and selling them on EBAY or Vendors to fill their own coffers and replace the reagents and potions they use to kill you. Note to all you reds: Yes, it's about loot, but I put to you, a single, decent power scroll will pay for a week's worth of PvPing. If not more.

And since the Kings of Great Lakes Gank are going to be out there, it's your chance to return the favors they have given to you. Granted, and I stress this, the means to the mass slaughter of REDs and Greys with two spells is lame and absolutely stupid, but, they would do it if they could. No reason not to use the tools given to you correct?

Maybe true Knights of Justice will step up to the plate (dammit I hate the fucking spamming of posing KoJ's), and deal with these types of situations.

A simple hint to GLA....take heed....or die as everyone else does.

And to everyone of you that thinks about complaining on the Ultima Online.com and UOStratics.com and like forums about getting ganked in Felucca Dungeons, grow a pair and fight the fuck back. The tools are there. "Play The Fucking Game"© or quit.

Edit: Changed the last paragraph so as to satisfy someone's curiousity into my Journalistic Entegrity.

^ top-Too much of a good thing. . .
[FrozenFire] August 17 - 4:06 AM EDT
Every corporation thrives on monthly reports. And I bet you that OSI is chalking up the BOD system as a huge success in reports to their parent company. -And why shouldnt they? A lot of people play this particular subgame and the BOD system as a whole has breathed life into the crafterclasses again. Well, at least blacksmithing and tailoring.

But. . .as much as I use the BOD system myself (4 smiths and 3 tailors) I dont agree that the situation for crafters is as good as youd believe after hearing OSI talk about it. Something very important is missing. The other players! As well designed as the BOD system is, its still essentially a trading card game implemented into UO. And, I suspect, the real reason it was conceived and programmed, was because the crafting class was slowly, but surely dying.

The real problem with crafting in UO can be summed up in one word: Abundance. Go here to read the rest.

^ top-Co-wned Strong Boxes and Serpent Pillars
[Nieves] August 16 - 3:58 PM EDT
Co-owners are advised to first empty their strongboxes before trying to claim a house owned by an inactive account. It is, and has been, the nature of strongboxes to not allow you to access them once you no longer are listed as a co-owner of the house. In fact, the strongbox will disappear if you are removed as a co-owner and then try to access it.

Also, the Serpent Pillars are turned off because there is something wrong with them. And, since it's too hard to fix them, they will probably stay turned off. Of course, maybe, in a few years, we can start using them again for $29.99 per use.

^ top-Playing the Part of Mr. Positive
[Hennarr] August 13 - 5:50 PM EDT
Every week or so, when I update with an essay or rant, I end up rather surprised at the results. When I publish my weekly spew about some UO topic that is irritating me at the moment, I expect the response to be rather negative. I tend to be crude, rude, and bash the game and OSI quite a bit. However, after two or three days, when I open my UOPG mailbox I am shocked by what is sitting there for me. After I delete all the obvious email virus crap, I find myself generally staring at quite a bit of feedback. The feedback is amazingly positive. I expect people to bash the length of my babble, bash me for attacking OSI, or bash me for my feelings on certain topics. Much to my disbelief, those emails are few and far between. Most people seem extremely supportive of the things I say in my rants. However, I did receive an email that made me pause and think for a moment. Go here to see what it said.

^ top-What Is Up With Shadowbane?
[Nieves] August 13 - 5:25 PM EDT
You know about it. You want to play it. But it's late. Very late. Almost two years late.

If you don't know, my Puerto Rican brother, Silk, his lovely wife, Misty (both of Blackdagger.com) and I went to a party held by the SB Dev Team in Austin during the weekend of the UOFaire. I met some Dev Reps and got to hang out with VosX and the other reps. Hell, they thought we were so cool, they took us to the front of the line (/end ego).

I talked to VosX and asked him some pointed questions about the game. The design seemed solid. Silk took some cool pictures of the Beta running on the big screen (ask him for images). Unfortunately, it was too loud in the room and the recording of my talk with VosX is lost in static and my memory of my conversation is lost in memories of OSI lies, mistruths, and other bullshit.

