8x8 By Gator and Nieves

How do you do an 8x8? Well the skill resource system uses a grid to determine how and when you gain skills via movement based skills. OK so lets say we want to raise some Eval Intelligence. Park your boat on the ocean. Something like:

Now to begin searching for your initial gain square move to your left or right. I do this by commanding the tillerman to "Slow Right":

Now as your moving start casting And once you gain...........

STOP!!!!!!!! Stay in the square you gain in. It doesn't matter if you started the cast 3 squares ago, where you gain is the square you want!! That is the square your gains start in. Now if you want you can mark that square as your initial gain. I usually don't, but for this demonstration I will. Now in theory, your next .1 gain will be found in the square exactly north of your initial gain square. So let's move one square north,

And cast again,

BAM, Nice work, got another gain. lets move onto the next square.

Ok cast again:

WOOT, Ok we are rolling, lets move on to the next. Remember sometimes these gain runs will last AWHILE. Its not unusual to see 3.0-5.0 point runs . So keep at it.

New Spot, and cast....

Uh-oh, looks like our little run is dead. Two things you can do here, I have found that sometimes, gains will skip a square. So if you cast 4-5 times in one square without a gain, move one more north, it might pick right back up again, or go ahead and "Slow Back" and keep casting...

Wow, see that, back in the "Second Gain" Square, you have gained again, now go ahead and move on like before:

And cast:

And from here on out just keep rinsing and repeating. Loose a gain run, go back to sailing east or west till you find a new run. And that folks is how you 8x8!! Good luck, and I hope this method works well for you, it has for ALOT of folks!

Later

That is a portion of Gator's old 8x8 Essay. Some notes: All 'resource squares' are exactly 8 tiles by 8 tiles each. Remember that not all skills are affected by movement.

These include all crafting skills and the 'lesser used skills'. You can find a list here.

The way I teach people to 8x8 is thus:

There are chopped up tools you can use that will do this process for you, but if you wish to 8x8 on your own (which is what I do) and not risk getting banned, continue reading. Get on a boat in the middle of an ocean. Make sure you have necessary equipment and supplies. Regardless of what facet you are on, lock your boat. You don't need someone coming on the boat and messing with or harrassing you.

I usually stand in front of the mast. I say "left" or "right" and use the skill. As SOON as I get a gain, I stop. I use the skill 3-5 more times or until I cannot get another gain (depending on my skill level and what skill it is). I say "forward one" 8 times and get in the next resource square. I then use the skill again. I use the advice Gator gave above to determine whether or not a resource gain 'thread' (what I call the line you are going forward in/using to gain skill). If you are not gaining anything, say "left" or "right" to try and find the next resource square. A tip: As soon as I say "left" or "right", I start using the skill, type in the word "stop" and have my finger sitting over the enter key. This ensures I find the gain thread. If I miss it. I watch how many times the boat moved and say "right one" or "left one" as many times as is needed.

Hasta.