Watts pointed me to an article today I thought interesting. What the fuck is wrong with VosX? Is he losing it? Is the rumors of SB's Dev Team not being able to work out issues with features in the game finally getting to him? I don't know. And it concerns me. Even though I don't think SB will be the game for Nievesy Pooh (I am leaning towards NWN, SWG and/or WoW and will be giving Astonia and DAoC a real try soon), I feel, with the following they have, and (if they get it to work) SB will be a solid game. But...well, it's 10 weeks 'till their promised release. What's interesting is the game is being released in less than 3 months. And we have yet to see a public beta. Sure, plenty of private beta time, and even a European Beta, but not a full blown US Beta? I mean, c'mon, over 50% of the Computer Game Sales happen here in the US. It makes sense the US Market gets an open beta for this game.

Well, I play UO. So, lots of shit never makes sense to me. I guess I should be used to it.

Another interesting question is: Why aren't the sponsors (read: financiers) of this game screaming bloody murder about getting the game out? I mean, it happened with other games right?

For all of you SB Fanbois, I hope you get your game. I hope we don't get another Anarchy Online or World War 2 Online.

Hello all , got some news to report . I took the new patch when I logged into the game on Atlantic . Went to the dungeon , immediately crashed .

Big thanks to the person that rezzed me and killed the Daemon that looted me . NIce to meet up with classy people .

Ok I thought , I won't go hunting until they release the patches that fix all the bugs that this patch meant to fix bugs is creating .

Well went to the smith to get my bods . Asked the NPC smith for bod info and the client crashes . Reproduced this crash every time . I restarted game and asked the smith for bod info , immediately crashed the client 5 times in a row .

I'm trying to be a more positive person lately , so I wont mention the crappy job OSI staff has done yet again . I also won't mention the sheer greed of charging us 30 bucks for the name change ( deed ) , something that sounds it will take their gm's about a second to do , and something we have been asking for for years and years and years and gotten nothing but canned answers and flat out lies .
I won't talk about that because I have a pretty girl and a beautiful beachfront day here in New England and I don't need to pay OSI to piss me off . I'm going to go out and enjoy my day .
Have fun everyone

^ top-Bard Essay
[Nieves] August 8 - 12:37 PM EDT

Hey all been working my 7x gm bard T-hunter and here is all the new info I got . First off , My character's name is Treas.Hunter Jon ( kill my own damn mother for a name change deed ... ) I play him on Atlantic . His skills are gm Music / Provo / Eval / Magery / Meditation / Lockpicking / Cartography . It took about 18 months of sometimes casual / sometimes heavy playing to get him to this point .

I was very happy with this char because at GM provo ( which took the longest to gm after cart ) I had a 100 % chance of making two monsters - any monsters - fight to the death . Needless to say I was pissed off when OSI announced the changes to barding . I liquidated all of my in-game possessions down into gold and prepared to sell it all and the account on E-Bay . A few friends convinced me to stick around for a month after pub 16 , and I'm glad I did . OSI sobered up after our unanimous outcry and the nerf is a lot softer than expected . I'll discuss the new Slayer or " Virtue " instruments first , then the new bard item " firehorn " .

Enchanted instruments can be found on many monsters throughout the land . I have found them on Dragons , Ballrons , Shadow Wyms , Terathan Avengers and Warriors , Lizard Men and many others . A friend told me he even found one on a dingbat .

The Slayer Instruments seem to be spawning in the same fashion as the Slayer Weapons ie; I have found lots of Terathan slaying instrments on Ophidians and vice versa , and elemental instruments on Shadow Wyrms . I have yet to find a Dragon Slay on a creature . I have found tons of elemental weapons on Shadows and Dragons . However , I have also found a Blood Drinking lute on a Terathan Warrior ; a friend tells me he finds lots of good ones on Air Elementals , such as Daemon Dismiss and Blood Drinking . So there does seem to be a litte ryme and reason to it and also some randomness .

What the Slayer Instruments do is increase a bard's chance to successfully provoke the appropriate monster . For example , a lute of Summer Wind would improve your chances of provoking two air elementals , Flame Dousing would increase your odds against Fire Elementals , etc . Tired of those constant failures provoking giant scorpions ??? Grab a Scorpions Bane harp ! Yeah !

When you use an enchanted instrument against the appropriate monsters a small white pop of light appears on both monsters you are provoking - whether you succeed or not . So for instance if you provo 2 dragons with a Dragon Slaying lute , you will see a small pop of light on both dragons . This lets you know you are targeting the correct monster and getting the bonus . If you use the Drag Slay on a drag and a water ell , you will only see the light on the Dragon .

You actually get a penalty when you use the instrument against a monster that it wasn't intended for . So if you use them on mismatching monsters , the benefit and the penalty cancell each other out and you are left with non-gm instrument results . It's best to stick to gm made instruments in this case .

I picked up a dragon slaying tamborine on Tradespot and it works extremely well . I provo the dragons ( 101 provo 101.9 music ) very consistently , I would say 8 or 9 out of 10 times . Typical OSI fuck up - at this time dragon slaying instruments do NOT have any visible benefits against Shadow Wyrms or White Wyrms . Other random notes : Snake slayer instruments do NOT work against Ophidians of any kind or Ice Serpents , Spider's Death and Scorp Bain instruments do NOT work against Terathans and as noted before dragon slaying does NOT work agains Wyrms or Wyverns . I have also found " Super Slayer " instruments - ones that will work against an entire class of monsters , such as Elemental Ban .

The Firehorn is a new area effect weapon for bards . It takes 15 sulpherous ash per use . I have noticed that the Firehorns do not have durablilty charges , however they have a random chance (1 in 250 according to OSI ) of breaking every time you use them . My first one only lasted a day or so , and the one I'm using now has lasted me a week or so of heavy play . They spawn on just about all monsters except the super low tier stuff like dingbats . I have about a dozen firehorns now , and Ive started giving them away to friends and other bards I see working the champ spawn without one .

With my template the Firehorn does roughly as much damage as a GM eval EBolt only of course it's area effect within two tiles . The effect is stricly within two tiles . You can target a monster that is close to you , or you can target your own health bar . The firehorn will not damage you . I discovered a funny new method for destroying the low tier spawn in the Champ spawn in Destard . I walk into an uncrowded area and just stand there ( have RA activated ) . After a minute or so , I am completely surrounded by lizard men and snakes like 3 tiles deep . I let the firehorn rip and all the snakes die instantly and the lizardmen are down to bout 1/3 health . A player suggested that the firehorn is a waste on low-tier monsters , considering that an Energy Vortex will do the same job and use less regs - this is a good point and it all comes down to style and what you can afford . The Firehorn is real fun , they look awesome . Sure they smoke ash like nuts but what the hell - you want to be like every other mage in the joint ? Myself I don't mind using the ash up , it's very easy and cheap to buy bulk regs now .

Other random notes about the firehorn ; they will roast blues that are within two tiles of you , including pets . This will turn you grey and get you ganked . Firehorn blasts will also roast other peoples Blades Spirits and Energy Vortexs . I hear the Firehorn damage is calculated according to your bard skills ie ; 5/7ths of the damage is from your combined music and provo , another 1/7th for each discordance and peacemaking .

I find that an Eathquake / Firehorn combo does the most damage at gm music / provo / eval - more so than Chain Lightning / Firehorn or Meteor Swarm / Firehorn combos ( I use scrolls so I don't get the constant EQ failure ) . Also , I have found that a gm alchemist throwing a purple potion does as much damage ( roughly ) as a gm eval flamestrike .

It's too bad my bard is gm cart and picking or I would pick up this hellacious PVM template ;

gm Alchemy
gm Music
gm Provo
gm Discord
gm Magery
gm Eval
gm Meditation

What I'm working now does terrific damage in the champion spawns on low AND high level monster spawn . I get a pile of monsters fighting ( I won't waste the Ash on less than 3 ) then I jump in the melee and pop an EQ scroll , immediately bust the Firehorn . Then I step back and med , usually the med finishes about half-way when I catch my breath . I step up for another toot , step back , med .... rinse repeat as desired .

With gm alchemy and a keg of greater explosions ? I can only imagine what another Flamestrike powered area effect spell would do to the overall damage - plus you can throw those purples endlessly ! No delay , just set a macro for use item type purple potion and bombs away .

All in all I think OSI really tuned down the nerf they originally intended for us bards after the stink we made . My bard is fine , even doing level 5 hunts solo no problem , and now even doing odd shit I never thought I would be doing , like roasting 5 Terathan Matriarchs at a time while all the wall fairies wait for the Champ to come out ( damn wall fairies ) .

Well that's all the info I have discovered . File it ! Laters-

-Maxcaty

Thanks! BTW: You don't have to kill your mother for a name change deed. You just have to pay $29.99. You see, OSI figured out the way to do it. The Change_Char_Name Function requires the 29.99 to be deposited to work. I mean, after 4+ years, they realized "wow, we just had to put 29.99 in it and it will work! WOOWOO!"

It's not like the GMs couldn't do it (which they did for me) or put it in game as a one time use per character deed for, say, 1 million gold. Nah, that would be too fucking easy. I mean, we all know how hard it was. OSI has been saying so for years. "Sorry, too hard to change names".

was thinking when they decided to make pub 16, and no, it wasn’t to make your life hell, mess up templates that you spent years to create, or turn fel dungeons into a tram in a can. Those were all just side effects. I do feel, however that OSI had 2 different reasons for pub 16 one was made for their benefit and the other for ours.

The first reason was to make more cash. I mean face it a lot of players are done building their chars and are getting ready to move on from UO. Powerscrolls are making players rebuild their characters, and GGS makes them take more time to rebuild. What this all adds up
to is that you pay $10 a month for another few years collecting powerscrolls, gaining the skills, and modifying your templates.

The second reason actually did have some ideas in it that were for our benefit. What they wanted to do was define a more “pure” fighter and mage class. I mean most PvP characters are Hybrids, they have both mage and fighter characteristics. With Powerscrolls what you are now forced to do is either make a really powerful mage or really powerful fighter. Should you decide to make a hybrid you would have to make the hybrid character less powerful in skill then the
“pure” mage or fighter. Let me give you an example.

A “Pure” Mage would have something like this
120 Magery/Meditation/Eval Int/Resist/Wrestling and
100 Inscribe

A “Pure” Fighter would have something like
120 Tactics/Swords/Anat/Healing/Resist and 100
Lumberjack

Now say you wanted an Eval Dexer, a hybrid, they would
need something like

100 Mage/Eval/Fence/Tact/Resist/Heal/Anat

They hybrid would be weaker in skill but it would have some skills from both classes, it would be hard for the Dexer to hit both the Lj and the Mage, but he could use magery, if he wanted to up his fence and tactics, he would have to sacrifice a combined 40 points to Mage and Eval, or maybe healing and resist if he wanted. My point is that what OSI tried to do, besides line their own pockets, was make “Pure”
fighter and mage classes more powerful than the hybrids that dominate right now.

I may not be right but that’s my 2 cents.

animal lore:
the hot spot method still works. load up on bandages, tame one frenzied ostard and one black bear, and get on your boat. make sure you have vet and lore unlocked. have the pets attack each other and keep healing the bear. sail at slow speed to find a spot where you get an animal lore gain. stop the boat, lock vet and keep applying bandages. mark the spot, because you can come back to it the next day if you don't manage to GM the skill. if the spot runs out, you can either come back the next day, or unlock vet and keep looking for another gain spot. rinse, repeat. side note: your level of vet is unimportant, you should just be able to keep the bear alive. you CAN still use this method even if you have GM vet already.

time investment: about 2 hours if you are lucky, but it can take longer if your gain spots run out fast and you have to go looking for new ones all the time. the higher your lore, the harder they are to find.

animal taming:
tame creatures about 20 points below your current skill level for optimized gains. you can include anything that has a taming difficulty of at least 50.0 to get you to GM, but the sweet spot is around 20 points below skill. a little lower is better than a little higher, so for example at 88.0 taming white wolves will show better results than bulls.

the more you tame, the better chances you have for skill gain, so instead of wandering around taming animals and releasing them, find a spot that has a spawn suitable for your needs and tame-release-kill. that way you will have a constantly refreshing source of tamables and don't need to waste your time looking for them. your tailor will greatly benefit from this as well if you save the hides. :P

veterinary:
skill gain is not difficulty based, so you don't have to heal increasing amounts of damage to keep gaining at higher skill levels. take your frenzied ostard and black bear on your boat and 8x8. you can use the same animals all the way to 120 skill if you want. keep in mind you won't gain from fails, so if you get a gain run, stay in the same spot until you successfully apply a bandage, even if it might take a few attempts. mark your runs, since you will most likely get gains in the same places again the next day.

there ya go...! :)

When it talks about there being a money problem once you get to oilcloths...
I haven't seen this any more wrong. What I did from 74.6-99.6 with my tailor, was I cut them into bandaids, and came out about dead even. How this was done, is you go into UOA... and you go into the sell agent... and you add bandages to your auto-sell list. Once you do that, go any healer, and start selling, they buy the bandaids for 2gp each, which is exactly what the cloth costs. The downside is this only works in small quantities at a time, which is why the UOA agent is a must IMO. If you're not using UOA's sell agent, try to do it in quantities of 50 bandaids at a time. It is a pretty neat trick IMO. I just thought I would share my wisdom, I find it helps you to break even, especially into your mid-late 90s when you rarely fail them.

Thanks,

Thank you for the tip Liron.

FYI: At one point, I don't think Tailors bought bandages. And as far as I am concerned, I will keep my bandages for my warriors.

OK I've done a little log of my fishing gains post pub16. To all of you interested in how working skills is going to be different post pub16 please allow me to alleviate your concerns. Though I've never worked fishing before and cannot give you an exact comparison, from what I saw it appears to be no different than working skills outside of power hour. One thing should be noted before I list the gains, I stopped my macro to kill serpents and loot them. So if you were going for straight skill gain it would probably be faster.

Day 1:
Started at 73.0 where I left off pre-patch. Ran my macro for four hours and ended up at 82. This was probably the quickest part of my skill gain as I didn't pull up my first serpent until 81.

Day 2:
Started at 82 and ran my macro for 6 hours and was left at 88.1. So it was approximately one full point of gain per hour worked. Shortly thereafter a nasty storm came through and knocked out the power and cable. 2 hours later I start my macro up for another 2 hours to end the day at 91.1.

Day 3:
Started at 91.1 and pulled a 9 hour macro run after work and ended up with 96.3. I figured out something interesting that may be common knowledge to those who have fished before, but if you catch a serpent and stop on that exact spot you can 8x8 serpents. Just fish your 8 forward and if you don't pull up a serpent after fishing for a while go 16 back. When the serpent is caught just continue in the direction of the serpent "run".

Day 4:
Started at 96.3 and after 8 hours of macroing ended at 98.6.

Day 5:
Started at 98.6 went all the way to GM after 3 hours work.

Loot acquired:
28 regular nets, 1 teal colored net, 34 level 1 maps, 2 level 2 maps, 1 level 3 map, 872 serpent scales, and 1 MIB. Although Horned Hides do spawn on serpents I didn't collect them so as to keep my weight down and reduce the amount of times I had to recall to the bank. Maps were mostly level 1 as shown, but occasionally I would pull up a serpent with two maps on him, one would be a level one and the other was a level 2 or 3.
